I bought 4 sets thinking as it is advertised as Hardwood? But it is SOFTWOOD With a Janka rating of 420 which is slightly above pines rating of 410. Put one set up then found out it is not Hardwood as advertised. Oak had a janka rating of 1540 for hardness. Shame on HOMEDEPOT for allowing this false advertising to continue.

If you are going to paint this surrounding a door or entry way, by all means purchase it. However, if you attempt to stain this piece, your best bet is to take your business elsewhere as in a different company altogether. We bought the product and kept it in its plastic covering in the garage for a few weeks, resting upon sawhorses. After putting the third coat of polyurethane to a walnut stained ( two coats of the walnut stain / sanding etc. ), I took apart the plastic coating of this trim set and proceeded to clean it with mineral spirits. I let it dry overnight and applied the first coat of a walnut stain to the entire set. I set a garage light over it for the night as it sat in the garage to dry. The next afternoon, I proceeded to apply the second coat of stain. The material began to bleed the first coat as it dried creating lumps/puddles on the wood surface. After using a combination of 0000 steel wool/ paste wax/old linens and cotton rags to dry and clean the wood surface, the surface remained blotchy and disfigured. It is just cheap and if you do not want the " wood look or feel " , then by all means paint it and hang it. If you want a quality wood appeal / look towards your door/entry way, The wife and I are heading to Lowe's to find some quality wood. That just proves a point; there are certain things we buy at Home Depot and certain things we buy at Lowe's, thank goodness they are just a mile apart in our home town.

This trim package contains everything you need to trim out a normal size door with nice fluted trim. The wood is a clear hardwood with no major flaws of any type and no knots. The wood is already smooth enough out of the package to stain or paint without sanding saving a lot of time. Installation was a breeze. If you are looking for something with a little more character then just the standard casing this would be a good alternative.

I love this trim around our front door. It was ready to go. My hubby had an easy time putting it around our door. Very pleased. It has transformed how our front door looks.
