Spreads very unevenly
This is a badly designed spreader that does not spread evenly. As someone else noted, its design is such that it concentrates most of the fertilizer near the wheels of the spreader, resulting in striping. This is so bad that the traditional method of assuring uniformity - spreading at half rate in perpendicular directions - does not work. Instead of stripes, you'll get a cross hatch pattern. This is cheaper than a pro-grade spreader, but you'll be throwing away money by badly fertilizing your yard every time you use it. A pity, because their drop spreaders were good - I used them for years before moving to a bigger house. Stay away from this one.

Don't buy does not broadcast spread Scotfertilizer
Put Scotts turff builder with moss killer on my lawn using a brand new spreader. Month later most moss is still there but now i have dark green stripes because the fertilizer didn't broadcast. it just fell straight down. And I did walk at a brisk pace. Must just be a bad design.

        I don't recommend this spreader
I owned 2 of these units and both failed the same way, the second after just a couple uses speading pelletized limestone. The plastic shaft that drives the rotating feeder arm inside the bin broke. Scotts should pay a few cents more for a metal shaft to fix the problem. Also, the spreading disk is below the tops of the wheels, so fertilizer or pelletized lime hits the wheels and creates stripes in the yard. I like Scotts fertilizer but won't buy another Scotts spreader.

          Poor wheel design
Used this spreader twice. On its second use the wheel kept falling off. After each row I did I would have to stop and reset the wheel. Terrible product.

I bought this to replace the same model that I've used for about 9 years & wore out the plastic wheels. Although lightly constructed & well-engineered, it must be cared for well by immediate hosing off after use to avoid stubborn spreading products from congealing & impairing the plastic bucket rotor (on inside) & spreader disk (underneath). Doing this will give it several years of life. My old one had a good double spoke bucket rotor, but the new revised model has only a single spoke, which will reduce the feeding action of the rotor to drop product down to the spreader disk: this is a negative "improvement" to the spreader. Also, if you buy this, you want to affix a small adjustable stainless steel clamp to the bucket rotor raised nub because otherwise with extended use this plastic rotor loses any grip & becomes useless, ruining the spreader altogether. Another "improvement" I found very useful was a lid that I affixed to the two metal arms so that the lid can cover the bucket top fully to do 2 things: prevent product dust from flying into your face while operating & to prevent drizzle from entering the bucket if you're trying to apply immediately ahead of a shower. (A large plastic tub cover works well for this.) Scotts should make the cover a standard feature. Despite all these remarks, I found this spreader to be superior to all others in it's price range, so I would recommend it with the above cautions.

I picked this Scotts spreader because it appeared to have a superior mechanism for controlling the flow of fertilizer compared to ones that I had owned previously. Controlling the flow had been a problem with my earlier spreaders - one used a wing nut to tighten a clamp that limited the play of the lever to open and close the opening, but it kept slipping with use. Another had a twist mechanism to lengthen or shorten the cable controlling the opening, which eventually stretched. This Scotts spreader has what appears to be a fail-safe control mechanism featuring a dial that is connected to robust sliding stop to limit the size of the opening.

I bought this from local store. See pictures to prove my point. Scotts attempted to protect the person's shoes/shins behind by putting a shield on the back of the device where the spinning "fan blade" flings the fertilizer. I've never liked the fact that the grannuals fly back and stain my socks/shoes but accepted that as part of operating a broadcast spreader. Well, the permanent shield (and also the moveable edge shield) create a deflector that then allows roughly 25% of the grannuals to simply fall straight down. This defeats the purpose of a "spreader" and causes much of the fertilizer to fall in a concentrated line right where you are walking. This concentrated line shows up very pronounced in exactly where you walked, and is roughly 8" wide which happens to be the width of the shield no surprise. Yes, this was also Scotts turf builder fertilizer I was trying to spread!! I have removed the edge shield by taking the thing apart and have removed the permanent shield via reciprocating saw, but don't expect the unit to even hold up. Wasted ~$60!!!

I bought this product for the purpose of spreading Scott's fertilizer... Not certain how well the fertilizer will do yet, because I just spread it two days ago, but this spreader is JUNK. I am absolutely shocked that Scott's would let their name be put on it. I bought 1 bag of fertilizer, and before I was half done, the axle had slipped out of the wheel well, and caused the rest of the spreading mechanism to fall apart. I put everything back together to finish the job, but I'll be looking for a quality spreader when it's time to spread next time...

New purchase - have only used once to spread fertilizer. The order from HD.com came promptly, although there was no packing material (pillow packs, etc.) in the box. Just the spreader, loose by itself. First impressions: The spring tension on the control lever is quite strong. My hand was cramping after a few minutes. Had to alternate hands after that. A better design would be helpful. The agitator worked well to keep the fertilizer dropping evenly (better than my old spreader.) The axle / wheel assembly seemed a little rickety - we'll see how it holds up over time. Will hold off on a buy / no buy recommendation until end-of-season.

It sucks. You will have an extremely hard time finding replacement parts. The Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader is very expensive. Mine is missing the mechanism that spins inside the trough to send the seed out of the hole is missing. It looks like the screw vibrated out that holds the mechanism that spins the seed, etc. I put No for recommending this product as it is in almost new condition except for the parts that fell off. I Have Never Been This Disappointed in a Scotts Product before and I will turn 60 this year!

The Turf Builder EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader comes pre-assembled and simply required only cutting two cable ties and removing two plastic stops (they are just in holes on each sides and slide out easily). The handles then pivot up and you need to tighten the two bolts with your hand so they're snug. Very easy! I like that a lot. Setting the flow is easily done, just read the bag/box of material for the proper setting, start walking and when you need to spread product just squeeze the handle to release product to the spinner. When you want to prevent product from being spread to your flower beds , driveway or the street, you'll want to slide the lever to engage the EdgeGuard. Plan your path so that all of those areas are on the right side of the spreader so you can make use of the EdgeGuard. I used it to spread 100lbs of deluxe grass seed. Since it wasn't Scotts grass seed I needed to experiment with the settings and ended up using the setting of 8 which seemed to be right for the job. The hopper held about 20lbs of product without overflowing. For the price it's built fairly well, and as long as it works for a couple seasons, I'd say that would be fine.

                      Happy with decision to buy
I have paid a service for years to place fertilizer and weed killers with failed results. I now use this device to spread the weed and feed products. I haven't seen any results yet on weeds but the grass is greening nicely. I believe I am doing as good as the service I paid for and can always get a different weed killer.

                      It serves it's purpose.
The spreader was one of two in stock, one was used and rusty, the one I bought was damaged. The handle cover was torn and tattered, the spring on the release mechanism was corroded and a little rusty, there were bird droppings all over it but that is pretty normal for the garden area at Home Depot and Lowes.

I like this spreader. The only downside as I see it is that the fertilizer gets stuck to the wheels and then sometimes "drops" it in a bunch and creates a burn spot.

Design Flaw - Material Sticks to Wheels
Been using this spreader for some time and noticed it puts extra material down in lines. I didn't think much about it till my grass was killed in lines. The material being spread can be caught up in the hollow inside of both wheels, resulting in extra material being spread and lines. This becomes highly problematic when putting something down that requires the grass to be damp. Then you get not only lines but clumps of material. This extra material can lead to dead grass. Trying the Scotts Elite

Terrible design- within an hour out of the box- the handle had broken at the joint with the bolts- the way it is designed, no amount of tightening will get the handle to stay firm and allow you to push and use the spreader. Disappointed, thought that Scotts was a reputable brand- but this thing is junk.

Gear drive assembly failed on the second use. Not repairable. This unit replaced a previous Scotts spreader that I had used for many years. The design of the drive/axle flexed when filled with fertilizer causing separation of drive box gears. I do not recommend.

Has worked as promised/expected FOR 15 YEARS!
I have owned and operated this Deluxe Broadcast Spreader for at least 15 years and haven't had ONE problem until today in which the drive wheel axle input tab broke off. I have jockeyed this spreader up and down steps over rough uneven ground and about anything else you can imagine taking care of my lawn. I am COMPLETELY SATISFIED with this purchase. I can tell from the photos sent by unsatisfied users that ALMOST ALL of them haven't done the most basic maintenance that is required such as RINSING THE THING OFF AFTER USING IT. Remember you are most likely spreading caustic materials which, left sticking to the spreader, will over a SHORT PERIOD rust and degrade the spreaders performance. In the photos I see chemical skim, build up around the plastic rotor, unwashed wheels that judging from the looks have never been washed. In short most of your problems have been caused by YOU. TAKE CARE OF YOUR STUFF AND IT WILL ALMOST 100% OF THE TIME DO WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO!

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder DLX Broadcast Spreader and appreciate your feedback. The spreader has one drive wheel, the other wheel free turns and does not engage the gearbox therefore does not turn the rotary plate or agitator. Is the agitator turning when the spreader is pushed forward, if not, the gearbox is broken. Does the shut-off plate open and close when the control lever is squeezed? If not the shut-off plate is broken. Is the rotor plate under the opening turning? Product should drop down and be flung out onto the lawn. If the rotor plate is not turning it will not toss out the product. This could be either the rotor plate roll pin or the gearbox. Try holding the drive wheel or the axle while you spin the rotor plate. If the rotor plate spins freely it is broken. If it will not spin then the gearbox is broken. Why did HD only allow less than 30-day return on this spreader? I used HD credit card for purchase. Is this an error?
