Q:May I use this as a porcelain tile transition to replace costly 6" granite shower curb/curbless in the shower stall? The shower door can then seal water out on the bottom with its attached rubber sweeper seal with the new PVC curbless transition.

A: this is PVC and waterproof. I don't see why it cannot be used as you describe. You may want to contact the vendor directly and ask if they are issues with wear.

A: YES! I installed mine with a nail gun and filled in the holes with putty, sanded and painted. I also ripped them into wall trim, too. I painted them white, but it will take paint.

A: I have heard the same conflicting viewpoints, especially from manufacturer's sales reps. Keeping in mind that their goal is to sale product, if they can accomplish this by convincing you that you can remove surface prep steps, they may do it.
I have used cellular PVC trim, boards and sheets extensively in my construction projects over the past 20 years. Any time clients had requested a color change, I always primed prior to painting using Zinser BIN or Zinser 123. These primers bond to smooth surfaces... even glass.
I always fall back on the advice of a professional painting subcontractor who explained that paint is engineered to bond to primer, primer is engineered to bond to surfaces.
My advice: Prime first... and stay clear of those all-in-one primer/paint concoctions.

A: Since it is PVC (plastic), you should be able to paint it with latex based paint without priming the surface. That being said, I found mine to have a semi-gloss surface so if I was going to paint it, I might prime it with a good solvent (oil) based primer. That will give the latex based paint a good surface to adhere to.

A: Dear Doug: Cellular PVC is cellular PVC; painting doesn't depend on a brand. Cellular PVC also holds paint much better than wood because it does not absorb water, so any approach will work. For maximum adhesion, however, it is best to lightly scuff sand the surface, apply a latex primer then latex paint.
I hope this is helpful,

A: JL - You would have to check this out on the FDA website to be sure. Cellular PVC, in my experience, will eventually attract and hold mold and mildew spores... particularly on any cut edges and the board ends. Even though this would be able to be disinfected, you might still have a discoloration that wouldn't come out.

A: I can't say for sure, but it's likely food safe. It would be the same as anything else made of PVC, such as bowels, plates or cutting boards. However, it could not be used to cut on as it has a cellular core.

A: I do not think so. Not thick enough and made of plastic so i doubt it is rigid enough.
by|May 29, 2020
A: Probably not. This material does not have enough strength to even support itself over much of any span. It’s is made for trim applications only.
by|May 29, 2020
A: It might saggy little bit in the heat if not supported at short enough intervals. PVC softens up in the heat. 12 inch or possibly even 16 inch supports under it might work but I wouldn’t go 24 inches.
