Awful Smelly Moldy
I will never purchase this product again, I can’t even call it mulch. Bought ten bags and they are all a solid moldy clump that smells like manure. Bought it last year and color faded quickly as well as white moldy chips in it. Taking it all back today for a refund.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Earthgro By Scotts Black Mulch and appreciate your feedback.

Odor is caused by decomposing natural material and is non toxic. We believe this is simply due to the wood beginning to breakdown or rot inside the enclosed bag. Once the mulch has been spread the odor should subside. Fungal mold spores including mushroom producing fungus are a natural part of soils and mulch. It just takes the right conditions for the spores to develop into a fungus or mold. We do not sterilize our growing media as microorganisms are an important component of growing media. The fungus mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil or mulch is too wet. Keep in mind that mold and fungus on growing media or mulch will go away with sunlight and air circulation.

    Good mulch
The mulch is very good, helping to keep the weeds down and holding in the moisture

    Terrible
I have bought over 240 bags of this mulch. In one week, it fades and looks terrible. I’m done buying this product and will switch to rocks. Never again.

For best results, mulch should be applied when rain is not expected for 24-48 hours and should not be watered for at least 24 hours to allow the mulch to fully dry which helps set the colorant. It is recommended to turn the top inch of mulch every 3-4 months for optimum color. Wood material can vary slightly batch to batch and how the wood absorbs the colorant can vary as well. For best color matching results, mix the bags together to even out any color or texture differences before applying. Any color difference will usually dissipate with exposure to sun and rain.

        Lost color within 4 days
We applied the mulch around the bases of a few trees and in flower bed beside our stairs. Looked fantastic to start, but 4 days later we got light rain and a lot of the color washed out. It is now various shades of brown. Spend the extra few bucks on the good stuff. Don't waste money on this.

One factor that can cause the color to fade prematurely is rain, especially around the time the mulch is spread. For best results, the mulch should be applied when rain is not expected for 24-48 hours and you should not water the area for 24 hours after applying to allow the mulch to fully dry, which helps to set the colorant.

Turned brown in less than 2 hours
C’mon Scott’s. I put out 8 bags of black mulch and the crap turned brown in less than two hours. I want a refund because it didn’t even last 1/8 of the day.

            Color mismatch
This was our first and last time purchasing this product. I was really disappointed with a name like Scott’s that it had such poor quality. We purchased 100 bags and 30 of those bags were a different shade of brown. Not only did the color vary from bag to bag, put there were also rocks in some of the bags! See picture of color mismatch and huge rock found in one of the bags. Some of the mulch was brown like the color crayon, while other bags were more of a brown/black?

Inconsistent type and quality. See pictures.
We ordered one batch (the bag on the left in the picture) of Scotts Earthgro Black Mulch to cover a portion of our 600 SF of garden in front of our house. Then we ordered a second batch, 20 bags this time to finish the job, and it was A TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND INFERIOR PRODUCT. See the bag on the right in the picture. We're what you'd call "elderly." We have no sensible way to fix this without redoing the whole thing, and we just don't have the energy to do that.

                Color washes out
I spread the mulch over the weekend and after a day of rain, most of color was washed out. I have a bag of mulch sitting next to the mulch that was spread out. See for yourself.

                  Looks terrible!
I am incredibly disappointed with this product. I put some down last week and it has already faded and it looks like it’s three years old. Scott’s, you should be ashamed of yourselves. This is such poor quality product. I thought maybe it was just me, but I can’t believe how many similar bad reviews are on this site within the last couple weeks.

Lost color in less than 2 days
I am so disappointed with this product. It states on the bag year-long color is guaranteed. We put the mulch down and didn't have any rain for a couple of days then it rained, and we lost all color from the mulch. We are very disappointed. We would not recommend buying this product and no idea how to get our money back.

This is the second year I've purchased Scotts black mulch and the second year it has lost it's color after one rainstorm. This will be the last time purchasing their mulch, it is total garbage!

Mosquitos in the mulch I received.
I have received my 10 bags on 4/5/23. Ever since then, I have the great battle to fight with the mosquitos, from mosquito bits, to boil water, to clorox bleach, to vinegar, to mint, to Yellow Sticky Traps. There are so many still alive. It costed much more money and time than I could affort! So much regret to buy this mulch!!

I just switched from red to black mulch. I am very disappointed in the quality of the Scott's black mulch that i purchased. I bought it last week and layed it the same day. As the pictures will show it has already faded and turned color. The bag states it will keep its color all year long guaranteed. I imagine that only means if it doesn't rain.

Fungal mold spores including mushroom producing fungus are a natural part of soils It just takes the right conditions for the spores to develop into a fungus or mold. Our growing media products are not sterilized and may contain microorganism including fungus. In fact, fungus mold has been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants by releasing nutrients from the organic material that growing media are typically lacking. The fungus mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil mulch is too wet. The mold and fungus that grows on soils and mulch will not harm plants and is safe for people and pets to be around although as always, we recommend you use gloves when handling for soil that has not been used yet allow it to dry out on some newspaper outside before using. For soil that has already been used, allow the plants to dry out a bit between waterings. It will not hurt the plant to allow the soil to dry between waterings but will typically eliminate any mold fungus growth which needs the extra moisture. Keep in mind that mold and fungus on growing media or mulch will go away with sunlight and air circulation.

Black mulch washed away after 1 day of rain
I bought 30 bags of black mulch on Saturday. On Sunday it rained all day. Went to look at my front yard on Monday and was surprised to see Scott’s mulch color had washed away. Some parts of yard kept there color but other parts I have plain wood chips now. 1 year color guarantee???? Didn’t last 2 days.

Watered and black mulch turned to brown. Can’t tell it was ever black. In photo you can see the difference between middle and edges.

For best results, this mulch should be applied when rain is not expected for 24-48 hours and the area should not be watered for 24 hours after application to allow the mulch the fully dry which helps to set the colorant. Hit or Miss
I bought 85 bags. I’ve opened 60 so far. I’d consider about 15 to be as advertised (premium mulch). 20 were basically larger wood chips so there’s far less coverage and nothing to hold them during rain. 25 bag were pitiful. Scott’s claims the contents are forest products. I got chunks of metal, wood with nails and obvious construction fragments plus rocks

It is possible that the screens were damaged and not noticed allowing some debris into the bagged product.

The worst mulch that I have ever purchased. Bought Red and bag indicates Red, but we have Brown and Red. Looks terrible.

Mulches are produced regionally at different plants and sometimes there may be 2 plants distributing to the same market. Wood material can vary slightly batch to batch and more so between plants. Because the wood material varies, how that wood absorbs the colorant will vary as well.

                                        Great mulch
Color is great and pieces are manageable. Used it for a walking path through my garden and it works great!

                                            Better than most!
I've used Scott mulch for years and have never been unhappy with it. It is a lot cleaner than other brands and does hold it's color, albeit faded, for a year. Since I buy between 50 and 100 bags of it a year, it's good product and I use all three colors plus some cypress for gold. It used to be 2 cu feet per bag, but that's marketing these days.

Beautiful dark black, shredded, heavy mulch, easy to spread, nice weight to stay in place
