Q:Planning to mount these on a timber retaining wall. Any suggestions on how large to drill the hole for the wires?

Answer This Question

A:  New model can be as small as a 1/2", just enough to get the wires through. The older model is at the very least 1-1/4".

A:  This connects to a supply. Review the picture to see.

    by|May 4, 2023

A:  the hole size depends on the gauge power supply wire you are using. When you decide on that just use the next size up drill bit. just keep in mind the connectors on the back of this light do not come off so you may need to measure them for the right size hole

A:  Hi Alicia Yes I would use a stainless screw some where around 3/4" to 1" long would be sufficient. Hampton bay does include a template that matches the mounting holes along with screws. I just don't remember if they were stainless. Remember most of the treated wood will eat standard non stainless screws after a few years especially is there is moist or ocean air present. I am positive the dimensions between the holes was one and a quarter inch, center to center of screws. For the wires I would use a minimum 1/2 inch bit up to 3/4" since you will most likely have two wires going through each hole for wiring if you loop the wire connections in the light other wise a 1/2' hole should be more than fine for one wire. The actual wire size from the light is a 18 gauge wire. So, if you are making the connections in the back of the mounting or behind the timber you would be fine with a 1/2' hole at the smallest as you have to allow room for the clips. Again 5/8" hole or even a 3/4 inch hole would be easier to feed the deck light clips through the timber. Hope that helps.

A:  clear out the earth behind and use a 9" x 1 1/8" drill bit.

A:  This runs off a twelve volt,DC transformer. Like Malibu or similar. Most of them can have a light sensor added so you can automate the lights

A:  I put 9 of these on a 300 watt transformer 12V power supply and set them to turn on each night at dusk (photocell triggered). The internal clock in the transformer allows me to turn them off either at dawn or a specific clock time. Working beautifully so far.

A:  I hooked all of them up to the transformer and then I plug the transformer into the GE Z-Wave Wireless Smart Lighting Control Outdoor Module, which works with my Samsung Smartthings system and Alexa. I can control all my low voltage lights in my backyard with my phone and through Alexa. I have coordinated zwave motion sensors that are part of the Smartthings system to trip the lights when they sense motion between certain hours.

A:  You could easily hook up a dusk to dawn sensor to the power transformer or even just a simple holiday exterior light timer. Both of these items could be purchased at Home Depot, light sensors in the electrical aisle. The holiday light sensors turn on at dusk and give you the option to setting how long the lights stay on in increments of one to 8 hours. Remember these lights only work off a 12 volt transformer that is made for land scape lights.

A:  The dusk to dawn setting is built into the low voltage transformer unit. either manual on, dusk to dawn, off, or based on timer. if you could find a low voltage motion sensor i suppose you could wire in a motion sensor as well (as long as voltage is flowing through the transformer to the wires).

A:  A 12v. Transformer must be aquired separately.

            by|May 4, 2023

A:  I have never seen these particular lights in a kit . Only seen them for sale as separate items. You can easily add the lights to any 12 twelve volt landscape light system.

            by|May 4, 2023

            A:  They don't come with a transformer.

            by|May 4, 2023

A:  You purchase the transformer separately. Get a good quality one as getting a cheap one will reduce your lighting experience by flickering and early transformer replacement.

A:  It is a pity that the fixture cannot be dimmed.

                by|May 4, 2023

A:  Yes, some transformers have a hi and low setting for light output. You could also install a potentiometer to adjust down the voltage but I have never seen any in a waterproof system as landscape lights are exposed to weather, rain and also sprinklers. You can also use glass paints to color or paint the bulb. Most glass paints are transparent.

A:  I'd say about 8 ft wide and 5 ft out from your garage. It's bright enough, but not even close to flood light bright.

A:  At two foot high there is approximately a 5 to 6 foot spread. As the height increases there will not be a hot spot but should spread at least 15 foot with a nice glow of light.

A:  Make sure you use a dimmer designed for low voltage LED or it will flicker if it works at all.

                        by|May 4, 2023

A:  It IS possible to dim low voltage LED lights. However, it can be tricky and somewhat expensive if you go with a commercial light dimming product. You must know what type of low voltage transformer you have; magnetic or electronic, and purchase the correct dimmer in accordance with your type of transformer. I found a much simpler solution. Window tint! Your local Home Depot store will likely stock sheets of window tint, or you can purchase "light dimming sheets" from your favorite online retailer.

Q:I plan to put the lights on the stairs of my back deck (6 steps, then landing, turn direction, then 9 more steps). It is very dark. I need to use a flashlight now to see to go down the steps at night. Do I need to have a light on every stop or would it be sufficient to have one every other step? I would like to know how far each fixture casts it's light. Thank you!

A:  These are quite bright. Mounted about 30 inches above the steps, they should light at least four steps each. Mounted on the stair risers, you should consider one per step, as the stair tread will shadow the steps below.

A:  Do you need to connect to direct electrical outlet?

                          by|May 5, 2023

A:  In my application, I mounted two of these lights on a single 4" stone step on our patio, and four lights on the grill island about 30" from the ground, two in the front of the island near each end, and one in the middle of each end panel. The lights throw much more than the 20w halogen bulb fixtures that were previously used. I think mounting one on every step would be excessive, but it might depend upon where the stair rail posts are mounted (i.e., at the outer edge of the step? in the middle of the step?). If you can, I'd recommend that you clamp or temporarily mount a few lights on every other step, connect them to your supply wire, then see what they look like after dark. This way, you can play with the design before you permanently mount the fixtures. Good luck!

A:  IT is tough on stairs because there will always be a gap in lighting to do every other step. However, I think this is better than doing every step as then you have too much of a light show going on. If your step landing is longer than a normal staircase, you might be OK to do every step. Now let me tell you that the original design of this fixture requires that you drill a 1 in. hole through the base plate to mount the light. This is because the connector is 1 in. wide. They have redesigned the wiring with a pin connector which you can separate such that now you only have to drill a 3/8 in. hole. But they are sold under the same SKU so good luck running from HD to HD to find the new design. If HD really cared about quality and their customers, they would have pulled the old design off the shelves. But they would rather you destroy your deck with 1 in. holes or drive all over looking for the new design than do the right thing...

A:  Not to my knowledge. This was the only one like it that I found from this manufacturer (Hampton Bay). I will say that it throws more than an adequate light ( 20 watt equivalent LED) - much better than our previous incandescent fixtures.
