I'm a real estate investor and I live in a very rural area of upstate New York. Finding competent companies to complete the assorted tasks that
arise is difficult so we end up doing most of the work ourselves. I ordered an assortment of sizes of these black pipes to supplement the stock that I keep on hand.
These schedule 40 pipes, (the schedule number denotes the wall thickness which will vary with the outside diameter of the pipe), work well for all residential and commercial gas and air applications. They're also useful for DIY projects like building industrial furniture, shelving etc.
These arrived well package with nicely cut threads, thread protector caps and a light oil coating.
The Plumber’s Choice honors all warranties for one year on all of their products and as with most products Home Depot sells there is a 90 day return policy.

Good product – straight – good threads.
Good value, black pipe is generally the least expensive.
The diameter of the pipe is 0.846 which is .006 over the spec for schedule 40 half inch steel pipe. 0.840 is the spec for the schedule 40 pipe.
The length is 60 1/16 for this pipe
The plastic end caps are nice in that they keep the pipe threads nice and clean before you use them.
Black steel pipe generally is used to carry gas, where Galvanized pipe is generally used to carry water.
Alternative uses of Steel pipe include clamps, furniture, and as tools.
Here we see an alternative use for the pipe as a pipe clamp.

If you don't have the ability to cut and thread your own pipe, then this is a decent choice. The threads are nice and clean with a quick removal of the burr being done. The welds have been cleaned up nicely on the outside and do not have much of an obstruction on the inside. There is a black coating on the pipe to help resist rust, so try to make sure you don't scratch it up too much.
I don't have an actual plumbing need for black pipe---I'm using these for pipe clamps. Large F clamps flex easily and aluminum bar clamps tend to twist and will also flex when a lot of clamping force is needed. Pipe clamps may be heavy and a bit unwieldy, but they are the best choice for when brute strength is needed. With average pipe clamps on these 30" pipes expect to get 25" of clamping room. Two pipes can be put together with a coupling for more length.
I test fitted these pipe with other 3/4 fixtures and everything mated up well.
The description includes water among the uses, but that's generally not a good idea. Stick to galvanized for water uses.

The quality on this pipe is much better than I anticipated. The thickness of the metal pipe is very good for the project I needed the pipe. The manufacturer provided proper thread protection during shipment so I got the pipe in great condition. I am building custom light pole in my back yard and this pipe along with smaller pipe is just what I needed.

The quality on this 1-1/2 inches X 48 inches black steel metal pipe is much better than I expected. I like how they provided proper protection on the threads, so the pipe arrived with the threads still in great condition. The thickness of the metal pipe is very good for the project I needed the pipe. It works great with using the pipe around the house such as adding extra leverage to the bar breaker when loosening bolts and nuts or when needed to bend metals and other small pipes.

Not everybody uses a pipe for the same reason. I'm getting a lot older and my strength is getting weaker by the day. So, I have to cheat now and then to get by. So, I got a cheater pipe to help me with my pumping work that I have to do every spring and fall. Hook up my outside pump. I can only use it in the summer, the winter is to cold and it would freezes.

I don't have many dealings with pipes, but one of the gas fittings in our shop started leaking so we replaced the fitting and the pipe with a new one and this pipe fit the bill perfectly. It is threaded on both ends and is an 1 1/4" in diameter and 48" long. I only gave it a 4 star review because the pipe seems to be cast somewhat badly on none side, there seems to be some metal slag that ran down the side of the pipe as it was being made. I don't believe this has damaged the integrity of the pipe and we have had no problems thus far. It is also coated in some kind of finish that is to prevent corrosion and buildup.

This black steel pipe is perfect for running a natural gas line connection. It comes with a protective coating to limit any surface rust which has a similar look to boiled linseed oil, and looks good for someone considering using this for furniture or other decorative purposes. My piece had a section where this coating was rubbed off due to contact with other pipes, so if cosmetics are important you may want to pick through and select the best looking pieces for your project. The end threads are cut smoothly and accurately with a nice taper and comes with plastic caps in order to protect the threads during transport and storage. There is a slightly noticeable seam along the length of the pipe that protrudes into the pipe. This pipe does not state the country of origin. Also, the length runs true and other pieces seem to have the same amount of cut threads.
Most Home Depot stores have a cutting and threading machine and an employee will cut this down and re-thread it for you if you need a custom size ( it only takes a few minutes, and I have never been charged for this service, but you might want to ask beforehand ). I am sure they will also do this for you if you buy it online and bring it in with your receipt.

As a woodworker you would know there is no such thing as enough clamps, when I saw this package on line as Five ½ inch, 24 inch long pipes, my mind went straight to 5 two foot long Pipe clamps! A length of clamps I can never seem to have enough of. For those who might not know what a pipe clamp is, you buy a set of clamps that screw onto a steel pipe, most common ½ inch or ¾ inch. That pipe can be almost any size in length, which is why these are popular clamps for wood working. Well got my order today, for some reason only got one pipe instead of 5, but the bigger problem is they are not sized like the pipes you find in store at Home Depot. It appears that these pipe are measured by the exterior size instead of the interior size like their other pipes. Needless to say these pipes were worthless to me. Getting past that, they are light weight, smooth sided and appear to be well threaded. Might be very useful for other things. Exterior diameter measures out to be 1/2 inch.

I use steel pipe for more than plumbing. I use this pipe as a versatile project material. It is easy to cut with a band-saw, and with my lathe and milling machine this pipe can be reshaped in any way that I need. After machining the finish is excellent. I have had no problems welding the pipe either. I always keep various sizes of pipe at hand and find myself using it for projects several times a year.

I needed an extra piece of pipe for multiple things, but mainly for use with a wrench to provide additional leverage while trying to loosen hard stuck nuts and bolts. This pipe is strong and threaded on both ends and protected by end caps. The 1.5” diameter allows for most all wrenches to be used in this pipe, if you use it like I do for additional leverage.

Very well made steel pipes with additional coating of anti-corrosion material to reduce rusting effects. The tapered NPT (National Pipe Thread) enables a good, solid and secure connection from the MIP (Male Iron Pipe) to the FIP (Female Iron Pipe) without the need to use any sealant material which may interfere with the pipes contents, mostly gases or liquids. Looking through the pipe I can see a weld line and it looks like a very fine weld to me. The dimensions of the pipes are half inch outer diameter and three eighths inch internal diameter.

While this pipe can have many different uses, I use it mainly for a cheater bar on a crescent style wrench to provide additional leverage when turning a tight nut/bolt. The 1/4” x 18” steel pipe is threaded on each end and is strong.
Other potential uses include a paper towel holder, plumbing, and furniture applications. This seems like a quality product.

I chose this pipe to use as a bar for me to do pullups at the Billco exit from the basement of my house. At 4 feet it fits perfectly across the foundation. It does not require any attachment. It can be lifted and moved if necessary.

Meh
I got two pieces, one was fine.
The other? Had weird black smudge on it, some rust around the threads, and looked clearly dented at the end of the thread.
At first I wondered if the delivery person just threw it in the ground, and that's how it dented. However, with the smudge (similar to thick, sticker goo), the rust, and not having as much of the greasy coating I'm guessing it was actually a returned item.

I returned this as pipe threads were damaged. There is usually a plastic cap put on to protect threads. This did not have them. Deli ery was also delayed here.

Needed this pipe to install a Starlink satellite system. The closest HD is over 100 miles away and shipping on a 10 foot pipe was not going to happen.
