A:  i'm guessing you could rip it on a table saw or send it through a planer very easily, although they sell a 4x6 so not sure why you'd really want to. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Boise-Cascade-3-1-2-in-x-5-1-4-in-x-8-ft-VERSA-LAM-Column-WPHD-WP11011/206565337

A:  No the manufacturer states you cannot wrap them as moisture will build up damage the wood and void the warranty . They would also be susceptible to insect damage as they are not treated. http://www.bc.com/content/uploads/bc-resources/GE-4-Exterior-Exposure.pdf

A:  Versa-Lam columns are used for interior applications for structural support. They do not have any weather resistant treatment applied to them. If used in an exterior application, this would void any warranty of the product.

        Answer This Question

A:  You could put a pvc/composite sleeve over this Versa-Lam lumber for appearances but you would have to check with your local building authority and/or an architect to determine if that size Versa-Lam has the capacity to support the porch roof.

A:  If you are in a pinch and if you ran the grain vertically I don't see why not... but bc has a specific product for spans. I would just just use the correct product if you have time to source.
