Would buy again!
This worked out great for some large patches in the back and some very thin areas in the front. We raked, aerated and aggregated the topsoil before applying. Watered several times a day and kept it wet, you'll know when to water as it dries out and changes color. 20 days later and the new grass is thick and beautiful!

This stuff is great...if you don't like grass.
I purchased this to grow new seed along the edge of a patio that I built. The first time I applied the mix, and then mixed in dirt and then covered with a straw net meant for covering new seed; I set an automatic timer to water it every morning and nothing grew. I tried a second application without the straw net with the same result. I ended up covering it with sod.

      It really worked
I recently had some work done to my yard and the contractors really messed up my grass. Bought this stuff, directions as follows turned the grass over with a rack, watered the area placed the grass seed then watered every day. See before and after 2 weeks. I did have to go back and do some patch work in some spots

        Use when over seeding
I applied a light coat of this product after over seeding my back lawn. It is important to keep this product moist for 21-30 or until new grass emerges

        Waste of money
I followed the directions to a tee. Watered twice a day or more and not a blade of grass grew. A total waste of time! Very disappointed… Wish I could get a refund. It has been over a month now since I used this on my bare patches.

Hello! We do apologize you've had difficulties with germination. Depending on your region, planting a cool season grass like Tall Fescue in the summer is typically not recommended due to the high temperatures. Easy to use
Grass seed in a smart package. There is a bit of material other than grass seed in this bag. The mix is designed to fix patches in the yard from whatever may have caused them. I'm using it to fill in a few spots where we had winter material stacked outside - and a few locations where the dogs have killed the grass. The pellet material in this mix seems to hold moisture much longer than the surface of a lawn. As long as the land you are patching is level, it should be fine. Keep it watered for a few days and green sprouts will appear - then the makings of grass and eventually a nicer lawn.

          Great product
This product is awesome. Just toss it out on bare spots and water regularly and within 5-7 days it’s growing. The seed is encased in a mulch product. It doesn’t wash away from rain or normal watering. It kind of swells up when it gets wet and stays in place. Easy to use and great results. This product works and is easy to use and that’s a great combination.

          It Works
I took three pictures of my grass. It is still growing where I seeded but it is very hard to see where I seeded. You do not need starter fertilizer since this contains fertilizer. The mulch hides the seeds so birds don't see it. Remember to keep the area moist and lightly water the area. If it is very sunny water the area twice. Seed after cutting your lawn and wait mowing until the seeds are grow approx 3 inches.

          Easy to apply
This Pennington 10 lbs. Smart Patch Tall Fescue Grass Seed with Mulchand Fertilizer was easy to apply. Waited for the next rainy period before laying it down. Used a red cup and covered all my bald spots. Expecting it to start growing any day now. I have used Pennington products in the past and really saw positive results. Don't expect anything different from this application. Definitely recommend this and all other Pennington products!

          Had hoped for better results
I tried this product on a few areas in my yard with mixed results. The first thing I noticed when using this product is the grass seed seemed to be at the bottom of the bag and not mixed throughout the other contents. I held the open bag closed and shook the bag trying to mix a consistent blend of grass seed, fertilizer, and mulch. I ended up having to mix the contents with a rake after I emptied the bag in my yard. After waiting 10 days, and mowing my yard, you can see some grass coming up in a small patch pictured below. I used the remainder of the bag on a larger area between my house and a tree that has been a problem area the last few years. Not much has started to grow yet in the larger area. I did look at the map on the back of the product bag, and I am located in Northeast Illinois, outside of the “Where will this seed grow best” map. It has been much colder than normal and it seems like it is raining almost every day which might be affecting the performance of this product. I am hoping once the temperature rises and I get less rain that I will see more grass growing. If not, I will have to go back to using a drop spreader for the grass seed, and a separate starter fertilizer to fill in the patch areas in my yard.

          Pennington Smart Patch Tall Fescue
I recently purchased Pennington Smart Patch Tall Fescue which is a combination of mulch, seed and fertilizer for bare spots in the yard. My yard developed thatch and bare spot over winter and wanted to get the right product for my fescue grass. After thatching the area and removing the dead grass, I applied the product and watering. After 5 days, I started to see growth around the bare area. Just a reminder that Smart Patch can be used either in spring or fall and be sure to check Pennington's website or back of the bag to see where this specific product will work well in the local area where you live and timing of laying the seed due to weather conditions. This product is definitely making a positive enhancement to our front yard.

          Good Idea
I got this Pennington 10 lbs. Smart Patch Tall Fescue Grass Seed with Mulch and Fertilizer to repair some bare spots from my holiday decorations and also fill in some thin areas. The idea with mulch fertilizer and seed in one package is good but so far i have not been impressed. Bag claims growth in about 5 days and it’s been 7 days now and not a single seed has grown. Bag does state full growth in 14 days so I’m holding out hope because it does seem like a good product. I’ve followed all directions. Water 2-3 times a day to keep it moist when the color changes telling me it’s time to water. A lot of the seeds on top seem to move around a lot when watering but the mulch stays put. The coverage was fantastic. Surprised by how many bare spots I was able to fill in which is why I’m rooting for this product to work. I would recommend for anyone to try and see what works best for them. This might start growing any day and just take off. Time will tell.

Great solution for patch small bare spots in the yard
I had several bare spots in my yard due to foot and equipment traffic as a result of removing some trees late last fall. I tried seeding earlier this year, but the seed washed out in areas that are drainage paths, so I thought I would give the "Smart Patch" a try. Fortunately, the product did not wash away. Although the weather was not optimum for sowing seed, I did begin to see small sprouts in about 8 days. Be sure to read the instructions about the coverage area which is considerably lower if you are patching spots that are completely bare.

Now finally SMART Grass Growing Products
Pennington is simply a name you can trust if you have been shopping landscaping material at Home Depot or other big box stores that offer similar products. I have been using their product almost as soon as they became available for simply the price advantage over other products, but then realized that it is a better and cheaper alternative to better lawn care versus others This product has not yet germinated in my property yet because it required 7-12 days to do so, but I’m confident that it will perform well in my property where I get sunlight just a few hours a day because of all the trees on my property. The advantage and simplicity that this product offers over others that do not combine your seeds, mulch and fertilizer is one that homeowner should gravitate to. The combination of ingredients saves us quite a bit of time as we balance our time with our responsibilities. This 10lb bag will easily cover 200 sq ft of your property if you follow directions. As I look of the features on the bag, this product has everything you need to fix bare spots – on hills mind you – and grow thick lush grass while employing water-conserving techniques to grow your lawn.

It did sprout in eight days
While the package says as soon a “five days” don’t take that too literally as very few grass cultivars will sprout that quickly. This took eight days, and those sprouts are barely visible, that is normal. For these photos I got down on my elbows and knees with the camera. I did water the seeds every day, and twice a day a couple of times when it was dry. The true test will come in the fall to see if they survive the summer heat but there isn’t time for that before the review is due.

          Good spot repair for lawns
I bought this Pennington Smart Patch tall fescue grass seeds about two weeks ago. I have many bare spots on my backyard fescue lawn and I’m hoping this will give me a good result. The mixture includes the seeds mulch and fertilizer which should be great for a fast maturity. I gave the product a four star because I just spread the seeds and it takes five days at least to germinate according to the package.

          Spotty but quick growth
Pennington 10 lbs. Smart Patch Tall Fescue Grass Seed with Mulch, Fertilizer. I prepared an area approximately 200 square feet as recommended on the package. I loosened the soil and added a bag of topsoil for good measure. I spread the seed, fertilizer and mulch mixture over the area by hand and then lightly raked the mixture into the topsoil. I covered the area with a light sprinkling of straw to protect the seed and hold moisture. Then I watered two times a day. The ryegrass mixture is advertised to show growth after as little as five days with full growth showing by 14 days. Ryegrass is often used as a cover while the permanent seed develops and after a few months depending on moisture the ryegrass will turn brown and die off. The package does not state the percentage of ryegrass seed just the four varieties of Fescue. There is a map of the US showing the best areas of the country for this product. Southern most states including my state of Florida are not in the idea zone so it will be interesting to see how the seed and grass do in this climate region. The 10-pound bag is advertised as a smart patch system to repair dead patches in your yard. Pennington guaranties the seed to grow and asks for feedback if the product does not perform as advertised. After watering twice a day, on the 5th day I could see sprouts of green poking up through the dirt. Two days later there were clumps of green visible but not evenly spread. The first spread was thinner than as I moved down the area and it could be that the seed was not evenly distributed in the bag.

          No results yet
So far, no growth. Think I applied to early in the year, This is a mix of seed, mulch and fertilizer. It is very dirty looking from the mulch. After spreading I could see the mulch and a few seeds. Guessing most of the seed is mixed in there. Got good coverage from the bag. The area I applied it to has several small bare spots. I prepared the area by breaking up the soil to be sure the seed could grow into the soil. It's hard to see where it's spread because of the color. The weather was in the 80s when I placed the seed. Since then, it's been cooler with 30s at night and 50s during the day. I think the ground may be too cold for the seed. When watered the mulch is slightly darker. Trying to keep it moist. Unfortunately, only had one day of rain the first week. So had to use a hose. After a week I covered the area with a thin layer of enriched topsoil and starter fertilizer. Still not seeing anything. Still hoping the seed will germinate once the ground warms up. I have had good experience with Pennington in the past and have my fingers crossed.

          Easy to use
Seed mixes are always a challenge to review because of so many factors that differ at every location. That being said this mix is very convenient to use since it already has the mulch and fertilizer in it. The 10 lb bag covers 200 sqft so it is mainly for just filling in some dead spots in the yard. This particular mix is specified for lawns that receive 4-hours to 6-hours of daily sunlight. I have had it down for a few days now and I am hoping to see some positive results soon.

Easy to use for patching lawns
I used this Smart Patch Tall Fescue Mix on a section of my lawn that gets plenty of direct sunlight in the summer. This product has four different varieties of grass seed, plus fertilizer and a wood fiber mulch. I first prepared the area with some hard raking to loosen the soil. Then I spread the mixture by hand to cover all of the bare area (about 100 square feet). The last step was to water it well. I will need to keep watering the area for several days to keep it adequately moist. I am very satisfied with how easy this product was to use. At this point it is a matter of watering and waiting for the new grass to start growing.

          Convenient size
Pennington 10 lbs. Smart Patch Tall Fescue Grass Seed with Mulch, Fertilizer - Received this product to repair some areas damaged by snow removal activities the past winter. The "spring" weather has not really been accommodating to plant growth yet. I prepared the area and applied the product as instructed and am awaiting to see results but so far I think the large temperature swings are stopping its growth.

          Fits a Need Perfectly
My rear lawn is a combination of Kentucky Blue and Tall Fescue grasses. They work well together. KBG spreads to repair and TF is hardy, but doesn’t spread. So after my 3 dogs get finished, there are bare spots among the TF grasses that need to be reseeded. The Pennington Smart Patch - TF is just the right product to do this. A combination of seed, fertilizer and mulch, it is easy to use of the bare spots - just work it in with a hand rake. Like all grass seedlings, keeping the seeds moist until germination is vital. The mulch and seed coating help in this endeavor. Looking forward to a full lawn soon.

          Great lawn patch repair solution
I admit, my lawn is not the greatest. There are multiple bare spots which require repair, so I thought I would try this Pennington patch mix. It's an interesting product - a mix of seed, mulch, fertilizer, and ... a tackifier. This last item was new to me. Pennington adds something that helps keep the seed from being washed away by rainfall, especially on slopes and hills. It hasn't rained since I applied the seed, so I can't comment on how well it works, but I sure like the idea. You can't imagine how many times rain has washed seed off my lawn. I applied the mix by hand - it's granules of mulch with seed and fertilizer mixed in - easy to apply where needed. The seed itself is a fescue blend which is claimed to sprout in as little as 5 days (that's pretty quick), and I am pretty sure that all the seed is perennial. Per the ingredient listing, the mix also has soil amendments (microbes). It seems to me that Pennington has put everything they know about growing grass into this mix. There are even online video instructions, if you would rather learn that way. I think this is really going to help improve my lawn.

          Good for spot repair
This is an all-in-one grass seed, fertilizer, mulch mix. The mulch portion takes up the majority of the bag, therefore the product needs to be applied rather heavy compared to just regular grass seed– one pound per four square feet goes fast. Therefore if you are trying to seed an entire yard, this is not the right product to use. However if you are just patching some spots left over after say some utility work in your yard, or something like that, this seems to work pretty well. I like that it’s formulated to grow in my part of the country (which happens to be a terrible place to grow grass because the summers are too hot and the winters too cold). We will see if it lasts. I will continue to water it until it gets solidly established, at that point I will leave it up to the weather and itself to see if it survives.

          Will give it a try
I received this product on April 20, 2022 via UPS. I have never tried Pennington Smart Patch so I am willing to give it a try and see how it works on my lawn since it took a beating last year because of lack of rain. As I have read the instruction on the package of seed everything seems easy to use to get lawn starting up again. Be fore I lay seed down I will be doing wok on the lawn like raking and aerate as needed for the seed to work. This weekend it is suppose to rain so I will be able to give it a try.

          Horrible!
My dogs pee on the lawn, and leave little patches behind. I bought this to fix those marks. The container says that the seeds will start to sprout in 5 days… it took 3 weeks to see anything. Plus only 1/8 of the grass seeds actually sprouted. My lawn looks WORSE after using this product. Absolutely terrible and a giant waste of money. Get this off of your shelves Home Depot!!!!!!

            Quick patch fix
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this product. Began planting in late fall, which isn’t totally ideal for grass seed but after just a month of use the seed has really come in and looked great despite the weather and not so diligent water on my part. I will definitely be buying again in spring (the ideal time for planting) and looking forward to an even better growth of grass in the lawn. Still, highly recommend this product - could not be an easier way to fix patches.

Nice concept, didn’t work for me—possibly my fault
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My backyard has a bare spot beside the fire pit. This product seemed to be the answer I was looking for to fix this problem. I prepared the spot for product application. After 2 weeks, I got sprouts, but am not sure if they’re grass seedlings or just weeds. I tried keeping the ground watered as directed, but sometimes I forgot. The directions on the bottle said to keep the area moist, so that could be why this product didn’t perform as it should have. I love the idea of an all included product, instead of having to buy straw separately to cover the freshly planted ground.
