Q:Will the trim puller remove crown molding without damaging drywall or the trim?

Answer This Question

A:  I never had any damage when using this tool to remove crown molding, trim, or baseboards. I've used it a LOT.

A:  Yes, I purchased the Trim Puller a number of years ago and it worked great at pulling off baseboard molding without damaging the drywall. I imagine that it would work similarly on crown molding. Good luck!

A:  Damage to the trim or drywall will depend greatly upon the type if original installation and care of the user. For example, if the trim was attached with an adhesive the drywall will surely be damaged and damage to the trim is also likely. Drywall, being a relatively soft material, is likely to be dented or have impressions left where the tool is used to pry against the trim. If the trim was attached with nails driven at opposing angles the trim is likely to be damaged. In short, some trim may be salvageable, but most likely not all and some repairs will likely be necessary to drywall. The extent of those repairs will be relative to the force required to dislodge the trim and where that force was applied. If the force was applied between studs holes in drywall are likely on well attached trim unless some form of backer is placed between the tool and the wall. I've never used the tool to remove crown mold so I cannot respond other than to say that the same things mentioned above apply to any trim or drywall.

A:  My suggestion is to cut the caulk with a multi-tool or other method first. Depending how it's affixed to the wall, there is a possibility of minor damage to the drywall. The molding should come away undamaged if it's done properly and assuming it's simply nailed in place.

A:  Yes, as long as you trim any caulk first and take your time with this tool, making your way across the length of the moulding.

A:  This trim puller is going to be your best bet in trying IMHO. I’ve pulled multi layer chair rail and wide crown. The older the wood the riskier. This tool allows the pulling force to be relatively even across the face of puller rather than a pry bar that creates a lot of pressure at small areas.

A:  If you are careful and the trim isn’t glued to the drywall in some way, it should be fine.

            by|Apr 28, 2020

A:  You will need to be careful while using it, but even then you might have to touch up some of the drywall or trim. One great tip for the trim is if you dent the back & side of the wood trim (if it's pine) it can be fixed by putting a wet cloth on the dented part and add heat from a large soldering iron or regular clothes iron, keep moving the iron and check under the cloth to to see if the wood magically raises up. As far as the drywall, you can also put a large 6" taping knife or piece of metal behind this tool and pry against that (it might mess up the knife BTW). I found a few really hard to pull nails over the years and once I was able to get the trim free about 1/4" I used a small Milwaukee m12 hackzall with a metal blade and cut the nail. A:  Yes.

              by|Nov 13, 2020

A:  yes and you will love it if you use an ounce of prevention to prevent a pound of cure. Use a piece of Masonite or other like thin board between the wall and the trimmer. Don't use excessive force....be careful. Trimmer will not damage molding. This trimmer in the tool world is a blessing and saves on stress.

Q:Can you extend the handle with a paint extension rod ?

                  Answer This Question

A:  No, there is no threaded hole in the end of the handle to attach the rod. If you are looking for more leverage, there is no need. The blade has a built in cam that adds separation of the molding as you pound it down between the wall and the molding.

A:  NOt this one. Zenith Ind. makes a floor scaper version of this that has a threaded end. HD sells it, but may not be in stock at all stores. I'm not sure these would hold up with a gorilla on the end of an extension.

A:  It doesn't have any threading. It's just a rubberized handle over metal.

                        by|May 12, 2020

A:  No, and no need to. It has plenty of leverage to pull a typical trim nail. As designed, it pulls baseboard without damaging/denting the wall. If you're trying to pull nails that require the additional leverage of a longer handle, you'd almost certainly end up punching a hole in your wall rather than pull the nail. (did someone use ring-shank nails to install your baseboard?)

A:  No. the end has a rubber coating on it. Also, if you tried to to do it, you may get too much leverage and break it.

A:  No and Yes, it’s not designed for this. But if you have some duct tape and some zip ties you can, not sure how it would hold up.

A:  No, there is no place to add an extension. The handle is just a heavy steel covered with a plastic cover.

A:  You'll probably have to ask Zenith Industries Customer Service (customerservice@zenithindustries.net) to answer your question. - That said. I purchased mine from Home Depot back on Dec 4, 2017; and, I wouldn't be concerned about the SKU difference. It's a pretty basic, sturdy tool. They might have made a change to the printing on the tool. I doubt it signifies a significant material change that would be of any concern with regard to its functionality. Just buy it. You'll like it.

If that is one of your main concerns do not use this tool. This is for sane people who use tools not made of radioactive materials. If the company wants to sell their tools in California they need to put warnings for the not so sane on common hand tools.

A:  I really don't understand the question. The puller's use is almost self explanatory. Put the sharp edge of the puller at the edge of the trim, drive it in with a hammer and pry sideways. If you are removing base you may damage the drywall if you are not on the stud when you pry so I suggest locating the studs before deciding where to drive the tool in. If the base was glued on you are likely to have damage to the walls anyway but if you drive it in between the wall and base at every point along the length it will tend to cut the glue and minimize damage.

A:  1) Place trim puller sharp edge between trim and wall (try to nudge it between the two). 2) Tap the back of the trim puller lightly with a hammer, be sure you are not hitting a nail, if you are, move the trim puller. Watch how the trim reacts, if its old and brittle, don't bend and seperate it too much from the wall, move onto another section of the trim. 3) After you work one section away from the wall, move down a foot or so and repeat steps 1 and 2. 4) Once trim is loose, just pull it off.

Vinyl siding is very flexible it would just bend where the finger is. As vinyl siding is held on by galvanized nails I would think a good quality cat's paw would make short work of removing those nails.

So I would imagine the siding would bend without lifting the nails. If you were to pry directly under the nail head it would most likely slip while prying and rip out the vinyl nailing slot. Remember also that the nails used for vinyl siding are usually roofing nails and are harder to pull out than finishing nails. This is not the right tool for the job you are attempting. If you are going to reuse the siding, I would expect a lot of damage to the siding. If this is a permanent removal, it will help but be tedious and still require a hammer or nail puller to remove the nails. An eight to ten inch flat nail puller would probably work better. I have never removed. more than one section of vinyl and then while installing. So I have only a small experience with the job at hand for you. I would look elsewhere for help with this job.

If it is not there, please have an associate look in the overstock area. If those two don't work, the store may be out and would have to re-order. The next closest store would be: 920 Middle Road, Bettendorf, IA 52722, but not sure if this is too far from your location. Thanks!

A:  Kmills, thank you for your input. It would be possible to damage the wall I guess, if user did not start inserting trim puller from one very end of the baseboard but rather somewhere in the middle, and if applied handle movement up and down for further separation, as typical for using pry bar. Also possible, if baseboard is attached with screws, which is hard to imagine why would someone had done that. Other than that, I do not see any excuse for this tool to damage the wall, if user follows a very clear instructions. On the other hand, a large size flat blade of the tool is facing the wall and secures it from cracking, same time wedged tab works like a spring while inserting and moving away baseboard from a wall. It is very effective and easy to use tool if used properly, like any other tool. I am assuming, that some people may need to take some time to adjust to a new tool and to different new movements, but trim puller does what is meant to do, and does it well. Going back to Rob's comment. Without any legit details is just impossible to figure out what went wrong with his project. Thank you for your time.

As you strike the tool you push back against your wall or cabinet as the tool goes down. The tool does a great job against cabinets and sheet rock. I can remove qtr round and cove trim off cabinets with little damage. In the past to remove base board a taping knife any pry bar where needed. I can use this one tool to do this job faster with way better results. Hope this helps.

It is just too bad, that some individuals would write intentionally nasty comment trying to mislead people looking for handy, easy to use and effective tool such as trim puller.

If you are super busy and don't have the 7 seconds to look at the clear instructions on the front of the Puller, I can see a blind person perhaps pulling it the wrong way.

Next you buy in store a gift card for the same amount or a bit more if you like, then use the gift card to pay for the order. The website does not take cash or checks, only credit and debit cards. If you have debit card you can buy it online and it ships to your store free. fyi I am a home depot 18 year p/t associate
