A:  You're best product would be Ram Board. This is a heavy cardboard product that comes in roll form. You can secure it in place with removable painters tape. It should be available at Home Depot. If they don't have it in stock they can order it in for you.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. The wax paper underlayment is not recommended for your project needs. You may want to consider a non waxed Builder’s Paper for general floor protection. Thank you for considering this product.

Q:Does this need to be taped? If so, what type of tape is best? I'm installing strand woven bamboo (5" x 36") over old hardwood floor

A:  I stapled it down, overlapping courses by about 2”. I tapped all the staples with a hammer to ensure they were well set and wouldn’t make a squeak. Worked fine. Toughest part is not slipping on the paper if you need to walk on it. Be careful.

A:  I did not tape the seams on mine but I did put a piece of tape here and there just to keep it in place. I really like this product. Just recently was my first time using it very nice.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. No tape needed. Overlap each row of paper by approximately 2-3 inches the help the flooring slide easily across the surface. The occasional staple can be used to secure the wax paper to the subfloor if needed.

                    by|May 5, 2023

A:  Typically it is stapled down but this product is an extremely fragile wax paper and rips easily, I ended up using regular rosin paper as an underlayment. Just my 2 cents. On a side note, why not just refinish the original hardwoods? They will always be nicer than bamboo as long as they aren’t rotted and destroyed. Real hardwoods add more value than what bamboo does, but whatever.

Q:I pulled up carpet, particle board, and rosin paper. Now I have car decking. I want to put this paper, then plywood sheeting, and then glue down engineered bamboo. What do you all think ofthat?

                        Answer This Question

A:  That should work fine as a vapor barrier and solid substrate. Make sure you have the correct spacing for the screws holding down the plywood because glue cannot be applied to the subfloors.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. Your installation project is interesting and is not in line with what the wax paper is designed to be used for but the wax paper would most likely perform. Mechanically fastening the plywood to the decking is a must. Using a quality moisture cured urethane adhesive like the R1509 or R1535 to secure the flooring to the plywood is recommended. Side Note: Research Indicates Car decking is strong however can shrink over time forming gaps and holes due to the "knots" falling out. (something to consider when constructing a subfloor) Any instability can ultimately affect the overall performance of the wood flooring installation.

                            Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. The wax paper is placed between the subfloor and the wood flooring on above grade installations where moisture is not a concern. Having a better understanding of your project needs and the conventional subfloor with plywood added on top would be helpful when making underlayment recommendations.
