Paint could not handle the heat!
I bought this paint for my fire pit because it said it was rated for up to 2000 degrees, upon first time I used the fire pit the paint simply rubbed off. Do not buy this paint it is not worth the money, especially not for a fire pit!

We are here to help! To ensure a complete cure, Rust-Oleum Automotive High Heat Spray Paint must go through the heat cycle listed on the can. We also do not recommend this product for use on the interior of the fire pit, as it will not withstand the direct contact with an open flame. If unable to put the object through the recommended heat cycle, then we recommend Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint instead for the exterior of the fire pit. The existing application would also need to be removed prior to recoating.

needs to be heated to 450F for 1 hour to cure
I spray painted an antique cast iron surround and summer cover. The thiught was that surround was potentially going to be exposed to high heat since the flame tempeature of natural gas is up there. I mainly went with this paint for its flat finish. It looked exacly as intended but despite days of dry time in climate control the paint kept rubbing off when touched. Running my hand across the surface turned my fingers black. I contacted rustoleum through their website and they replied within 24 hours stating “The High Heat Paint requires a heat cure at 450°F, for 1 hour, to cure and fully harden. Without a heat cure the product will be susceptible to scratching and may rub off.” Unfortunatly they suggested I sand or strip my entire priject to remove the pain and use their Stops Rust Protective Enamel paint instead. The instructions on the can did not call out the full cure procedure. Despite their promp customer service, Im unsatified by the lack of clarity in their product spec and description. Stripping the paint off of a large object thats already been treated with multiple products prior to painting is extremely frustrating and an added unexpected expense.

We understand the frustrations, Sandra, and we appreciate your feedback. Our Rust-Oleum Automotive High Heat Spray is a specialty coating, which does require heating to fully cure. There are specific heating instructions on the label that detail the process of heating parts on or off the vehicle; either by running the vehicle, or baking them at specific temperatures and times. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

We appreciat the feedback. Please keep in mind that the Rust-Oleum Automotive High Heat Spray needs to be heated according to the application instruction provided on the product label in order to cure properly. For a fire pit, we recommend using the Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray to ensure the best results.

Easy to use. Has correct pressure and a refined nozzle. Good spray pattern A well-charged can that makes me feel I got my money's worth. As opposed to some other brands (of aerosol paint), when using a proper spray technique I seldom exhaust the can before depleting its contents. (My most common concern is that others' aerosol paints are undercharged.) Rust-Oleum (I use their industrial primers and paints extensively at work - and about my house.) produces high quality consistent coatings with good solids / volatile proportions, dense pigmentation, yielding good coverage, tenacious adhesion and long wear. On a properly prepared surface, coated under the right conditions, I get the same results with this aerosol as I get with brushing, rolling or spraying the same product. Of course, for the convenience of aerosol, one pays a higher total price for equivalent coverage and DFT. Stands up well to the intended exposure. Survives better than many (supposed) VHT coatings. I recently coated the skirting (not the firebox) of one of my pellet stoves. The result convinced me to use this for all my future springtime refurbishments. I first began using this on ancillary engine compartment parts. So, having it available, I expanded my use to those stoves and similar applications.

Rustoleum is no longer recommending this product for use in open flame environments like fireplaces, BBQ an grills. Also, read instructions carefully this product must be heated, cooled and heated to be effective. So it may be good for auto, motorcycle, power equipment. Lastly, even Rustoleums other high heat product showing a BBQ on the can is NOT recommended by Rustoleum. Check out Rutland for open fire equipment.

Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint can be applied to metal surfaces that reach temperatures above 200°F and don't have direct contact with an open flame. Some suitable examples would be the exterior of grills, fire pits, or wood burning stoves. Heat curing is only required on surfaces that will reach temperatures above 500°F.

          Great BUT ...
Works great. Just make sure you prep whatever you are spraying well. MUCH CHEAPER "somewhere" else.

Works good! A little undersized by about an ounce for 2, but otherwise it works good! The spray tip spilled all over my hands and its taken nearly a week for the paint to wear off. Overall, I'm satisfied.
