Q:Would these work to put a clothes line posts on my deck?

    Answer This Question

A:  Depends. Will you have a beam between the top of the post to support the horizontal loads on the post? If not I don’t think these are a good option. These are designed for location and vertical support, deck rails have top and bottom beams between the post.  Used as intended these are expensive and worth every penny. We are super pleased with the finished installed results.

A:  Hello, Many customers have used these for free standing posts for lighting and close lines, however they are intended for use with structures such as pergolas and pavilions. For weight load limits you can access engineering documents here: https://ozcobp.com/product/4x4-post-base-ls/#tab-testing. The F1 and F2 categories are referring to forces such as perpendicular and twisting weight tolerances are around 1100 lbs. for this item. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:Would these be strong enough to mount a 4x4x8 vertically without lateral movement? I want to string patio lights between 2 vertical 4x4 upright posts, but I'm concerned the posts wouldn't stay level or tend to lean toward each other

A:  It’s a heavy duty piece, and it will hold your piece of wood for stringing lights, but it does have some minor movement tho… I used mine for making a railing on my porch

A:  Absolutely when mounted ion concrete or deck. The bottom piece is bolted down and the side pieces are then attached. Looks elegant on wooden post.

A:  Interesting question. The purpose of these post base’s is hold the bottom of the post in position, but, the design is for the top of the post to also be held in position by the top of the deck railing. So the base is not really intended to support a post alone.   Now you have 2 screws on all 4 sides to keep the sideplates tight to the post. The side plates attach to the base the post sits on keeping it on location. Would it they support a string of lights? I think so. Would it stay straight up if someone leans on it? I doubt it, it won’t fall over but the top of the post would move a bit.  To support a solid railing the base has a hole in the center for a 1/2” fastener to attach it thru the deck boards to 4x4 or 4x6 blocking between the deck joint to be rock solid.  Look on YouTube, I think you will find a better solution to support the light strings. As far as the product itself, love it. They look great, are steel so they are durable, well worth the cost to use as intended.

A:  Hello, If you go to this link: https://ozcobp.com/product/4x4-post-base-ls/#tab-testing, you will find engineering and spec reports for our 4"x4" Laredo Sunset Post Base. Without knowing surface quality and timber quality we are unable to say that it will work 100%. With the weight limits as high as they are it should be ok, but you will ultimately have to determine that for yourself. There typically isn't a lot of movement on the posts once installed with a post base and most likely will not lean unless the timber starts to bend. If you have further inquires, please call Hillman customer service and speak with OZCO technical support. Thank you for your inquiry!

A:  I did this exact same thing and the posts leaned. The brackets didn't budge, but the weight of the lights and cable actually bent the posts as the pressure treatment dried out. My posts were 4X4X5. I'm sure 8' posts would be even worse.

A:  Yes that’s what we used them for. We put deck railings around two decks using them. You can adjust them to be straight and they are very sturdy. We had a lot of concerns when we saw these so we bought on and tried it. It was perfect.  Strongly recommend these

A:  It's definitely more shiny than matte. I'd call it a satin finish if I had to pick a word.

                        by|Oct 25, 2020

A:  It is not a shiny finish nor a matte finish, but in between. I would say it would be a stain finish. Not sure if it can be painted; left it original and worked out great for the base of a handrail post.

A:  Each box has a bottom plate, two side pieces and the hardware for installation of one post. It is very secure, looks great with my home (post and beam with Other black rod iron accents). It is also easy to install and level. Good Luck. I think you will be happy with the look, we are.We installed them along our loft, so we didn’t have to mess with our ridge beam, it installed right on the floor. MargaretAnn

A:  its been awhile since I purchased these, I purchase 3, 4 in x 4 in and 8, 6 in x 6 in, I built a large L shaped pergola (20 ft by 20 ft) at one end of my pool. The lumber beams were 2"x12"x20' the cross beams were 2" x10"x20' I then did a sun shade with 1"x4" x 20' on the roof spaced 3.5" apart. I had an existing concrete deck large enough to accept this. I used 4 concrete tapcons (3/8" x 7") per elevated post and 2 for the smaller ones, to hold them/anchor them in place. My columns are 6" x" 6" cut off at 9ft. All of the lumber is pressure treated with galvanized screws/nails,hurricane tie downs, and 1/2" bolts for the columns. I think I purchased them as singles/ not sure...Rick

A:  We used these for an interior rail using 4x4s. We did have to bend the tabs down to secure it, otherwise it wiggled around.

A:  There is no reason why these could not be used for newel posts. They are very sturdy when anchored properly.

A:  Probably not. These are large, intended for 4x4 posts, and have a distinctly “outdoorsy” look, kind of heavy and clunky. Having said all that, they CAN be used indoors if you like the industrial look.

A:  For decorative purposes only you could just mount this to a bottom of a post, sure. But keep in mind the structure would not be secured to any foundation.

A:  It could be used as a stand-alone decorative post foot, but there is no guarantee that your post won’t move. Normally the post foot is attached to a concrete slab or wood deck using concrete anchors or long, big wood screws.

A:  It's for attaching one thing to another, so you wouldn't use this stand alone. If your looking for something decorative there's way cheaper things you can use. This looks good and is structural. Can be used with cement or wood. They work fantastic. I used it to attach a small pergola to a deck over my pond. Screw the base plate in, slide in 4 sides with tabs and screw to 4x4 .Rock solid.

A:  It does not have to be bolted to the ground but that is the purpose of this assembly. A 4x4 post can not stand up on it's own, bolting it to a cement foundation, using this assembly works to keep that post secured and upright!
