Q:How do you get the screw in the front hole of the bracket or do you just need one screw

A: There is a keyhole under the top support. Set your screw in it and tighten enough so the bracket will drop in behind it when you slide it down. Then drive a final screw in under the lower support.

Q:How many of these would I need for a 72 inch long shelf? 48” long shelf? Both 12 inches deep?

A: Depends upon the weight of what you are going to hang on it. I would go with 2 for the 48” shelf, and 3 to 4 for the 72” one. Again it depends on the weight. Better to screw them into a stud than into sheet rock
