I got this home. Installed it and there were several critical error messages. I decided I was going to take it back. When I drained it, there was a lot of white sand/sediment that came out of the tank. Not sure why a brand new water heater would have anything at all in the tank. After reading all the reviews of others having similar control board and sensor issues, I decided I wasn't going to risk it. I returned the heater and bought a different brand. Same Hybrid style though. I think this one is just too complex and with all the sensors and computers it's just asking to break. Go lower tech, it's just a water heater.

I bought the 50 gallon version of this. Got it home, installed it and it had several critical error messages. I drained it. When I did, all kinds of white sand sediment came out. Not sure why a brand new water heater should have anything in the tank. I returned it. I wasn't going to mess around with warranty or even try another one. Based on the other reviews of this brand, I decided it wasn't worth the risk. I bought a different brand, same style, very happy with the performance and money savings.

Just installed professionally last week. So far, it appears to be learning our useage pattern and some mornings will provide less hot water than we want. Much more efficient than old style resistant electric heater. The EcoNet Wi-Fi feature could use improvement to be able to provide access to sensor and energy usage data.

Not the easiest installation for a hot water heater. We ended up just sending the condensate to a bucket. We only see an inch or so of water per week. Energy use looks good so far (3 weeks). The cool air is nice to help cool the garage. Fun to show off to friends and neighbors, which can't be said with most hot water heaters.

This has been a rock-solid investment. I have a "server rack" that pumps out some heat in the basement. This was purchased not only to cut down on electric cost but to help with heat/humidity in the basement. Install was dead simple, minus the terrible brass fittings I got from Amazon that leaked everywhere. Took two of us about 3 hours including removing the old one, re-locating the expansion tank, and installing this. Couple of things I would mention for future folks: - Check your clearances! This is taller than a normal 50 gallon and also requires extra room to remove the filter. - Make sure you have a way to drain the condensation. As this is a heat pump there IS going to be condensation off the coils. - There is a secondary (overflow) condensation line that's 3/8" threaded. This is really hard to find. Make sure you have a way to connect the overflow to something. - The threaded nipples CAN be unscrewed from the tank. Use caution when removing fittings as you may remove the entire piece which make for an epic pain. If one does unscrew pay attention to the "up" marking and make sure to put it back as shown. - Make absolute sure you fill the tank before powering on. OPEN UP THE HOT WATER ON MULTIPLE FAUCETS. This lets the air out of the tank and the water in. When you have you more air coming out, and its water, the tank is full. Hope that all helps if you are going to DIY! It's not a hard project, but there are some things to keep in mind.

Great water heater so far. Like the connectivity and being able to adjust on my phone app. In Hybrid mode, electric usage is in my opinion relative low. Using my rainforest app which shows my energy usage from the smart meter on my home, it only seems to increase about 1KW when in Hybrid Mode. Seems low, but I've done it several times and it is always the same incremental add. It electric mode, it jumps up around 6KW. Best to use it Hybrid only mode if your looking for energy savings which I am. There are a couple of things Rheem could do to this heater that would have gotten all 5 stars. 1) Locations for the hot/cold lines. I'd say put them on the side of the unit. Made plumbing more difficult than necessary and I don't really like seeing the flex lines coming out in front. 2) The condensate fittings should come with the unit. What a hassle when you think your about done and another trip to Home Depot to get some fittings.

Just installed this myself 2 days ago. A few things to note: 1 - It is very heavy and it is TOP heavy making it difficult to load into the back of a truck without tipping it (it's not supposed to lay down) and difficult to securely strap. I recommend having the store deliver it to your home. 2 - My old water heater had both the cold inlet and hot outlet on the top of the unit. This one has the hot on the side, about 1/3 way down from top and the cold way down at the bottom. Make sure you have enough pex and fittings to reach both. A Hot water heater install kit with 18" lines won't cut it. 3 - You will need fittings for the condensate lines. A 3/4" MIP to hose barb elbow and a straight 3/8" MIP to hose barb along with enough of each hose to reach a drain or condensate pump if you don't have a drain nearby. I'm very impressed with the unit. It brought water up to temp pretty quickly when first fired up (on heat-pump only mode) which really made the small laundry room its in cold. Once the water was up to temperature the unit shut down and didn't run at all until hot water was used. It must be very well insulated. I can't wait to see what a difference it makes on my electric bill.

This replaced my 15 yr old propane gas 50 gallon a few weeks ago. The best rated of only a few choices in hybrid systems. If it runs like it does now this was the answer. I almost installed a propane tank-less and price and venting were concerns for the savings. I have had electric tank-less units in smaller homes that worked well. With only 2 of us we have a larger house and both tank-less choices were expensive. The propane 50 gal replacement for mine cost half of this hybrid but propane prices change and run up to $400-500 a year for hot water. I set my temp at 130. I tried 120 default and found it went cooler before the end of a shower. I tried the combo heat pump and electric for a better recovery. When I run heat pump only at 130 there is no temp drop. The shower mixer is more in the middle so less tank water seems to be used for each shower and no drop. The bonus of blowing cold air in my garage is great since I am in Florida anything helps. I had to install a condensation drain. Not hard to do. I extended the supply and hot supply plumbing from the old heater with short pipe on top. Not bad. On the hot fitting I added galvanized elbow and 24in pipe plus a nipple for flex supply above the unit. Put the flex supply on the bottom fitting. Wired a pigtail electric cable to the wall prewired for electric. Flipped the breaker on and cooled off with heat pump air after the job. I recommend HD delivery to home after reading not to lay it down and any warranty issues. $55 more and delivered in garage. Delivery was over a week but good delivery service.

I was looking forward to installing this hybrid heat pump water heater to replace a leaking electric one. Once installed professionally, the unit's fan wouldn't turn on in heat pump mode and a bunch of error codes came on. I called Rheem who had a subcontractor tech come out; he determined that it was a bad fan and had Rheem send out a new one. A few days later the wrong part arrived... it was a control module for operating the unit, not a fan. I called the subcontractor who had Rheem try again, and the fan arrived a few days later; strangely, they sent out a second fan a few days after that. Then it took another 2 WEEKS for the subcontractor to come out to install one of the fans, as they were very busy and shorthanded. He finally arrived, and I was hopeful, but then he told me that the way the unit is manufactured, the screws holding the fan in place are not accessible, so he called the factory, and they're replacing the unit. I was given instructions by the tech to go to Home Depot, and they would have notes to assist me with getting a plumber to replace my old unit, but this wasn't the case. They told me I had to bring the unit to them. So when I had more free time I was back on the phone with Rheem who told me a plumber would contact me within 24 hours to swap out the unit. I'm disappointed, but still hopeful that the new unit will work once installed. If it does and is consistent, I'll raise my rating from 2 stars. But this is frustrating and time-consuming. Fortunately the "Electric Only" mode works and has provided me with hot water while I try and get this problem resolved.

Best water heater ever! I have 4 girls plus me taking showers one after the other and have yet to run out of hot water. Unit is simple to use. The only down fall is installation was tougher than a normal water heater. I diy'd it and end up having to move supply lines and run drain lines

Installed it in the garage, its very quiet, no more noise than a refrigerator, when the compressor comes on all you hear is the fan if you are next to it.My plumber charged me $400 to remove the old one and install the new unit and I installed and connected the condensate lines myself to the drainage and hauled the old one to the dump.

up to this point i am happy with the unit it is quiet and works well in hybrid even in a cool basement. it dose cool the basement down buy will be adding venting to redirect the air out in the winter and into the main living space in the summer to take advantage of the cool air. it dose its job of making hot water. we are a family of 5 so we use hot water regularly and haven't had any problems so far.also in my area comed gave me $500 rebate for energy efficient product.

This seems to be a great upgrade from out 20 year old electric water heater. No issues in two weeks of installation and I haven't noticed it switch over to traditional electric during use yet. We're using it in a garage in Oregon during the winter with ambient temperatures around 35-45degF. FYI, the unit I purchased with serial number XE50T10HD50U0 did not include built-in wifi or the external wifi module. I needed to purchase the external Rheem EcoNet Wifi Module, REWRA631EWH to enable the "Mobile Alerts" feature. This wasn't well advertised, just be prepared to spend and extra $50-80 for the module to get it connected.

Initially purchased this unit on 2/3/17, it arrived at HD on the 11th however was dented and unusable. We re-ordered that day and got 10% off and the unit arrived on the 21st. I was already annoyed that this turned into an 18 day delivery when the unit was only going from Ohio to NY. The install was straight forward, had to add some copper to convert from top connections to side connections and also add PVC for condensate drain lines. Electrical was standard red/black/ground 240v. At about 5:30 pm I turned the unit on, had hot water within 30 minutes, the fan was running as was VERY quiet (I was worried prior to purchase about the noise level but I can assure you, I could sleep next to this thing and not be bothered.) Now for the bad part. I went down to the basement the next morning before work at about 4:00 am to check on things and noticed that the fan was not running and that the screen was off... Having hot water for my shower already I thought maybe it went into some kind of sleep mode.... I tapped the screen and flipped the breaker to try and get it back. nothing worked. I contacted Rheem and they suggested the capacitor or the control panel was bad. Checked the capacitor and it was within spec (12.9 rating, measured 12.4) I believe the screen to be bad. So long story short, the unit didn't even work for 12 hours. Now I have no hot water and need to wait until 8-5 central time to hopefully get a control panel overnight shipped. NOT COOL! The rebates are good and the price was right, after all said and done this unit will only have cost me about $300 with tax credits and national grid credit. Something to keep in mind too is that I am discovering that local HVAC / plumbing companies are either not familiar at all or have only heard of these hybrid heat pump water heaters so troubleshooting locally is not all that possible.

This hot water heater is everything that was advertised. Has had no alerts since being put in service & has supplied all the hot water we require with no drop in temperature. It operates so quietly you are not aware of it. It has only been in operation for 2-weeks, so at this time we cannot say how much our utility bill has dropped.

                  Warranty Issues with Rheem
First off the hot water heater is not horrible, stuff happens! However, since Rheem does not have warranty repair companies in my area I had to find one. We had a constant indication of a leak. I found a plumber, paid them what Rheem said they would reimburse and sent in the documents reflecting such. When they received the documents they requested additional documents. Needless to say I only have what was given to me. So, I will no longer purchase Rheem products! You have to back your products!

Opt out for something more reliable
We received unit #1, had all the plumbing done and after all that noticed, that the unit was missing a hot wire. The electrician confirmed, that the wire was indeed missing, not just fell inside the unit. Please note, HD does not provide a replacement, so you need to disconnect, return the faulty unit, order a new one, pay again for the installation (which Rheem partially covers). 10days of wait no hot water of a new unit, installed, all the electrical seems fine, but it just does not turn on.

After having the water heater up and running for almost two months, I can honestly say we love it. It is very efficient and works as advertised. It is noisier than a standard electric water heater which is to be expected because of the heat pump, but not bad at all. I would say it is a bit noisier than a refrigerator but not as loud as a window air conditioner. I have left it in Eco mode since since I installed it and the heating elements have yet to be called for. The only negative is the app. It doesn't give a whole lot of useful information and the geo fencing doesn't work at all. You can turn on and off, set temp and change modes. I have not tried the scheduling feature yet because I was hoping to just use the geo fencing to automatically switch to away mode. Overall very happy.

                      Dave,

It sounds like your experience with the ProTerra 50 Gal. Hybrid Water Heater has been mostly positive! It’s great to hear that it’s efficient and meeting your needs. The noise level being a bit higher due to the heat pump is understandable, and it’s good to know it’s not too disruptive.

Regarding the app, it’s unfortunate that the geo-fencing feature isn’t working as expected. Hopefully, future updates will improve its functionality. In the meantime, trying out the scheduling feature might be a good alternative to manage the modes effectively.
