I can't say the weather has given me much of a break to use the Gerber 13.1" Broadcut Machete but I did go out to play with it. All handy people love to pay with their new toys Much thought was put into the handle design for this type bellied blade. The blade comes plenty sharp for immediate use.(use safety wrist strap) The instinct and probably the best return for your labor is go ahead and use that belly of the machete to work for you and let the natural weight help it slide through the area. I'd say this time of year is a good time to attack blackberries.I posted a few pictures of a Holly tree to show limbs and seedlings. Gerber has been nice enough to give this a lifetime guarantee with the usual limitations. Comes with sheath and belt clip.

I really love this GERBER BROADCUT 13.1 IN. MACHETE! As received, it was almost sharp enough to shave you, and I think that with a little work, you could get it there! I used it to clear brush around the house, and after that, was able to trim a Camelia bush that I would ordinarily use my electric hedge trimmers on! One problem I did encounter was the sheath. More than once it got caught on the inside, and had to be wiggled around to get it out! Overall, this is a great tool, and I highly recommend that you add it to your collection!

Gerber Broadcut 13.1 in. Machete - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review Who can’t use a good knife? ...
Gerber Broadcut 13.1 in. Machete - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review Who can’t use a good knife? In the case of this Gerber Broadcut 13.1 in. Machete, it’s a BIG good knife. I have various power brush cutting tools like bladed and string cutters. There are time when having a good, handheld blade is essential for cutting thick vines and smaller brush. This machete is a great choice. The machete weighs a little over 18 ounces so it and the exposed part of the machete blade is just over 13 inches long with a nice curved/angled blade, sort of like a kukri except with the cutting edge on the outside of the curved blade rather than the inside. The angle is nice for getting a good cut on brush. The blade is a brushed stainless steel and has a hook notch at the end for cutting on a pull stroke. I see nothing in the documentation that specifies the type of steel used but I doubt it’s any specialty steel so, while it may not hold an edge quite as well, it will be far easier to sharpen and touch up. The tang of the blade runs the full length of the handle so you don’t have to worry about the blade separating from the handle at an inopportune time. The handle, screwed onto the tang, is a textured polymer that feels good in the hand and resists slipping. There’s a lanyard at the end of the handle for helping keep a grip on the handle and stopping your hand from accidentally sliding forward onto the blade. The Gerber machete also includes a sheath with a velcro belt loop attachment. The blade came very sharp and that’s good. I tried in on some weeds and thick stemmed plants and it worked fine, but I could have done the same with my pocket knife. The first real test came while cutting some larger branches for the brush pile. The handsaw was working fine for most of it but one branch in particular was pinching the blade and I couldn’t get through it. I wasn’t in the mood for getting the chainsaw out so I took the Gerber machete to it. The branch was seasoned hickory so the blade didn’t cut through it “like butter” but it took large chunks out on each strike and the branch was cut through very quickly. Perhaps not the best tool for the job but it was with me at the time and it worked. The Gerber Broadcut 13.1 in. Machete is a very nice blade. The size and weight are good for effectiveness without being too tiring for longer term use. The stainless steel blade came sharp and was able to cut through my seasoned hickory branch easily and quickly. The hook cutter on the end is great for pull strokes and overhead use. The full tang helps distribute the blows on your hand and makes sure the blade doesn’t break away from the handle. The handle is a nice textured polymer that feels good and maintains a good grip. This is a blade that should be in your arsenal of lawn and garden tools. I needed something that I can use to clean the underbrush and small branches at the back of the property, it’s light weight and very sharp. The blade is made of a corrosion resistant stainless steel. The hook or notch is good for reaching up to grab a branch or limb to pull it down then cut it off. As soon as the snow melts I plan on getting out there. I also plan on taking this the next time we go camping to cut up dead branches and small limbs for fire wood. The grip is very comfortable in my hand. I always use the lanyard as a safety precaution and always carry it in the supplied sheath, that’s a must. As some point I’m sure I’ll need to sharpen this, I wish they would include with it and on the web-site THERE recommendation on the proper angle, way or method of sharping it. I’m sure I can find numerous ways on the internet. I recommend.

The GERBER BROADCUT 13.1 IN. MACHETE is very sharp right from the package. I got another Gerber machete and it was also very sharp. Most machetes are pretty dull and need sharpening before use, but not Gerbers. They are made from stainless steel, but they sharpen up more like carbon steel. I ran this one across my leather strop a few times and it was razor sharp in about 2 minutes. I sliced a piece of copy paper to test it. I like the handle and the parang style shape of it. Great for heavy chopping.

Gerber Broadcut 13.1 in. Machete. Boy is this machete fun to use! The handle grip is perfect. I can use this machete three times longer than the old basic machete with a wood handle! The edge on this did not dull after taking out a grove of bamboo. This Gerber can clean cut vines, branches and bamboo with one swipe! It is wouderful because it is a Gerber!! I have nine Gerber knives and this machete stands up to the name of Gerber!!

Good backpack machete
Not really a yard work tool. Too short for a full day of working and chopping at overgrowth… unless you’re very short in stature. But for camping and hiking it’s actually ideal. Lightweight, reasonable sharp, and the blade resists corrosion very well with a little bit of maintenance.

I used this product once to cut down some weeds and the blade already has a big knick in the blade.

Great weight and has a very good balance - I was able to cut down 2 inch saplings with this even.

Got through the briars I wanted it to with low fuss, any issues were because the weilder was inept, not the blade. It did get more knicks in the blade than I expected or liked.

I haven't used it a lot so far but it works well when I have used it. I like the handle on it and strap to help keep it in my hand and the way the blade has a through tang into the handle. The curve of the blade seems to help with the force to cut through branches along with the sharpened hook on the blade top. I did sharpen the blade some before using it.
