[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So far so good. We have had hard time growing grass under our aimer maple tree. It looks like we have some decent sprouts, but I will say I can't give a full review on until the next four weeks. But for what it's worth, if you're looking for a review now it seems okay.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This seed works ok depending on where you need it. We tried it in two spots, one that is mostly shade and one that gets a lot of sun. The sun spot filled in a little, but the shade spot is having trouble. Weather could have played a factor in this as well so I can't totally fault the seed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have large oak trees in our yard and often get very water logged weather- it feels like our lawn doesn't dry out. This seed that is specific for shady areas has helped more than anything with rooting some grass and getting rid of the mud spots!

I like that the seeds are bright green in color so I can see where it is spread and it temporarily gives the illusion of grass color. This is easy to use and fills in bald spots in my backyard very well. It works!

Super easy to spread in a traditional spreader and a little goes a very long way. Saw great results after about two weeks and can't wait to see my lawn in another month. If your new to grass seed or want something really simple to use and maintain this is the seed mix for you!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received got Pennington Smart Seed Sun & Shade Mix and I am impressed. I needed to finish a bank our recently installed pool that doesn't get a lot of sun throughout the day and this worked wonders. It's really nice that it is seed + fertilizer because it started coming up in no time at all. Now I don't have to worry about erosion with the recent rain! Highly recommend it!

We tilled the front area and raked and planted the Bermudia grass and what was left we done the back area. It's been over a month with watering it and still no grass. What are we to do now, Smart Seed does not work here on the coast of North Carolina where it is hot and dry.

I tried to grow grass in a spot where a stump was removed in my front lawn. The area was patchy and looked terrible. I followed the instructions with this seed. Applied in the fall and started to see growth fast. Definitely recommend.

We overseed every fall. August weather and dogs typically do are yard in. I used a 20lb bag in a 100ft by 35ft back yard. There is only one spot that has gotten a slim amount of sprouts. The seed looks soft and like mush since the fertilizer coat is off of it. Bad seed.. Very disappointed in this product.

Best grass seed hands down. I got beautiful grass under trees, in the sun and shady areas. I would use this seed everytime I need fill or enhance my yard.

This performed very well in part sun/part shade area of my front lawn where I recently removed six large shrubs. Our soil was in good shape, but I still added about half a yard of sweet peet to help amend it and aid the growing process. I noticed growth after roughly eight days after watering twice consistently per day. There are still a couple of bare spots, but overall I’m very pleased with how this seed fared.

When we bought our house, it had Bermuda grass under two mature Oaks, which resulted in acompletely dead front lawn. We cleared the acorns, added some compost, then seeded with Pennington Dense Shade, and added another layer of fine compost and we started seeing germination. I don't have a before picture, but imagine brown dirt with hard acorn shells and a complete lack of green. I am attaching the after picture. The bare spots seen are not a germination problem but a site issue, where rainwater falls from the branches abov e, displacing the seed. We will overseed in fall and spring after the trees are trimmed so we will have no bare spots. The compost layer on top and watering 3 times is key as we have had unsuccessful attempts before. The compost holds moisture and provides it when the seeds need it.

Super easy to apply and worked quickly. Application was easier than I expected and I like that fertilizer is built in to save a step.

I just received my package, am pleased with the seed mix, germination rate, origin of seed, which is per testing label on bag: 26.05% Ridgeline Kentucky Bluegrass, germination 80%, origin WA. 6.15%Aries Kentucky Bluegrass, germination 80%, origin OR. 6.10% Wildhorse Kentucky Bluegrass, germination 80%, orgin WA. 0.30% Other Crop Seed. 0.02% Weed Seed. 61.38% Inert Matter. Now I get to clear, prep, and plant some patches of lawn.

We planted between our properties. The area receives sun only three hours per day. The seeds sprouted on the eighth day, and was ready for mowing after the third week.

My seeds are growing! Definitely recommend this product. I used an overseeder to break up the soil. A spreader and peat moss with dirt. It rained and the grass seeds are growing like crazy!!

Bought this 20 lb bag of seed and followed the instructions on putting it on my lawn. But after about 14 days I noticed more clover growing than grass. With the rain we have had in the past few days, the clover is out pacing the grass. Now I have a yard with half clover and half grass. I doubt if I'll buy this brand again

I bought a 20lb bag of Sun and Shade mix and put it down on my lawn which was mowed as low as possible. A large section of my yard was mostly dirt / soil. I put the seeds down on my lawn and after about 10 days i started noticing green coming up. Some was grass but after closer look I noticed that almost all of the green was actually clover growing. I'm so discussed and will probably buy this brand again.

Ok, I feel your pain. Here's our method; which I determined to be the most economical. We have 0.21 acres (12K square feet) of lawn. Our 1st experimental bare spot filled-in in 9 days! My 2 YouTube 'mentor videos' were from Rodge, from This Old House, (How to revive a brown lawn), and the 2nd one being (Grass Seed Test PROOF! Grass Seeding Before and After Results (LAWN CARE). With my wife's good back, I then instructed her to scrape the top 3 inches of soil, using a bow rake. To save $$, we reused and had her amend the native soil, by adding 'Sta-Green Flower and Vegetable Garden Soil Plus Fertilizer'-worked into the soil. She lay the seed in, not overly, but just to uniformly cover the area. I then watered the seed (before her covering it with a 1/4 inch of new soil-to protect from birds and the Sun). Once covered, I watered a second time. Then kept the area wet, by watering twice a day, for two weeks, then once a day for the 3rd week. None if it had rained. Tiny grass under the soil could be seen, we thought , within 3 days. Then nothing changed much for 8 days, other than new grass peeping through, under the top soil, in a total of 29 spots. We were sure we had failed, due to the native soil, we thought, may had been too clay-like. However, it did not appear to be clay at all, originally, when my wife worked it in, but after we saw what appeared to be ants building a clay-like mound, in one corner, we believed it to be. Then, on the ninth day, like some kind of miracle, my wife comes back-in, saying that it had sprouted all over. I went to check, and sure thing, it had sprouted throughout. I thought my neighbors fell sorry for me and had played a joke on me, by planting, in the middle of the night, grass all over the worked area ! But after a closer look, it was clear, that in fact, it had worked! The grass was so close & evenly spaced together, that it would had been impossible to get it in ! In hindsight, I would have her add more seed- overseeding

I followed the directions to a T, watered every day at least once, used a starter fertilizer to enhance growth. In fourteen days I had the largest patch of electric green crabgrass I have ever seen!! Now I have to wait for fall, use a bagger lawnmower and cut the grass as low as possible, cut out all the crabgrass and start again with someone else's product. Doesn't look anything like the picture on the bag. Thanks for all the extra work, Pennington! Don't buy this junk unless you like crabgrass!!

I failed the 1st year when I planted this seed with watering. I was tired of the weeds in my front porch area so I applied a herbicide which turned everything back to brown(about 1 week later). I racked the area and applied top soil made sure the area was leveled. I sprinkled the seed by hand (this bag was kept in a shed over a Nj winter) this was done in early May 2019. The most important product I applied with the seed was Ez -Straw mulch this keeps the birds at bay or any rodents trying to snatch up the seeds. The seeds do turn white and thought it was not working for days. But all the rain in May and with the ez straw mulch keeping the seeds moist I am all green in my front porch. Amazing project success with this seed.
