Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, Ryan! For added protection and durability, we do recommend applying a polyurethane over Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain. Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane is a great option for interior surfaces. Please keep in mind, this is not a waterproofing finish and at this time, we do not offer a waterproof finish for interior wood surfaces.

Q:putting varathene redwood on a front pine porch covered peel

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out, Mary. When using Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain on exterior surfaces, it must be topcoated with a suitable spar or exterior-grade polyurethane. This stain must also be applied to bare wood. We also do not recommend this product for use on decks or on porches, as we do not offer a suitable topcoat for this type of use and foot-traffic.

Q:Can you use a water based varathane polyurethane over your oil based blue stain for stairs
by|Feb 8, 2024

Answer This Question
A: Let's see if we can clear things up. While a Water-Based protective top coat can be applied to Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Premium Wood Stain, we do not recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane. The foot traffic will cause the finish to crack and peel. Instead, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish as it is specifically formulated for high traffic surfaces.
