The noise level of the installed disposal will be influenced by installation conditions. Because of this, perceived noise levels will vary. The Silencer Technology on the EX75C is an insulation technology that reduces the sound output during operation. When the disposal starts, the impellers will swing into position to guide the food to the grind ring. When they hit the grind ring, you hear this noise. The Moen garbage disposals do not require a tool to clear a jam. Once the power is off inserting a wooden spoon into the disposal up against a swivel impeller and begin to push. The motion of pushing the swivel impeller should allow the entire turntable to be rotated manually. Continue this rotation until you can rotate the turntable clockwise or counterclockwise a full revolution insuring it has released and unjammed. With regard to the noise you hear at start-up, this is the motor turning on and the impellers clicking/hitting against the wall of the disposal as they begin to move/start the grinding process.
