The (very thin) strap ratchets onto the spool, and it's not easy to play out. These DO NOT come with with the strap attached to the ratchet, and it spools onto it to the point where it stuck/jammed. I tried two different approaches on threading the strap through the ratchet mechanism, but was at a job, didn't have time to mess with it and took them back the next day. Used rope instead. Trucker's hitch won't fail you! Poor instructions/pictures. These straps are polyester, not nylon, and will degrade if you live in someplace hot, like AZ, NM, TX, etc. Instructions actually warn of this. "Keep them inside." Well, duh, I keep them in the cab but... I personally WOULD NOT use these for a high value item like a motorcycle. I've only lost one load, and that's because of cheap tie downs. This product is not trustworthy unless you're willing to deal with state troopers who'll cite you for losing a load, then deal with having to clean it up! I DO NOT recommend this product. Made in Cheapo China, but then, what else is new, eh?

These are great ratchet tie downs. I purchased them on a whim because I needed to move a very large and heavy executive desk. Id highly recommend these over the keeper straps that are found in store. Simply because they just work a lot smoother. For some reason the keeper straps are very hard to release. That may not sound like a big deal, but it really does become a huge headache. These straps have a rating of 770 lbs if I am not mistaken, with 16 feet of webbing. Plenty of strength for the average load and there are stronger straps produced under the HDX brand. Home depot really won with these as they are cheaper than the keeper straps and they work better. Once they are tightened down they are no coming loose until you release them. The webbing is thin but strong. I moved a 500 pound desk down the freeway and lots of city streets with my tail gate open. One of these straps was the only thing keeping that desk from sliding back and flying off the truck and the thing never budged. A lot of people tend to pass up store brands. I use to be one of those people, but I would highly recommend purchasing these over the Keeper brand.

      Great for moving
The length is great for anchoring inside of Pods. These are sturdy high quality tie downs. If you pay attention to the packaging and dont get knife happy you can store them in the nice hanging rack they come in, when you not using them. The package has tabs that slide out and open up for easy removal and replacement.

        They cut themselves
Lost one of these on the highway (apologies to whoever found it!) because there are sharp edges on the mechanisms that cut the straps: I could tell because one of the others got cut only half way through and so hadn't fallen off yet. The ratchet mechanism also intrudes onto the spool area so you can't wind very much on until running the risk of it failing to ratchet at all. I *also* don't like that the hooks are relatively open at the end rather than ending parallel to the strap: This too seems a likely point of failure because if the strap isn't pulled really tight it can work loose. On the plus side, they are quite strong and seem well made for the price. But the design flaws mean that IMHO these are not a good choice. I actually went back to the cheap orange ones because even though they're not nearly as strong, they're a lot more reliable.

        Good tiedowns, after practice
They do work well. But the release is different from other tiedowns and was not obvious to me. If you never used this type tiedown-- you can't wrap more than a foot of webbing. You pull all the excess webbing through, so there's just a little slack. Now start working the lever. While they are strong for the price, don't expect to honk them up to hundreds of pounds strain without trouble. If you need more force, use more tiedowns. Yes, on some small jobs you may have 4 yards of extra webbing flapping in the breeze. Wind the excess over your rack and back then tie-off the end so it doesn't slap on the highway. Or wrap it around your hand and tie-off this bundle. If you never have large jobs, cut and melt the end. Neatly so it still fits the slot. The release is actually sorta smart, but not clear at first. Pull the finger-grip on the lever. Swing the lever ALL the way back. It fits in a notch. Press finger-grip into the notch, this releases the body ratchet, ZING the webbing goes slack. Leave the main lever in the slot as you pull the webbing through. Then re-set the main lever for storage or further use. Don't loan-out your tiedowns! They usually come back all tangled. At this price it is best to send your friend to Home-Depot and get his/her own straps. I don't get the "camouflage". I got a chrome motorcycle, or a big blue tarp, camo straps won't hide my load. But I guess different folks have different needs.

Like you should expect for $17
If you lost the instructions, please play with a ratchet until you figure it out. I promise that basic spatial reasoning will come in handy later in life. Mine did have one tab that was not bent properly, but it honestly took 20 seconds to bend with a screwdriver. The straps are thinner than I hoped, but I guess that's so you can draw in more strap without it bunching up (because people apparently don't think to pretension soft loads). These should be perfect for tying down furniture, but they are NOT suitable for lifting motorcycles overhead.

        BEST STRAPS I'VE OWNED
I Have owned these straps among others and these have outperformed any others that I have bought. Great value and great performance.

Watch the YouTube video before using
These are great ratchet tie-downs ... a super value for the money. I've only had them a week, and I've already used them to transport a queen mattress and box frame, as well as a kayak, on the roof of my Honda Pilot. The instructions that come with the ratchets are horrible. If you've never used one before, go to YouTube and search for a how-to video on ratchet tie-downs. It will save you much time and aggravation. The process for using them is not intuitive.

        Great straps
I'm not a fan of the camo, but these straps are excellent quality. The ratchet mechanism is very well made and strong. I also love the thick rubber handle and release latch. No problems out of these yet, and I bet they will last a long time. All the negative reviews I read about these straps appear to be coming from people that have never used, or have minimal experience with ratchet straps. It's not the straps fault you can't figure it out.

Fair price and average quality ONLY. I would buy more if I needed them, without a second thought, BUT they about HALF the price!

          Awsome tie downs
So last year I purchased an 8 pack of these, it was around christmas and they were around $15.00 for all 8, I wish that I had bought at least 2 more sets. I have craftsman tie downs, I have harborfreight tie downs, and some other brands. The only way to find out what brand you like is to buy different ones or hope that the reviews that people write are actually decent reviews. After buying those HDX tie downs I wont buy any other brand unless HDX goes down in quality. I have gone out of my way to purchase more HDX tie downs. They are great quality, and the ratchets are very smooth, and they release really nice, some brands the release mechanism will go to the side and then bind up. Not these I would highly recoment purchasing these, they are a great product if using them as intended. The people writing reviews about these breaking are people that are not using them as intended. I have probably 60 or so Tie down now and I use them for everything, I have a few in every one of my vehicles and a bunch of them in my shop, I have 6 atv's and 2 dirt bikes so I need a lot. If you go with HDX you wont go wrong I promise. I hope this will help you on your decision.

          OK for the money!
I purchased a set of these straps to secure a load to my trailer and they worked fine. I loaned them out and when they were returned they were a mess. After an hour of unknoting, untwisting and unwinding, I finally got them loaded the right way and they work fine. If you notice a knot don't tighten them or it will be murder to get the knot out. I suggest a little practice to make sure you have them threaded right and as one user suggested pull them relatively tight before winding or you will overfill the spool. Also when new the ratchet mechanism is very tight and it makes them hard to unwind. I still think they're OK for the money and I plan to buy another set.

Easy to use, inexpensive, great product
Let me first say I have never used a tie-down like this. I needed to buy a queen mattress and foundation and had to fasten to my vehicle's roof. Bought this due to its length and quantity and price. Never using a fastener, i read the instructions and fiddled with them a bit before I had to actually use it. Instructions were clear enough and it made sense. worked fine in practice. On top of the car, through the doors, I figured out the hooks can go together and I should manually pull the slack through as tight as I can before ratcheting. Just made sense. Ratcheting was super easy. No issues like other posts. The instructions say to not overtighten. I did for one. That mattress wasn't moving at all. Loosening the non over-tightened one was simple; just pull back the black release bar and light the ratcheting handle as far backwards as you can. It is designed to release the other brake. Worked great. The over-tightened one took more effort, but again, all I really had to do was push the ratchet backwards harder. Even the "packaging" works as a case and can be reused pretty handily. A+ product. Also, I'm not an impatient person nor an idiot and I rarely have issues with operating products.

          Horrible Product
Purchased this product to tie down a mattress to the top of a Jeep Wrangler. The ratchet mechanism was incredibly temperamental, as you ratchet down the excess strap to tighten the load the excess strapping material would need to be guided into the mechanism with extreme precision otherwise the ratchet tine/teeth would become caught up by the excess strap rendering the mechanism useless and diffidcult to remedy .Ultimately I used a $10.00 surfboard tie down strap and that did the trick. Save your money, learn how to tie few knots and buy some rope (not in that order). This product is inconvenient and very temperamental when you need it.

You get what you pay for
These are low cost straps. The spring-loaded ratchet mechanism came apart on more than one strap when releasing tension. Not a major problem to fix, but probably would not have happened on a better made unit.

            Ratcheting Tie Down
Excellent product, very easy to use. Due to design the strap does not tangle in the mechanism. The rubberized handles prevents the items being held down from being scratched or damaged.

            Not impressed...
These straps are cheesy. OK for light duty like securing a tarp or something. Spend a few more $ if you really gotta hold something. The gears, etc. on these are just not as well made and will slip occasionally. I was sorry I bought these.

            Dead simple
Didn't take too much to figure out. Only cons is that you need two hands to loosen, but that may be true of all tie downs.

              close but no cigar
the major problem was how much effort you need to release and unwind the rope. you actually need two hands to release two separate locks
