Another DEFECT item. Extend pole was not connected well one side. And cover part also easily loose. And it comes a strap but only one point to hook. Honestly not useful at all for this heavy tool. Switch was all the way bottom.. It was tough to me to hold ( I'm short.5'3") Simply returned.

        The extension feature is great!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The first in our 40V Ryobi outdoor power tools - stepping up from 18V. We needed more power and torque to handle numerous hedges and hedgerows. Year around growing season here requires frequent trimming. Our longest hedgerow is staggered between 6 and 9 feet tall. The extension pole has been very helpful - makes ladder work minimal. The higher voltage allows more battery run time. If you are strong enough to handle the 4ah battery vs 2ah, you'll get even longer use. It all requires some strength to handle when you're using the full extension. I'm a petite but strong female and am able to manage it. The positives are the extension capabilities, and the more powerful, longer battery capacity. The reason I rated 4 rather than 5 stars is the handle and grip area. A hedge trimmer is typically used for a fairly long period of time - versus like cutting a board with a power tool taking only minutes or seconds. You have to hold the power buttons/handles down while gripping hard with both hands to maneuver and hold the hedge trimmer. There is no padding or rubberized area on the power buttons or hand holding area. I had to find some rubberized padded gloves to keep it from being slippery and provide padding under my thumb pad on the hand holding the power levers. I've given our hedges two full trimmings with this new trimmer so have gotten to really test it out well. My wish list would be the improved grip area, and also wish it had a slightly wider branch capacity. Viburnum's grow fast, and even new growth branches struggle to fit. I realize this is a battery tool, but it's a wish for the future as improvements are made. We have no intention of going with gas powered tools, so I'm grateful for how well the battery tools work. All in all we're happy with it and it's our go-to trimmer for main hedge trimming.

Much better than I thought it would be.
I have a Ryobi 22" hedge trimmer, but my 12' high hedge is now so wide I can't reach across. This 18" isn't as hefty, but with one of the extenders I can easily reach across, saving me a ton of ladder climbing and more. It'll also be perfect for other large shrubs that we just can't reach across or to the top. My only concern was the delivery. It came quickly. However, the delivery driver didn't leave it by our house door ... he left it by our garage door. Waiting to be stolen.

Didn’t fit together and extension is pointless
I bought this having loved all my other Ryobi products. But first issue was the poles don’t seem to fit together all the way. I spend 20 minutes trying all ways, reading the instructions, watching YouTube videos trying to figure how to get them together all the way. No luck. However, with the screw connectors I was able to make connection enough to raise the product up. It is way to heavy even without the extension. So disappointed. Hard pass. Do not buy.

Excellent tool. I cleared a patch of Poison Oak that had grown wildly along a drainage canal bank and even up into several Oak trees that line the banks of the canal. The added length of the pole was a great advantage to avoid contact with the Poison Oak. I even added the 2nd extension from my pole chainsaw to the Pole Hedge Trimmer to get at the growth up in the Oak trees without using a ladder!

              Powerful Pole Hedge Trimmer
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this to trim brush and trees that run along a 1/4 mile long driveway to our lake property. This 40V Pole Hedge Trimmer makes easy work of trimming back the brush and low hanging branches, and is a perfect complement to a pole chainsaw for tree trimming work.

                Pros over gas
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Chose this over gas since I needed to haul it up a tree. It's not constantly running while you move around and it's Lighter and no spills. Was still strong enough to cut stems and small branches

                  Poor wiring
Second time trimmer has ceased to work. Opened it up to find wires crimped repeatedly around spring. This occurs when head is adjusted. Poor design and virtually impossible to service. Have 9 other ryobi products and not one issue.

                    Impossible trigger pressure!
Many have stated the machine is hard to use,(esp trigger pessure/weight). I'm a big, dude. I'm a mechanical engineer and an auto mechanic with big strong hands. The force needed to hold the trigger is a deal breaker! I can handle the weight, but I can only hold the trigger down for several minutes at a time before my fingers get sore. Ryobi, Please give us more than your standard "canned" response! You should fix this with a longer lever. Easy Fix,see pic! (My fix: JB weld aluminum extension)

                      Already paid for itself!
I've used this twice to trim a 150' long and 7' tall hedge and 3 very tall (13') bushes along with numerous azalia bushes. I was paying a yardman about $150 about twice a year to trim all these. I wear out way before the battery needs a recharge.

                          Convenient Light Duty Trimmer
Suitable for homeowner use to trim new-growth hedge without the need for a ladder, comprising three sections which connect with screw-together couplings (for mechanical and electrical connectivity), this trimmer will be of use for the occasional use typical of a small residence. The mostly pictorial operator’s manual includes some detail for how to sharpen the trimmer blades. In addition to the three major parts of the tool, a battery pack, battery charger and an adjustable sling strap are supplied. The charger may be used as a bench type or mounted on the wall using the provided keyhole openings (spacing shown on the base by molded-in lettering). A four (4) position trimmer head is provided, adjusted by depressing a spring-loaded button. The operation of the button is a little sluggish and, for some reason, a ninety-degree position is not one of the provided detented positions. The nine (9) foot reach will be suitable for most homeowners. The specs indicate a five-eighths-inch maximum diameter cut dimension…which may be a little optimistic. When compared to a handheld cordless (84V) trimmer, the pole trimmer came up short in the power department. Again, for trimming of new growth hedges the pole trimmer will be adequate, but for established growth (for cutting back overgrown bushes) it will be slow going. The provided shoulder strap (once adjusted for your comfort) provides reasonable support when the pole is essentially vertical, but as one lowers the pole from the vertical handling becomes more awkward. The plastic component of the strap anchor at the trigger end of the tool appears to be a potential failure point (and its function is not clear from reading the manual). While the supplied blade guard is more difficult to remove/install than other trimmers the “closed” construction provides a convenient way to capture errant lubrication when preparing the tool for storage after use. The supplied battery charger performs its function quickly, but the flimsy wiring between the “wall wart supply” and the charger base will be a potential failure point. This is a problem with many chargers of this type, not limited to this application. If your hedges are within the nine (9) foot range of extension, and if you keep up with the trimming to those times when there is only new growth, this tool will be usable for most homeowners. Score an extra point if you already have tools using this 18 V battery.

                          What a great hedge trimmer!
I have several hedge trimmers, both corded and battery operated. I got this cordless pole hedge trimmer specifically for tall hollies, wisteria, and privet hedges. The holly in these photos was cut down to a nub about 5 years ago. As you can see it is 6-8 ft tall now and needed trimming. The wisteria vine is in the edge of the woods and is too far away to use a corded trimmer. This tool is the answer to both problems. The larger spaces between the blades on this trimmer allow you to cut some of those larger vines and branches that the average trimmer won’t cut. You can either use the full 9 ft length or you can remove the middle section and have a 6 ft pole trimmer. For most cuts I found the shorter length to be enough and also easier to handle. My only problem with this tool is the lock-out switch. It is awkward to press it and pull the trigger at the same time.

POWERFUL; CUTS WELL; NOT LIGHTWEIGHT; NOT EASY FOR EVERYONE TO USE
The RYOBI ONE+ 18-Volt 18 in. Cordless Battery Pole Hedge Trimmer with 2.0 Ah Battery and Charger did an outstanding job of trimming perennial bushes - much better than previous options. I used it to cut a Cranberry Cotoneaster which has either been difficult or tedious to prune in the past. Not a problem with this unit. See the photo. It definitely cuts up to its advertised 5/8" diameter. It is easy to add or subtract the extension pole. The hedge trimmer may be easily positioned to one of four options. I found that it was easier to use without the shoulder strap and I never could get the quick release option which is not explained anywhere in the instructions to work. It is the red thingy near the trigger portion of the strap. Regrettably, the hedge trimmer did not live up to its description of “while its lightweight, compact design makes it comfortable and easy for ANYONE to operate.” There were two reasons why it was not easy for me. The first challenge is that the hedge trimmer component of the tool is not lightweight and being on the end of the pole means that it requires strong arms to support the weight with such an extended center of weight distribution. The higher you want to use the hedge trimmer, as one would infer being a pole hedge trimmer, the more strength that the tool requires when using it. If you add the pole extender, the weight issue is magnified. Of the four trimmer positions, the straight option was the easiest to use for on the other three the center of weight distribution shifted which made it more difficult to control. If the hedge trimmer part could be made lighter weight, it would be a great tool. It is versatile in that the pole extender is optional. The second problem for me was that the trigger on my unit required considerable strength to keep it engaged. A trigger lock would have been very helpful. Since the trigger will likely be behind the user, that makes it more difficult to press. I have other RYOBI outdoor tools and have never had a problem with the trigger. Because of the difficulties noted, I used it for only 30 minutes. In that time it used only 50% of the battery. Both the battery and charger have been improved since my previous units. The battery now has a fuel gauge which is extremely helpful vs. the earlier versions of the 18V battery. See the photo where the new charger and battery are on the left. I would recommend this unit for those who have strong arms, wrists, and large hands. The unit is made in Viet Nam and comes with a 3-year limited warranty.

Hello, Barbqluvr - We appreciate you taking the time to write a thoughtful and in-depth review! As for the weight of the trimmer, we do recommend using the should harness for assistance. And the most typical cutting application is to position the unit at an angle of 60° or less, depending on the specific situation. As the angle of the trimmer shaft to ground increases, the difficulty of making the first cut increases. We hope this information helps! Expandable, adjustable, and cuts with ease.
I'll start by sharing some features and specification's of this product then share my personal experience. This kit included the Hedge Trimmer head, intermediate shaft (extension pole), power handle, blade gaurd, shoulder harness, battery, charger, and instruction manual. If you purchase the tool only you will not recieve the Battery and charger. The hedge Trimmer is powered by an 18v motor. The blade is 18 in. long and has a cutting capacity of 5/8 in. It can deliver 3,000 cut's a minute. With the extension Pole connected this unit extends to 9 ft 4in. Without the extension pole it has a length of 6ft. 4 in. The unit weighs 8.25 lbs. You have to slide the lock out switch before you engage the trigger in order to get power to the motor. This is a safety feature to prevent accidental starts. The Hedge Trimmer head has a 4 position pivot. With the push of a button you can change the pivot angle of the Hedge Trimmer head and lock it into 1 of the 4 positions. This Hedge Trimmer made it a lot easier for me to reach the top and back of the hedges. Being able to pivot the head allows you to get that perfect angle on those hard to reach area's. I had a couple tree branches growing down into the hedge's. I was pleasantly surprised when I decided to try and cut them and it cut without hesitation. Some of the branches were about 1/2 in. Thick. This blade cut through them like a hot knife through butter. The included shoulder strap is adjustable and has a soft rubber guard for a comfortable fit. These trimmers cut really well, I just glided over the hedges with one pass and it cut through everything with ease. The extension Pole is very easy to put on and remove. You clip it into place and then screw on the ends to keep it locked in to place. I was worried about my arm's getting tired while holding this up fully extended but if you use the shoulder strap and adjust it properly you can balance the weight. I did the whole side and front of the house without feeling the need to take a break. This tool is powerful and sharp. Between the lockout switch and blade gaurd it offers great safety features. I had this unit up and running within minute's of pulling it out of the box. It gives you the option to use it with or without the extension Pole. If you are only trimming small hedges you can remove the extension Pole. If you are trimming tall or wide hedges then you can add the pole for extra reach. If you are looking for a great pair of Hedge trimmers look no further. This tool is amazing.

                          This trimmer keeps you grounded!
I was interested in a battery powered hedge trimmer to replace my corder trimmer. The cord is difficult to keep out of the way of the cutter and wrangle as you move from hedge to hedge. It makes using it a bit unsafe as the cord can become a focus. I was intrigued to find the Ryobi extension trimmer and thought it might help with another problem I have - having to stand on a ladder with the trimmer to get to the top of my holly bush. It’s a very nicely designed unit with a very efficient cutting head. For my purposes, I only used the single extension, which got me high enough to do the job. The strap that comes with the unit is handy for distributing the weight of it. It makes it very usable for lower hedges too and let’s you stand back from your work a bit for eying in good cuts. I was able to easily trim my tall holly bush without having to get out a ladder!

This hedge cutter can do a lot of work, but it could use some improvements.
I liked that it was long enough to reach the brush that was over the bank. However, it was difficult to control and hold the trigger down when it is fully extended I wished the cutter could cut a larger branch as some of the black berry vines are about an inch thick. The angle adjustment on the cutter head was helpful for cutting things at ground level. I found the trigger mechanism difficult to hold down for extended periods of time. The trigger is too small for me to get more than one finger on it when I have gloves on. My finger gets tired long before the job is done. My finger also slips off the trigger. I thought the battery might not last long enough to get much cutting done, however it lasted long enough to get the job done and make me good and tired. I found it difficult to balance the cutter when trying to cut when it if fully extended. It was awkward, difficult to control. I like the fact the battery recharges fairly quickly. The cutter does a good job of cutting and I would have given it a higher score if it wasn’t so difficult to work with.

Fantastic addition to my Ryobi collection of tools
I avoid ladders in the yard at all costs which made the Ryobi Cordless Pol Hedge Trimmer very attractive. Pruning and trimming shorter shrubs, roses, etc are a piece of cake for me. But at 5ft 1in pruning and managing height on ornamental trees, informal hedges and tall bushes can be a real challenge. I waited for a dry warmer day this winter to try out the Ryobi pole hedge trimmer and tackle a few jobs I've been putting off. I was able to trim off those long gangling branches and reshape a couple tall bushes. That job required the full extension of the hedge trimmer. I found the full length of the tool somewhat unwieldly and out of balance with the business end being heavy and difficult to trim with much precision. The tool worked flawlessly but my height and upper body strength may be limitations in using all extensions on the trimmer. Maybe with more time with the tool and warmer weather the outcome may be different. Here on my homestead I'm always looking for tools that ease the time and effort on yard maintenance. After working a little with the Ryobi pole hedge trimmer I then moved to my 24 fruit tree orchard using only the base end with the trimmer head. I was really impressed with the first couple cuts as I pruned and soon realized the clean cuts this tool produced would make trimming to control for height a whole lot easier. By adjusting the trimmer head at different angles it was easy to trim letting the tool do much of the work. I keep all my fruit trees at 7ft by trimming the upper growth - that makes it much easier to pick fruit - no ladders. I then hand prune to manage fruiting the tree itself. In 1/2 hr I was able to trim for height 26 trees which made light work of the hand pruning. I've included pics showing the clean cuts I was able to achieve. All in all I found the Ryobi Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer a winner and highly recommend.

Handy Hedge Trimmer for Hard to Reach Places
The RYOBI ONE+ 18-Volt 18 in. Cordless Battery Pole Hedge Trimmer with 2.0 Ah Battery and Charger is an interstingly designed tool. It comes with a powerful 2 amp battery, articulating cutting head and the ability to adjust the length from 3 feet to over 9 feet reach. It comes with a shoulder strap to help stabilize it at full length and has a strong cutting head. It easily cut jasmine, boxwood and small tree branches. Battery life was pretty good, too.

Too heavy with the extension attached
This RYOBI 18 Volt Pole Hedge Trimmer has an 18 inch cutting surface and includes a 2 Ah battery, charge and shoulder strap. I found when the intermediate pole is attached to extend the full reach to 9 feet the entire unit is unbalanced which makes it extremely difficult to hold the cutting head up to the surface that needs trimming. Removing the intermediate pole helps (and reduces the length accordingly) but it is still slightly off balance. The location of the shoulder strap causes one to have to reach behind them to pull the trigger. I found this awkward. I also found the pressure required to hold the trigger down was too much. There is no lock on mechanism so holding the stiff trigger was painful and resulted in the trigger being released and relocked numerous times during use. The product does trim well based on my testing. Being able to adjust the trim head in four different angles with a simple push button helped me get into difficult locations more easily. The small battery did not add much weight to the product. It might have balanced better if the battery was heavier to offset the long pole.

Trim high and wide with no ladder
I have many Ryobi tools –they offer great value and performance. This pole trimmer carries on the tradition. The battery power motor unit attached to the trim head is 6 feet 4 inches long and adding the extension pole increases total length to 9 feet 4 inches. Pole attaches easily via a hand screw mount, no tools needed. At just over 8 pounds, its light enough to maneuver holding it high to reach top branches. The cutting head pivots from straight to 90 degrees with four positions of pivots with the press of a button. The unit has a shoulder strap to help maneuver at extended height. This pole trimmer is powered by an 18-volt 2 Amp Hr. battery and comes with a charger. The 18-volt One Plus battery can power a large selection of over 250 different tools in the Ryobi line. 18-volt power offers light weight yet plenty of operating torque for most tools. The 18-inch bar length and dual action blades have a capacity of up to 5/8 on an inch branch. The 3000 cutting speed handles trimming chore effortlessly. The handle provides good control of the unit. The trimmer comes with a removable hedge sweep that helps clear clippings as you trim. This is an easy to use unit that is essential for trimming high and wide shrubs. No ladder needed! The pivoting heads add to its versatility. The trimmer is backed by a three-year warranty and Ryobi’s excellent customer service

                          Ryobi Cordless Hedge Trimmer
I ordered this tool to help with a hedge I trim occasionally, because it’s battery powered I don’t have to drag out extension cords to accomplish this task. The Ryobi is strong with dual action blades that cut smoothly limbs up to 5/8” inch, it comes with an extension that reaches up to nine feet, it also has an adjustable head with four positions to cut easily most hedges. I like the weight at about eight lbs.it’s easy to handle.

Excellent tool for hard to reach trimming jobs
I ordered the RYOBI ONE+ 18-Volt 18 in. Cordless Battery Pole Hedge Trimmer with 2.0 Ah Battery and Charger to work on some of my taller shrubbery and eastern white pine trees that are getting beyond the handheld hedge trimmer. The most important thing I was looking for was the flexible trimmer control. This allows me to shape a flat top, pyramidal of flat sided tree/shrub from the ground level. The unit when fully assembled with the three poles is somewhat heavy because of the length of the fully assembled tool. Ryobi does include a shoulder strap which I will be using to make sure I don’t have an accidental “shaving” on the tree/shrub that I did not want. The tool is well made like all other Ryobi products (should you have any of them). The battery works with other Ryobi tools so if you are reading this review it does include the battery. Make sure you need one or can use one of your other compatible batteries. If you have a battery, simply but on the tool to save some money. I also found there is no easy way to store the unit when broken down into the three pieces so I kept the box for storage as this will not be a tool I use every week. I don’t want to lose the shoulder strap and the original box does a great job of keeping everything safe until the next use. The Ryobi trimmer also includes a 5 year warranty which is a nice added featured. Overall, I have been happy with all previous Ryobi purchases and expect this to be no different in years to come.

                          Life saver
Every Ryobi product I have bought has not let me down to date and this one is no exception. It has 3 parts to it to extend roughly 8 feet but you can use without the extra extension for about 6 feet. The blades are extremely sharp. The pole has good balance based on the battery and blade offset. You need to make sure you use the provided strap to balance and hold the pole or else you will be fatigued in no time. This is so much safer than what I used to have to do and use a ladder and a started 20 inch hedge trimmers, talk about dangerous. The only part of this product I'm not a huge fan of is the blade adjustment. You can adjust it up and down to change your angle for your cutting based on how high or low you compared to the bush however the button is pretty stiff. It took me a few times of pressing the button and trying to adjust it up or down. Maybe its just stiff since it's new and will loosen up once it's broken in. Other than that it's a game changer. The battery provided has a gauge indicator on how much juice is left so that's very convenient.

                          Just What I Needed
I have always wanted a dual action cordless pole hedge trimmer for cutting small tree limbs from low growing trees in the front yard as well as my neighbors branches that grow over our common wall. The Ryobi Pole Hedge Trimmer is well balanced with its included carrying strap and 4 position pivoting head. It cuts very well with a massive 5/8" cut capacity that clears away the trimmings as you cut. Because of the amount of cutting I was planning on it was easy to change out batteries as the work progressed and the included 2Ah battery doesn't add heavy bulk to the handle. I have the RYOBI ONE+ system so I am confident that this will be a great addition to my other Ryobi One+ 18 Volt tools. Tool and Charger Made in Vietnam, Battery Made in China all with a 3 Year Warranty.

A bit awkward to maneuver at first
This long trimmer was wonderful for getting around our large, thorny bougainvillea shrub. So handy to not have to pull out the long heavy duty extension cords. Seems a bit awkward for maneuvering at first - like it's off balance. Has a very strong blade. The pivoting head is a brilliant feature and is perfect for our boxwood hedge as well as our shorter trees that we want to prevent from getting too tall. The handle without the extender is 52” long and would inhibit horizontal control in tight areas like our 32” walkway from garage to backyard with hedges on both sides. But, being able to pivot the blade allows us to have good control with the body of the pole vertical and the head horizontal.
