Q:How much force can say a 9 inch length of this take before it starts to fail, in tons or PSI? I'm looking to fabricate a small tabletop hydraulic press with 4x9" lengths of this, 2 on bottom and 2 on top, all parallel, with 4x24" 1/2" or 5/8" threaded rods secured with washers and nuts connecting the top to bottom pieces and some pieces of steel as cross members holding them together, using a 6-ton bottle jack.

A: I think you can order it 48", maybe 60". It's very simple to weld , use a 100 grit sanding disk remove all the mil scale clamp both pieces to a very flat surface, leave 1/8" space for the weld to fill up, tack it in 4 places & weld 1" long welds jumping from tack to tack , grind all of your stops before adding the next 1" weld ( check for straightness every time you are stopping

A: I say no but they do have rental equipment that could do the job. I know they cut wood pieces but I have not seen anything that would cut steel. Call your local store, who knows, they may do what you are asking.
