Customer Reviews for Wayne 1/2 HP Cast Iron Sump Pump with Vertical Float Switch

How does the song go, "seems it never rains in Southern California, but girl, let me warn ya, it pours, man it pours”. We can get a lot of rain when the storms roll through, and some of it was beginning to flood our backyard and patio. Did a lot of research on the best pump, and liked the construction details, production tests, and warranty for this pump. Using it for our backyard drainage, it didn’t need to be the largest, and it has proven itself to be perfect for my intended usage. I installed a collection box at what was the lowest part of our yard (also from Home Depot, U.S. TRENCH DRAIN 18”x14” Storm Water Pit and Catch Basin for Modular Trench and Channel Drain Systems with Aluminum Grate), an Everbuilt Sump Pump check valve, and then ran 1 1/2” ABS out to an ABS drain line under our driveway, and continued that run down slope to off the curb. Anchored this box deep down with 10” lag screws through the box sides sideways to eliminate potential for the box to be floated by water. Placed the pump inside, where fit and room was perfect. As stated, this pump works perfectly for its intended use. Rain water runoff accumulates quickly in the box, the float rises as it fills and in less than 2 seconds the box is emptied. Over and over and over. I have stood in the rain and watched it repeat this action effortlessly as the rain pours down. It’s a pleasure to watch a project succeed in its purpose, and have a dry patio. I have the pump plugged into a waterproof passthrough into the house, with a portable GFCI at the outlet. The pump is quiet, efficient, feels very well built, is solid, and has good heft. The most I have heard is a low hum when it activates. It has given us a lot of peace of mind now knowing that we won’t wake to a flooded patio when it rains heavily overnight. I realize we have only started the rainy season as of this writing, but right now I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Wouldn't recommend Wayne pumps if you want one to last more than a couple of years. Installed one of their 1/3 hp pedestal sump pumps a few years ago in my mothers basement. It lasted about 2 years before the shaft rusted to the cast iron and it stopped working. Replaced it with another brand and threw the Wayne off to the side until a few days ago when I brought what was left of it home so I could at least harvest the motor off of it and throw the rust pile away. Total JUNK!

It's hard to rate something that you will depend on for long term durability when just installing it. Just 4 stars for that reason. However, it was easy to install and is extremely quiet.

My previously installed Wayne sump pump was still functioning ok but, not being sure how old it was, I decided to replace it a month ago for peace of mind reasons. The choice as to what to replace it with was easy to make - the same thing. I have about a ten foot lift to get the water out of the basement. The pumping power of this pump is more than adequate. I like the quality of cast iron construction. The vertical float switch design allows it to fit well into my sump pit and the float "guard" ensures that the pump cannot get close enough to the wall to interfere with the float. It is also very quiet. A great quality product. More than meets expectations.

I have a low spot in my yard that ponds during heavy rain. I researched putting in a sump pump by watching on-line videos. I installed a 6" catch basin in the area and plumbed it to a Home Depot bucket, buried a few feet away, with 4" PVC pipe. The bucket was buried a few inches below the surface. I increased the height of the bucket by cutting off the bottom 4" of another bucket, and placing the top into my buried bucket. The buckets were attached to each other with screws. I bought the Wayne 1/3 HP Sump Pump and a check valve on line from Home Depot. I wanted a pump with a vertical float switch. I had earlier purchased another pump (not from Home Depot) with a tether float and couldn't get the float to work properly. It had to fit in my bucket sump. Wayne products had good reviews and appeared easy to install. Both items arrived quickly and were well packaged. The instructions were easy to read and understand. I purchased a few fittings and connected the check valve to the pump. I placed the pump into my bucket sump and then plumbed 1 1/4" pipe from it to a v-ditch on the side of my yard. I capped the sump bucket with a bucket lid. This set up worked great during a test. It is very quiet. The real test came with the heavy rains we received the past week. It has continued to work flawlessly.

Less than one month after receiving and installing this pump is too early to rate this but HD insists. It arrived on time, looks well built and was easy to install. Whether it will last and perform well only time will tell. It is American made.

I've had three other sump pumps prior to this one. One of them was guaranteed for life, but various parts failed on it such that I replaced it three times in three years prior to its latest failure. I selected this pump based on the reviews and had it shipped overnight because my basement was getting very wet with a failed sump pump. It was tempting to go with something in stock that I could just go pick up, but the reviews on those available were mixed. The quality appears to be very good and installation was easy. The float switch works very well and has a perfect length of travel even in my fairly shallow sump pit. The issues I read about do not seem to be major compared to the other types of failures that I've had. For example, if the float rod rusts out it will be easily replaceable with a rod made of better material. I had been worried about noise based on one of the reviews, but this pump is not very loud. I have it in an unfinished basement with no insulation between the first floor joists and do not really hear it on the first floor. It is almost as quiet as my 12V backup sump pump and no where near as loud as a previous pedestal pump I had that made all sorts of noise. It is much much quieter than my oil furnace that is nearby that runs more often. I will provide an update in the future if I have some sort of failure or in a few years if it is still working well.

As the title says, this pump has been working in my house for 9 years, and is as good as the day I installed it. It is quiet and efficient. No problem ever. Nothing more I need to say. For complete peace of mind, I’m going to buy a new one and install it today.

Works great, quiet, delivered quickly

Easy to install and is working fine for me and several of my neighbors who replaced old pumps. The pump is quiet and a bit stronger than our old pumps. We'll see how long they last!

This pump was ready to go and has been doing it's job.

I've had one of these for the past 8 years - never had a problem. Due to its age, my wife convinced me to replace it proactively, so I bought another one of the same model. I'm keeping the old one as a backup, as it shows no sign of failing. Great, solid unit, very quiet and powerful.

Pump stopped working after 14 hrs. of service. Cut-off switch ceased work then motor froze. No help at Home Depot except after you gives $193.00 we can send a new pump.

Replacing a 20+ year old RIDGID that worked great until it didn’t..the Wayne pump was available the next day.Pumps water as I expected it would and is much quieter than the old pump. It’s been installed for a couple of months so ask me in a few years for a product rating..so far so good.

The last one I bought failed after appx 18 months. If this one doesn't last longer I won't buy another Wayne.
