I only used it for ta little bit. Worked great in cultivating the soil. I love how you can slow the wheels down so they don't dig as much. The only issue and is the reason I returned the first one is the gear box on the tines leaked a little oil in the box. The one day deals is worth the batteries alone and a 5 year warranty. Therefore, I will keep it.. Also, the package was beat up but no damage to the product though.

Shear pins break so easily
Wrote a review 6 months ago and pulled it because they said they would ship new manufactures shear pins. Ryan in customer service said the company was aware of the problem and I can expect the pins prior to june. Actually said should have stock in May. Since pulling review I haven’t recieved a response and no pins. I really like the tiller but without proper shear pins it’s useless.. Not happy with purchase and do not recommend.

Machine with good potential - but be careful.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The tiller is powerful, and enjoyable to use, in comparison with a gas rear tine tiller. There are issues that require some maintenance to get the most out of it. 1.) The bottom compartment with the transport motor and driveshaft can fill with soil, packing the gears, risking damage or malfunction. Keep a 10 mm socket handy to remove the panel and inspect and clean out any soil that has built up after every couple uses. 2.) The shear pins that secure the tines are weak. It is easy to keep spares on hand if they snap. However, I found after the first replacement of the pins, they never snapped again, as accumulation of soil and plant material packed in between the tine assemblies and the shaft, effectively fusing them into position, and becoming very hard to remove. This makes the protective nature of the shear pins meaningless. The gearbox seems very strong, and I don't expect problems, but beware if used heavily. Still - given these issues, maintenance is still less than with my gas tiller, while I enjoy using it very much. If you have a large garden, bigger than about 30 x 30, an extra set of 4 batteries is nice and if you have the ability to fast charge 4 at a time, the runtime of the tiller is fine, and surpasses my own endurance for tilling. I'm annoyed by the soil in the compartment issue, as it seems like a silly design deficiency that should not be, but overall, I do very much like and enjoy using this tiller. It's worth a little extra vigilance to use.

      Buyer Beware!!!
Stay AWAY! Power sucks w/2 batteries. OK at breaking ground but we broke shear pin/hitch clip. Spent +6 hours on hold +time with support (3 calls) and still unable to get parts to replace. (1st sent me some odd parts, last order is a no show.) I have a useless tiller that I can't get a part for and have to find hours to take off so I can sit on hold with the useless support for a replacement part!!! Disappointed! Been on hold for longer than I used it! Will look for return options.

Tiller was missing the hardware to put together? We had to drive 1 1/2 hours 4 times to get it straight. When we put the tiller together it became extremely loud when we engaged the tiller. Something was obviously wrong and we brought it back. We wanted it to work so bad? It wasn’t a good experience, but the customer service was great.

Does a great job tilling soil. Wish it had four individual tines to be able to remove two and till between the rows. Also could use an extra notch on the handle to lower the handle a little lower. I'm 5ft.10 and could use that extra notch. Over-all, a good tiller.

          Powerful rear tine tiller.
The reviews almost made me not buy this. But thinking most people only write a review when they are not happy I decided to give it a try. This tiller is very impressive power wise. The batteries last about 45 min on each set. When 1 set is depleted just turn on the second set with the red key and keep going. The only down side I seen is it does take a while to charge the batteries up as they will not charge right away till they cool down. The area I did on 1 charge I was happy with.

            Tine pins
I got one use out of this Ryobi tiller before the right tine pin snapped and the right tine quit working. I was hoping after it had been some time for the 1 star reviews Ryobi would have fixed this. The battery runs as expected however it takes an hour to cool down before the battery will recharger. For 15 minutes of run time and waiting an hour for it cool then you have to wait for it to charge. I am currently trying to get ahold of ryobi customer service to try and remedy this.

              "the beast"
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This tiller is a beast compared to my previous tiller (5HP gas engine Troy-Bilt Pony). It has more tilling power and grunt as compared to the Troy-Bilt. My garden soil has a fairly high clay content and this tiller powered on through it. Upon breaking ground and preparing my garden, I did not have an issue with broken shear pins on the tine shafts, as others have reported. I tried tilling at gradually deeper levels with each pass. The largest negative I can see with the tiller is with battery run time. It is a 40v tiller that basically operates at 80v (using 2-40v batteries concurrently). I got about 15mins of tilling time from a pair of 6Ah 40v batteries. The included dual rapid charger does a fairly quick job of charging, but I would recommend not using the tiller until the batteries are completely discharged, rather switch them out for fully charged batteries when the current batteries are down to 1-2 bars. The batteries do get fairly warm during use and can require some cooling time (delaying charging) if they have been totally discharged or used under severe load. From reading reviews by others, I would recommend adding weight to the front compartment to enhance handling and tilling efficiency. Positives: grunt and sheer power; uses 40v batteries which can be used in other Ryobi 40v tools; works ground quickly Negatives: battery run time, maneuvering (transport) speed is quite fast, may need ballast weight in front of tiller

The Ryobi tiller does the job. The tiller has some torque and I do recommend users to put some ballast in the front hopper for traction. I don't have the problems with bouncing batteries or broken pins like others said. The one thing I don't like is going thru multiple batteries just to get through tilling an area.

First time using it broke - Not worth the money.
The first time I used this it broke. What a waste. It worked to till in two rows in our greenhouse and then just stopped. The tiller makes a loud whirring sound and does work. Something is definitely wrong in the gearbox. Not worth the money. Absolute junk.

Replaced the flimsy cotter pins holding the tines with threaded bolt and locking lug nuts. Works great, powerful tool without annoying pull start of gas tillers.

seems to be great power, shear bolts?
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought this last month and today was first chance to use it. It handled pretty well and tilled ground well. Critiques: Even with ballast full of rocks and dirt, i still had to push it some, tires just spun. Additionally, I hit one rock and the shear bolt broke. The real problem is there are none available! Otherwise we'll see how it goes!

Cotter pins break constantly with each use
This machine tills the ground very good and easy to use .. But it is so cheaply made everytime you hit the smallest rock you will have to make a repair .. I have used this tiller 3 times ( under 4 hours) And have had to replace the cotter pins each time …. Even with different stronger cotter pins the design causes them to break to easy Ryobi should send a $50 dollar coupon ( voucher) for the inconvenience they causes all there customers with faulty equipment or a full recall and refund

Couldn’t edit my one star rating
Giving three until after I get the new shear pins. Recieved an email from Ryan at Ryobi saying they are aware of the issue and are attempting to resolve it. If they work better than the last this tiller is a 5. I’m one that appreciates customer service and ryobi has always been better than the rest. Because of that I tend to stick to them for power tools. I am a hobbyist and not a professional but use the tools a great deal. Hopefully the new manufacturers pins will work well Kirk

I don’t recommend this tiller. The batteries don’t last very long, 8 to 10 minutes, while tilling 1” deep in light top soil. I used new fully charged batteries and they just don’t last. When the tiller is working it works well, equal to a gas powered tiller.

Tilller works ok, Ryobi is horrible!
Tiller worked OK, but the pin broke after 20 minutes of use. Try calling Ryobi and was on hold for over an hour. So much for a 5 year warranty if you cannot submit for one.

                              Better than expected
When I ordered this I was excited to work but be on the weaker side. I was wrong, this tiller is almost as good as my old gas one. However there are some major design flaws. The hardware used to attach tines to tiller shear easy, I had to replace with high grade bolts. The other issue, possibly a safety feature, the batteries will pup up when tiller hits a rock. It’s a minor annoyance
