My wife didn’t like the top.
So I cut off the pyramid at the top, flush with the top trim.
I added a flat 3/4”x51/2”x51/2” oak square. She liked that better.

Hi, thanks for your review. To be clear, the wood on this box newel is not pressed wood. The base is made of red oak plywood, which is stronger and more resistant to cracking than solid red oak. The neck is also red oak plywood, while the cap and trim are solid red oak.

These are not solid oak
Posts look good but only major complaint is the main 3 1/2" section is veneered oak. The center is cheap pine and pine doesn't hold fasteners that well. If I would have known the chinese cheapened these posts, I probably wouldn't have bought them.

Hi there. We are sorry this part did not meet your standards, but are happy to hear you are please with the look of your finished project! It is made of unfinished oak and offers the warm appeal of natural wood. It can be primed and stained to your preference.

My newels were painted white and used to replace the smaller ones that were already there. Their addition creates an updated look to my decor.
