When I replaced my old swing in basement windows a few years back I built the window wells out of treated 4" X 4" 's Just recently I discovered these Polycarbonate Window Well Covers on the Home Depot Website that were sized close enough to meet my needs. I got two. I like how they are made using polycarbonate material and aluminum braces. I also like the mounting system. The well covers were easy enough to trim to fit my wells. You need to drill your own holes in the polycarbonate for the mounting system but that's okay since it enables you to adjust to your wells and your house. It actually made the mounting process a lot easier for me. The directions are tightly printed on one sheet of paper but are easy enough to follow. Not a bad setup.

Thick and strong piece of polycarbonate, and much better than the flimsy piece of plastic usually sold. Middle metal support is nice since this is a large piece covering my main egress window well. It's clear which allows more light than the typical frosted type. Has multiple anchors you can use to lock cover from inside. Well worth the money.

a lot of work
Still a LOT of work
Especially the need for a hammer drill for concrete braces..either have to rent one, borrow or buyone .. or take an hour per hole....4 holes...
will not use cotter pins to secure. ..a person tring to get out probably would panic trying to release 4 of them

Overpriced
I was disappointed in the quality of this product. It was basically a piece of polycarbonate with a few pieces of aluminum riveted on. Easy to manufacture yourself for under $30 which is what I intend to do. If you have the skill to install this, you could easily make it yourself.

High Quality and did the job very well !
This unit was used on a concrete window well over 100 years old but required very little modification. Because of how the house and window well were configured, I decided to join the cover to the house through siding at about 15 degrees so water would run away from the house. I also used a pair of small brass hinges for the attachment. This way I just lift the cover up for any cleaning of the well from leaves, etc. I also put a small latch in the center of the aluminum frame to hold the cover open during cleaning. Everything has worked out great! Unit was a little expensive but in this case I got what I paid for.

What I Was Looking For
Shipped to my door quickly, no damage to packaging. You must drill your own mounting holes but this is to account for all the slight variations of installed well frames. I'm not a fan of the latch system so I modified it and used my old clips. Bottom line it's what I was looking for to replace the previous covers which were less sturdy and worn out.

Just What I Needed
This is a very heavy duty window well cover that I purchased as a replacement for a very flimsy one that cracked when I inadvertently stepped on it when it was covered with snow. While I haven't tried to bear my 110 pound weight on this one, I believe that it could easily stand up to it.

Decent window well covers
Decent product but I wouldn't trust anyone weighing 250 to walk on them. I installed them at an angle to promote run-off and get some air circulation at the sides. Made supports out of 2X6" cedar boards braced with 6in lengths of PT balusters attached with stainless L brackets. Just set the back edge of the cover on the board. Also used strips of white vinyl interior trim attached with construction adhesive to camouflage the bright aluminum support pieces because they looked weird with our old house. Had to make cuts in one to allow for AC lines. The aluminum was tough to cut but the plastic cut easily with a jigsaw. They're a vast improvement over the flimsy pieces of corrugated plastic that my husband used for covers, that I fell through once and the grandkids fell through twice.

Nice product but very poor installation instructions
The directions for installation were essentially unintelligible to this non-engineer. I fortunately had no need for it to swing open, so I just screwed it to the house which worked fine. There is no way I could have figured out how to install it to swing open with the directions which were provided. The product itself seems adequate for the purpose.

As Expected
These were exactly what I expected to receive. I'm happy with the end result: They block small animals from getting in (frog, mice, etc), They let light through, and they'll stop my daughter from falling in.
I'm not so sure about holding 250lbs - they just seem too thin - and I don't plan to test it.
They do take quite a bit of work to install to make them look like they are part of the window well (unless your well is shaped exactly like these covers out of the box).
For the price, you can't go wrong. To get custom covers or stronger covers (with a full grate underneath) you're going to spend a ton more.

Covers our window well opening for less money
Previous covers I found for our size window well was in the hundreds of dollars. While I have never found a cover that truely fits our window wells, this one works well.

Window Well cover works very well!
This product is just as described: a strong, weather shield to keep the elements out of your window wells. I also like the 'pull pin' system for the egress window ... one change (suggestion for Mfr): I am adding bright flags to the egress window pull pins so they are visible in smoke and easier to reach for 'smaller' people in emergencies.

Window well cover
Was not aware when buying the cover that it attaches to the outside of the well rather than the wall of the house. The cover cannot be attached to the well if you live in an old house (ours is circa 1938) if the perimeter of the well is brick. We have the cover just sitting on the well which is not ideal. Seems strong and would work well on a newer home. Expensive for what it is.

Not overly impressed
It's much more of an installation project than I was expecting.
Advertised to support 250 lbs, and does seem relatively strong, but I won't be testing that by standing on it. The bracing is all thin aluminum.
It's best attribute is that it locks from the inside which makes it a lot harder for someone to get into your house through a escape-size window well. Really needs a 4th bracket for this size of a window well (41x24) though.
For the price paid, somewhat disappointed. Would recommend only with caveats.
