Q:What does one yellow light, neutral contact not connected mean?
by|Aug 8, 2020
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello! This means that the white wire, which is the neutral, is loose or disconnected from the outlet that was tested. It could also be that the neutral is disconnected somewhere between that outlet and another outlet that that feeds it. Hope this helps.

Q:Replaced a two prong outlet in an old bathroom to bring up to code. It was wired with pigtails. The new GFCI that I installed then tested correctly. In a different circuit I replaced the two prong outlet at the end of the run with a GFCI. It tested as open ground and when I pushed the red button the ground fault did not trip. Any thoughts?

Answer This Question

A:  To add, this will only show a circuit grounded if its grounded back to the panel or a copper pipe, in my experience. So if that circuit is just ground to the box, this tester will show it open ground.

A:  My guess is that circuit is old and not grounded. At a minimum you can ground it to the box, assuming its steel.

A:  How many wires did your old two prong outlet have? How did you wire the wires to your new GFCI outlet? All GFCI outlets should have one live, one neutral and one ground from the breaker box or the electric wiring system. Where is your ground wire coming from?

A:  Yes Joe, home use is fine. I bought it strictly for home use.

A:  It makes no difference. It will work exactly the same in a residential or commercial environment.

A:  No, it doesn't matter. It is a 3 wires receptacle tester. It makes sure that the testing receptacle is safe for use or wired correctly.

        by|May 5, 2023

A:  The product description states: "Detects common wiring problems in standard receptacles." There is no limitation stated that the receptacles should be "residential", because there are nonesuch, but you would need a GFCI capable tester for any GFCI receptacles, which abound in modern residential construction. The manufacturer name: "Commercial Electric", appears to be more for marketing than as a limitation on use, implying that it is suitable for commercial use. That said, there is no reason one should limit tool selection to those limited to residential use as that would imply limitation to infrequent and light duty use. Also, other Q&A suggest there are some issues with this device which would best place this tool in the hands of an experienced operator.

A:  Dear valued customer, the tester has capacitor module, once the device pulled out from the outlet, a tiny little current will stay over at the device, then to dim away. Therefore, the tester works properly and the tiny little current will not affect and cause injury. Please let us know if you have questions in further.

Q:I have plugged this product into several outlets in our house and in two different rooms, regardless of which outlet, results in a breaker being tripped? Any ideas as to why this would be happening? One example: all the power was on in my bedroom, unplugged a lamp from the outlet, then plugged this product into the same outlet and it again resulted in a tripped breaker. Thanks in advance.

A:  Dear Customer, while 3 lights came on, there would be consider as two possibility result: 1: The outlet was wired without ground wire on a 220V outlet. 2: Either ground or hot wire was connected incorrectly. Per technician recommendation, please check the voltage of ground or hot wire. Thank you and we will look forward for your further questions.
