So far our experience with carpet ordering and installation is taking well over 3 weeks! When it came to installation (Home Depot uses 3rd Party installer and Home Depot does not have control or guarantee what happens here.) they double booked and had to be re-scheduled. How convenient for them but not so convenient for us.
Installation is not done yet...stay tuned how this all turns out!

My project requires 105 boxes of Pergo laminated flooring which no single home depot has enough quantity. There is not enough time to special order. The helpful salesperson from Fremont broke the order into 4 batches (40+25+10+30) for Oakland, Hayward, San Leandro, and Emeryville store pick up. I prepaid everything. The order distribution is based on each store's online self reported inventory. We make sure each store has sufficient quantity and in fact leave a few out for margin (e.g. Only order 40 when there are 45 or more).
All stores confirmed merchandise ready for pick up in two business days through a standard email. As it turned out, the Hayward store only has 22 on hand so it adjusted the order down from 25 to 22. But other than the number changed, there is nothing mentioned or highlighted in the email the order quantity is adjusted down. This is mistake #1 as a customer can easily overlook the quantity has changed in the email. They might notice only at pick up time which could be too late.
When I arrived at the Hayward service desk, the clerk notices a refund is marked but has no idea what it is about. I asked could it be the rebate credit for my Home Depot Pro account. She thought so and rang up the register to refund 3 boxes worth of money. But at the time, neither she or I have noticed that the refund is because the quantity is changed from 25 to 22. That is mistake #2 as the system is so cryptic (and the employees are not trained to compensate for it) that even the employees do not understand what the refund is for.
The store was very prompt in wheeling out my 22 boxes of Pergo laminated flooring on a big orange cart. Now the paperwork seem to be in order, I was ready to go. Then I notice one of the box was opened and defective. But the opened box was hidden one layer below so I notice it before loading only by luck. This is mistake #3. If the clerk load an open defective box (because it is the last box), the clerk should put it on top and clearly communicate it to other clerks and the customer. Let the customer decide whether to accept it.
I talked to the service desk which is at this time managed by two young ladies in their late 10's or early 20's. They look like interns to me. Unfortunately they have no idea what to do. One suggests I get a replacement box on my own. But I have no idea where is it stored so I asked them to get help. They got on the phone paging service but nobody came to help. Actually a couple other employees came by casually find out what is going on. But none of them help. My sense is that it was not their department. This is mistake #4. If your interns are not trained, then have good people back them up.
As it turned out, I have perishable good (a fresh fish) in my SUV. I cannot afford wasting more time in the store. So I asked to speak to the manager. The manager (actually Assistant Manager) did show up promptly in less than two minutes. I explained to him the problem and he quickly checked the inventory and informed me there is no more in the store. He apologized for my inconvenience and expressed appreciation for my business. He was not rude or anything like that. But the way he says it sound scripted instead of from the heart.
All in all, I do not feel the employees for this store are committed for great customer services. This is in contrast to the employee I met in Fremont store. She went out of her way trying to figure out how to get my order in. When the online system does not allow her to input my Home Depot Pro discount code, she checked with her supervisor and figured out alternative way. She gave me her business card and invite me to call her if I run into problem getting the discount.
