Package protection terrible none! May be used
Switching from Milwakee to Makita! Received in a Makita box with no packaging to protect the drill and impact just bouncing around inside the box and the batteries have scuffs on them. Very disappointed in makita packaging and possible the is a return being sold as new! I will be returning to Home Depot see if another one from store is packed the same

Great Batteries that Last a Long Time
I am impressed with how long these 5ah batteries last. If you only have these two you will be able to charge one full before the other ones needs charging.

      Great Somewhat Compact Grinder
Good grinder paired up with a 5ah battery, not too heavy but wished it had a slightly slanted handle for longer periods.

          I love it!
This Makita oscillating multi-tool is a beast! I went through 2 DeWalt OMT’s prior to this, both within 6 months. The 2nd one died the first day I used it. I liked the trigger on the DeWalt, the Makita is a simple on/off switch, with variable speed selector. But I got used to it within the first day. Actually have come to prefer it - it offers better control. It was worth the switch over - this Makita is 3 times the tool the DeWalt ever was! 3x bulkier and heavier (which I like and prefer), 3x the precision, and 3x more powerful! Feels like I could use this OMT as a hammer, it’s so solid. Hope Makita continues to build all their products heavy duty, as with this tool. It cuts through the side of a house like butter (stucco, plywood, wire, and all). Just love it!! Can’t recommend it enough!

            BATTERY CAUGHT FIRE AND EXPLODED
DO NOT BUY.. I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY. Had my mother not been home, our entire home would have burned down. The battery was left to charge for the day and our dog started barking when the battery was catching fire. I feel like this should be a lawsuit but want to protect others from having this happen to them. I repeat.. this is really dangerous. My mom threw it outside while it was on fire and a few minutes later it exploded. Had it exploded while she was moving it, it could have really caused serious injuries.

Good Kit at a Decent Price Point
Bought this compact combo, which included an extra 2AH Battery. Was looking hard at the Big Red M tool line, but based on more than a few negative comments on the Red Hammer Drill I decided to go with Makita, Besides, I would rather have a Japanese tool over a China tool any day. Both the drill and the impact are very powerful. I like the advanced battery charger system with a chip in the battery and a CPU in the charger to enable a precision charge that optimizes battery charge and health. I like both tools fell solid and run great. I only have a couple of gripes after two days of steady use. First, the light on the tool is located just above the trigger and aims up at the bit. Only problem is that since the light is below the bit, you don’t actually get any light where you need it. The light is very bright, which tends to magnify the darkness of the shadow on top of the bit where you are looking trying to see the screw. The attached pic demonstrates the shadow effect, although this was taken in a well lit garage so the effect is not as pronounced in the photo, but I think you can get the idea. It’s tough to see anything of the top of the bit or screw in darker areas. Makita needs to adopt the three light setup around the face of the tool. Last gripe has to do with the fwd/rev selector switch, which is a standard type switch that you push from right to left for forward and vice versa for reverse. The switch is like butter, which normally would be a good thing. As long as you are running the drill in forward the switch is fine, but I find when I have the drill in reverse the selector switch rides right where my trigger finger wants to ride and with that buttery selector switch, there is a tendency to inadvertantly move the switch to the netural positon or to the forward position as you manipulate the tool. This is a great set for the money, but if I did a lot of work in dark areas the light would be a deal breaker for me, you just can’t see anything without addtional light on the work. If you work in well lit areas or only occasionally work in dark areas it will be fine. The selector switch is something that I will get used to in time. These two gripes warrant the 4 star rating.

Combine this multi tool with a 5Amp Battery and it will not let you down! HIGHLY recommend and will absolutely buy again if mine ever breaks. I use this daily for work, cutting subfloor, drywall, and other miscellaneous things for work and I always know I can count on my multi-tool. Easy to use. Easy to understand. Has six different power modes set in the side- super easy to learn. I love it.

Purchased this xrj01z saw over the traditional xrj04x. Removed it from the box and installed a Diablo bimetal 6inch blade for cutting wood and nails. Started cutting through an old floor joist and the blade guide broke. Home Depot was gracious and allowed me to return it and upgrade to the xrj04x. The xrj01z, in my experience, is more of a light duty tool. This would be good for cutting PVC and other light application materials. I own several (6) makita tools and this is the only one I've ever had an issue with. The xrj04x is running like a champ on the demo. I have not lost faith in Makita, but this was not a good tool for moderate to heavy use applications YEMV.

Let me say that I have many Makita Products and not a single one ever let me down. This saw was the first Makita product I returned because the saw is way under powered. I bought the saw because i needed a saw without cable and small enough to get in tide spaces to cut nails on pallets. I put a 5 amp battery on the saw from my Makita circular saw and the battery was good but the saw even if I used a high quality blade never made it to the nails in the pallets. The saw also gets really hot to a point were I was not able to hold it anymore. If you cut some PVC pipe or copper pipes this saw will fit you but not if you try to take some wood apart. You will need a cable driven saw or the larger battery Makita Reciprocating saw.

Got these on clearance. Perfect size and run time. They are the same size as the 3.0Ah ones but with a longer run time. Note: They will not work with older Makita tools that don't have the star on the battery receiver or yellow receiver and don't support the safety features of the newer batteries. Check the notches. Will not work with the bigger notch.

terrible customer service and awful tool.
Purchased this sawzall with a brushless kit about a year and a half ago. Few days ago the sawzall blade holder just fell off while cutting some 1 by 1 wood. both set screws just snapped off. Not the quality I'd expect from Makita which I have been using for 15 years. Called customer service and they told.me without a receipt I'm just out of luck. I'll just switch to Milwaukee.

I had the 2.0ah that came with the drill which did great. But these are amazing. I have yet to have a project that I have ran these 5ah to even half. I wish I would have bought them a long time ago. I love the push bottom power indicator. The 5ah are only 1/2 longer than the 2ah batteries and the weight difference is minimal.

I pirchased this product because I needed a hammer drill. The second it came I opened the product and was pleased with the carrying case. I charged the batteries and put it right to work. It drilled every hole without a problem. I own other Makita products and have never had any complaints or issues and the charge time is awesome. I would reccomend this product to anyone in the market for a new drill

Maybe I’m biased because this is my first set of cordless drills, but my father has had Craftsman and Dewalt. The craftsman gave up a long time ago so we’ve had Dewalt for a while now. I like the look and feel of the Makita, it’s just so strong. The set I bought has a solid, heavy feel. This isn’t that little-bitty set, it’s the brushless set so it should last forever.

Honestly wanted to avoid for while longer, but ultimately impressed with it
This isn’t a tool i expected to need for a while, and I honestly hoped to be able to postpone buying anything until Makita releases a more compact, brushless update (preferably with a light, which would be really handy for a tool of this nature). But I ended up having an extremely specific problem which this was easily able to bail me out of and I simply had no other way to go about it. After a lot of painful consideration against several other multitools this still emerged as the best option, and when factoring in the price vs the power and robustness I guess it’s actually pretty impressive. The plunge cut in the included pic through some relatively soft (presumably pine) scrap probably only took some 10 seconds (not counting a few seconds to clear sawdust midway through). The tool-less blade change design is easy to use and extremely stout. Something not obvious when I bought it is that by not having its ergonomics quite as over-committed to one singular grip as certain competitors’ offerings, this Makita unit can actually be more flexible to being gripped different ways depending on whatever angle your work space constrains you to hold it from. At this point this is more an observation than a preference to me as I’m not any sort of “multitool guru” at all, but similar design choices show up on some of their other tools so this seems to have been a purposeful ergonomic decision on their part. I would still prefer if it were trimmer especially toward the end of the tool body approaching the battery. But what ultimately elevated this tool above the competition in spite of my preference for something more compact was the vibration-absorbing base. Reviews of competitor’s offerings frequently noted that the oscillations of multitools can damage battery housings where they interface with the tool over time, such that they may not properly fit other tools after a while. From where I sit that may as well be damaging every other tool those batteries also get used in. Committing to another battery platform is expensive enough but buying into a new one knowing the specific tool you’re getting will be messing up the batteries that go into it was going to be a deal-breaker every time. This simply isn’t a concern for this Makita unit. Looking hard at this thing versus a number of competitors’ offerings, my mind kept coming back to that, so this ended up being a really straightforward decision.

I needed to buy new batteries to complete a deck project after my last original 3.0Ah battery died (after 12-13 years), and swapping around the one 4.0Ah battery I had really slowed things down ("Are you done with the battery yet? OK. Throw it over to me.") The fuel gauge is pretty nice after all the years of not knowing how close you were to a dead battery. And the capacity is pretty amazing. I used the packs for hours of screwing or drilling into pressure-treated lumber, and rarely got to half power. The only thing that challenged the batteries was the circular saw; cutting through a very wet, pressure-treated 2x12, cutting stair stringers. 12 feet took 3 batteries (almost with 2).

Both drills were lightweight and ergonomically comfortable. The charging speed and battery life is impressive. They are easy to use, as all of the settings are clearly marked and understandable. Although I haven't used them extensively YET, they do scream durability and dependability when I do use them. I also haven't use the built in belt clips yet, those to will be VERY convenient at some point.
