No, it will not prevent odor or air from back drafting. The way the material is glued inside the duct and the "cloth" material used make it impossible to self seal regardless of orientation. Even standing on end, the material is so stiff, it stands straight up. If you want to prevent backdraft, this is not the product to get.

Significantly reduced the amount of interior exhaust fan vent flap noise during wind events when installed in roof vents.

Remains open to air flow
Product does not fit into existing ductwork and the vent sock does not close fully constantly letting airflow into the house. I am returning all the ones that I bought.

completely useless. followed the instructions, which were straight forward and uncomplicated, and the back draft damper didn't do a thing. no change at all from prior installation. a complete waste of money.

The fabric is too stiff to change position. It wants to stay fully open all the time and gravity does nothing to it, this isn't better than just putting in normal tubing.

Absolute waste of money! Great Idea but it does nothing for the back draft issue at all.

Works pretty well - be sure to mount as close to the top of, or the end of, the duct (just behind the vent head / cover on the roof or the outside wall). I have installed six of these and only one of them is not preventing 95-100% of the flapping noise from the bathroom exhaust fan. The one exception is more like 75% effective, and I may mount another one back-to-back to see if that does the trick

This product should not be allowed to be sold. It doesn't work. I just hope everyone who buys this tests it before installing it in the ceiling. The material is like a teflon paper - I thought it was like a latex material. But because it's a heavy weight material, there is NO WAY this will seal off backdrafts. DO NOT BUY THIS.

We got so tired of the flapper in the bathroom fan banging away when it was windy. I installed this device right next to the flapper because I could get access to the exhaust vent. I used aluminum duct tape to secure it and the problem went away! No more clanging and banging when it's windy!

Bought two of these to test the "waters" for all of my bathroom exhaust vents which vent to the roof. Good thing I did not purchase more and waste the money as they don't work no matter how soft or hard (20 mph) wind blows. The flapper on my exhaust fan still flaps up and down even with a weight glued to it. The don't stop the backdraft as noted in the description.

Didn't work.
I installed it in a gas dryer vent to stop cold air from entering through the venting system. The product fit well, however it didn't stop the cold air draft coming down the vent and into the dryer. The cloth baffle material wasn't effective. The concept is a good idea, but doesn't work, in fact the baffles on the outside vent cap are just as effective.

Better than built-in / plastic dampers, slightly fragile.
Used these in a bathroom-vent installation instead of the little plastic (junk) flappy-dampers that came with the units. These fit nice and tight inside 4-in flex-duct splices, but the 'cape' is very thin, and easy to puncture or rip. However, once carefully installed, they do their job pretty well. The only short-coming is VERY slow back-drafts will leak through, but harder ones will be stopped. Recommend using these as a backup, not primary back-draft preventer.

great in theory.
It needs a heavier weight to keep it closed when there is a strong breeze. Might have something to do with the fact I have it right at the outer wall. I put more weight on the end and it seemed to help. We'll see.

No more smell on my dry clothes
Put it at the end of my dryer vent outside....mine was right at 4" on the inside however the long metal extender connector pipe that the contractor put in made it not fit so well. I had to cut about an inch off with a hacksaw and tap it in.....buggered up the end but it still works. I think it would work a little better if I did not cut of the end...the yellow cloth is not stuck down now.
