This is a serious caulking gun! It is well made and has options that are not usually offered in the average caulk gun. It is larger than I had expected, but it is still easy to use. I was surprised with how well I could caulk with this gun, it functions so much more smoothly than those cheap caulk guns I am familiar with. It weighs about 3 pounds.
It is ready for 20 oz. sausage packs, but includes accessories to convert it for usage of 10 oz. cartridges or bulk caulk. I just removed the piston cap from the bottom and inserted a cartridge. Included accessories are 3 wide nozzles, 3 narrow nozzles, 1 quick release bulk piston cup, 2 quick release sausage piston cups, and a ladder hook.
I have only used the regular cartridges for now, that is all I have on hand. However, it is nice to have the options for bulk materials also. The attached rod for puncturing the tubes is sturdy and convenient. I never thought I would be impressed with a caulking gun, but this one is well worth the price!

I will comment in my opinion, this tool might be more suitable to a commercial field, than that of a Joe Weekender. It is an excellent product from what I have used and tested around two homes and a concrete patio. Quality built throughout and flexible engineering makes for a good investment. Easy to use, quick to set up and cleaning was simple. I like the 20:1 compression as it is provides more control for me, as I do not have a daily use for it such as a window or gutter installer. Lightweight and breaks down for small footprint storage I highly recommend it for it's flexibility and quality.

This is a great 3 in 1 tool that is a lot easier to use that it appears to be. You can definitely use the standard caulk cartridges that everyone is most familiar with. It loads just as easy as a standard caulking gun. You unscrew the top cap, slip the caulk cartridge in, adjust the rod, and screw the cap back on.
The gun comes by default set up to use the contractor sausage packs. You only need to remove one small cup attachment on the rod to convert it to standard cartridges. No tools are needed to remove this cup.
The included nozzles are only used in conjunction with sausage packs or bulk caulk. There are 6 re-usable nozzles of varying sizes available.
You can also use this for "bulk" caulk. Meaning the caulk comes in a big bucket and not in any sort of container. You basically put on the bulk attachment cup, put the end of the gun into the bucket of caulk, and pull up the plunger. The caulk is drawn into the gun like a syringe. This is messy in any situation.
My one criticism of the product is that the little rod that punctures the seal of caulk cartridges is not long enough. I had a hard time using it.
The 12:1 measurement refer to the force that the gun exerts when you squeeze the trigger. 12:1 would be for every one pound you exert on the trigger, 12 lbs is exerts out of the gun. This would be sufficient for most home use for light-medium duty applications.

Have not used a better built caulk gun in my life. While the cheapo ones will get you through the job I think this one will last a lot longer and is a lot nicer to use. The trigger mechanism is smooth as a baby's bottom and the quality of the parts is excellent. This thing was made to last and be a pleasure to use. I am not used to seeing this kind of attention to detail on basic tools!
To tell you the truth I didn't even realize what a sausage gun was used for until I read up and ordered this because I knew it would handle cartridges and I have three boxes of older caulk and this would contain blowouts or I you can just pour in the tubes carefully using an older regular gun and use this as a bulk caulk gun.
These guns handle three types of caulk usage, 10 ounce cartridges that generally are much cheaper but lower quality than a sausage pack. 20 ounce sausage pack caulk that I have only been able to find on special web sites for construction and painting. These generally run about twice as much per ounce as the cartridge but are made strictly for the highest of new construction and special applications and then bulk bins that you fill by sucking up the caulk without any container. On the sausage and bulk containers is where you will generally find caulk built to be used in guns with a higher ratio than the 3:1 or 12:1 so take those options in mind when considering what gun to order. Most clean up can be done just by only cleaning the metal tube (not on the 10 ounce tubes unless they blow out) and then the tips or possibly the end piece which the JES comes with two types for tubes and then for sausage and bulk.
The kit also includes a back handle to pull back the plunger or hand the tool. Three large cone tips and three narrower cone tips giving the operator the option of how big or what angle to cut them if any.
So I've bought some new 10 ounce latex caulk tubes and using this gun this way as I slowly begin finishing touches on the house painting and trim work. I'm thinking now that when I do my little small weird construction jobs using like thin set mortar for lighted glass walls or brick surrounding forms that when I mix it up then using the a big tip I can suck it out of the bucket and run beads instead of trying to the perfect level across the entire block, tile or brick and save time, money and headaches because it should be as strong as necessary for those particular jobs.
So basically I found out any form of thickened liquid for many purposes can be put into a sausage gun and used including the prefab 10 ounce tubes. Then by reading the factory instruction or by having worked with it before you will know what will work in this JES 12:1 or you need to step up to a higher thrust ratio and make hard jobs much easier or having time let's say to come back and work glazing compound instead of doing one small section because trying to get it in place the old fashioned way has the starting point drying already.
