Is a great product for the cost

This is a nifty little device. It's not very large and charges off a USB port. Just for fun I tested it to see how accurate it was, it's as accurate than the old tape measure. Nice thing is that for long distances, it's a person job. The only thing I didn't like about it was the instructions, they were basic but after a short time of scrolling through the menu, it's pretty easy to figure out.

It seems to work within the accuracy stated but jeez, it's hard to use. First, as you can see from the picture it's tiny. That's not bad in and of itself but crammed into that tiny package are a tiny screen which I (anyway) can't read without a magnifying glass. If you get a fractional inch in your measurement it appears in microscopic text to the right of the inches digits and solidly in the shadow of the measurer's case. Second, there's no way to fix this thing to a surface, tripod or anything. If you're trying to shoot something in - moving the target until you get it right - reproducing the starting location for the measurer isn't the easiest thing to do. Lastly, and the thing that forced me to not recommend it, is the power cord. It's a standard micro-USB but the shape of the molding around the plug is smaller than a typical phone has. Even if you've got a micro-USB cord it won't fit because the space for the molding is too small. Plus, the charging cord is only 10-inches long.

If all you need is something to measure distances and nothing more, this is the device for you. Easy to use, it is perfect for estimating distances, particularly those over 10 ft, where using a tape measure can be troublesome. I have used it to measure the square footage of the rooms in my home (you have to do the calculations yourself), to set distances from one item to another, etc. It is rated to be accurate to 1/4 in at 40 ft; I have found this to be about correct, but for how I use it that is plenty accurate. It is able to report distances in meters, feet, feet-inches, or inches, although switching between the scales is tricky (it requires a 3 second push on the button, but if you don’t do it right it just goes to measure mode). It charges very quickly (in my case, less than 20 min) and holds a charge for days with normal use. At this items price point it is a nice alternative to a tape measure to have around. Please note that if you try to use it against a non reflective target, like water or glass, you will get anomalous results. This is an issue with all laser devices of this sort. There are some drawbacks; first, it is SMALL. Its size makes it extremely portable (I keep one in my contractors clipboard, if it’s not in my pocket) but its size also makes it extremely easy to misplace or lose. The provided wrist strap helps (you can clip it to your tool bag or box), but I have already misplaced it twice and I have only had it for a week. Second, it is hard to read; the LED display is not backlit so if you are working in dim light it can be very hard to read. Third, there is no memory function, so you need to write your measurements down as soon as you take them (the reading will stay on the screen for about 40 seconds). Other devices of this type will display the last measurement when you push the on button; this one goes right into measuring mode. None of these drawbacks is big enough to not recommend this device; as long as you know what you are getting (a digital tape measure) and it is what you want this device will serve you well.

I particularly like it for aerial interior work were a tape measure can be impractical while laying out lighting and mechanicals. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We recently had to do some commercial renovations to a Hospice office by installing free standing walls in a room that was 40'x60'. It proved to be a challenge to get the grid set up when everyone either had a 16' tape or a roller stick. Until I recieved this little gem. Between the laser distance measurer & the DeWalt cross beam laser level we had the walls up in no time. The only drawback was making sure it was in the correct mode & that the guys that weren't used to the operation kept holding the bottom too long in an attempt to get the measurement. Kinda wish it had some sort of audible tone to let you know when the mode changes. Other than that everyone was glad it was there.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Dewalt 40' laser pocket measure is an extremely dependable tool. For its size, which is tiny, it packs a punch. Sturdy in its design and easy to use with its one button operation. I was worried that it would get turned on in my pocket with all the keys and tools I have at all times. But it passed all my tests and held a single charge for at least two weeks so far, and that's using it daily, plus showing it off to everyone. This is truly a "pocket" laser measurer. It will fit not only in my hand, but in my closed fist. With accuracy to depend on, beating its own claimed (+/- 1/4"). I found it to be dead on when compared to my tape measure at both near and far tests. I love it, and its part of my daily outfit, as I have attached it to my keychain so its always with me. One more thing, if you have a usb port available, it comes with its own micro usb charging cord. Extremely convenient and simple.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I didn't pay attention to the size when I ordered it and was surprised when it came in. After using it for a while it fits nicely in my pocket and isn't to bulky. Makes for a great substitution for carrying around a big tape all the time. I just wish it had a second button to change between measurement styles (I.E. feet, inches, and meters) and taking a measurement but I'll get used to not holding the button as long. All in all it's a win.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The small size of the DW040HD 40ft pocket laser comes in handy. It fits in my front pocket or in my bid portfolio. Measuring a room for sheet rock, the pocket laser matched my 25' tape measurement on a 16'4" wall and a 18'1" wall for accuracy. The Laser did cut down my time measuring room, etc for bids.

Works good, does both metric and feet dimensions. Good price and Quito get reading. Display could be a little larger and more detail with the instructions

Easy to use and I can measure larger things by myself! Also the digital read makes my life so much easier. Only thing I would like it for it to maybe have a case or little travel bag to put it away in.

I really do not remember when I bought this but it is so useful. And when with a client and you need to take a quick measurement pulling this out and using this shows a great amount of professionalism vs struggling with a tape. The only issue I have is seeing the characters from time to time and if it is on M or not. It could have a lighter background. If this is adjustable I dont know. But all in all GREAT PRODUCT

I doesn't work up to 40 feet like it says. in small spaces, especially indoor it works fine. But outdoors a 35 foot wall it won't work, even when the light hits something solid. I needed it for exterior measurements, it didn't work and I had to break out the ol' measuring tape anyway. (It says 99 feet!)

Intuitive and accurate.

Great product, small and easy to use for inside corners of a house or tight spots. Highly recommend only goes up to 40 feet on the dot like it says no more.
