This fertilizer contains grass seed to thicken the lawn. A combination of fertilizer and seed is something I’ve not used before, believing that fertilizer helps grass to spread via its roots and take over bare spots. I applied this fertilizer as directed to several bare spots, each less that 12 inches across, and the grass did thicken, though I think it might have thickened just as much with simply fertilizer, along with adequate moisture. This is good fertilizer, though I think that the seed adds little.

My lawn had quite a few thin or bares spots, and I bought a bag of this product in April to fill up the gaps and improve the lawn overall. I applied it in May multiple times and every time I racked the seeds down and soaked the area daily. However, I've not seen a single seedling coming out of the bare spots where I applied the product. Now the weather is getting hot and my lawn looks just like it was last year. The product did not do as claimed.

We are sorry that you are disappointed with your purchase of Scotts Turf Builder Thick'R Lawn Sun and Shade. This product does best when applied when temperatures are between 65-80 and fluctuating temperatures can slow germination. This is not what we expect from this product, and we would be interested in discussing this further so that we can learn more about this issue and extend our product guarantee. At your earliest convenience, please call us at 877-220-3089 and one of our representatives would be glad to assist you. scotts

Very durable application. I put it down in March in some very Spring weather looking forward to seeing some results in two weeks. Well, the last snow and ice storm came the next week and now 6 weeks later this tough seed/fertilizer application came through with FLYING COLORS! Once the weather broke again and watering for two weeks I now have a full and velvet looking yard.

        wow.
We do not have green thumbs. We have the slightest idea on how to grow grass— with that being said, this stuff worked! We installed fesuce sod last year that was beautiful and lush, and after the winter we were left with unsightly thin dead grass. We saw this and decided to give it a shot! We used the handheld spreader. Every day theres a noticeable difference! The pic attached shows a difference of 2 weeks in between. Love this stuff.

I had a lawn ripped up by moles a couple years ago. I didn't have much luck just overseeding with just the regular grass seed, so I decided to try this. It is definitely to be working after a couple weeks with new growth coming in. I did use a lot more of the product than the directions said to use. I also used a de-thatching machine before putting the seeds down. The type of seed included is: Wendy Jean Creeping Red Fescue, Defender Perennial Ryegrass, Silver Dollar Perennial Ryegrass, Kent Creeping Red Fescue, Avalanche Kentucky Bluegrass, Jump Start Kentucky Bluegrass The type of soil amendments are Gypsum and Sustane The fertilizer is 9% Nitrogen, 1% phosphate, 1% Potassium

For the past year, I have TRIED & FOUGHT desperately to fill in the gaps and thicken the lawn on both my front and back yard. Results-Nada. For a last result, I picked up several 40# bags of Thick'r Lawn and decided to give it a go. I first thatched and aerated the lawn. I then rolled out 3-1 using my broadcast spreader. I still have my fingers crossed, but it seems to be working.

Perfect for over-seeding in fall or spring. This large bag contains seed, fertilizer and a soil improver. It is applied with a spreader. The bag covers about 4,000 sq ft which is a great size for most lawns. I needed three of those for my lawn but you can only apply it to one area if you'd like. Before spreading, be sure to dethatch the lawn so the seeds can make their way down to the soil. I applied this in early spring and although March and April were unseasonably cool, I got some sprouts in blank areas and the lawn thickened up nice. My mix contained six different types of seeds (see picture); red/creeping fescue for shady areas and ryegrass/bluegrass for part shade/ full sun areas. A great mix of seed although I would like to have seen some tall fescue for my climate. Seed was less than a year old.

This is a 3 in 1 product. It comes with a blend of fertilizer, seed and a soil enhancer. I typically use gypsum for the soil enhancer, but this one had that in the product and more...nitrogen, phosphate, potash, calcium, sulfur. The seed used in this is Wendy Jean Creeping red fescue, Defender rye grass, Silver Solar rye grass, Kent Creeping red fescue, Avalanche Kentucky bluegrass and Jumbo Start Kentucky bluegrass. The best part is there are ZERO weeding ingredients. So if you have grass like mine that is a hodge-podge of everything under the sun, then this is your product. The seed has been treated with mefenoxam -- do NOT use near food, feed or oil purposes per the directions. It is an engineered fungicide (I had to look that up). It can be used with any style of spreader. I like it. I roughed up some of the thinner patches of grass in my front yard with a rake. I then spread the fertilizer and watered regularly. It took a few weeks to turn a solid green and show growth, but it worked!

I had an area in the backyard lawn that was all mossed over so once I got rid of the moss several weeks ago. I applied this sun and shade product to it. I marked it off with white thread so that I can see how it is doing. See pics. Its an interesting product, a combination of 3 components, Seeds, fertilizer, and what smells like manure is the soil improver that is listed on the bag. See the pic of what it looks like straight out of the bag. Once I applied it and using the back side of a rake to smooth it out. Okay I didn't use a spreader, but just slowly shook it out of a scoop. So my coverage was heavier than described on the bag, but I figure I had a severe bald spot area to cover. Once done, I gently sprayed water on it t soak it well.

A very simple all in one mix. it's a good value considering it does 3 steps in one. A good time saver. I was able to get this down in between rain showers. It spreads very evenly in my Scott's drop spreader. No clumping. The seeds stayed mixed evenly with the fertilizer and soil conditioner. It is very easy to see when in the lawn. Has a pinkish hue. I have always had good results with Scott's. I thatched the lawn before dropping the seed to scratch the soil and get rid of the moss we get here in Seattle. Its too early to see the seeds germinate but I will write another review to show the grass after is up and ready to mow!

I received this to spread on my front lawn. My lawn takes a beating every year. It has lots of thin spots due to clover moving in last year, and subsequently being killed off with an herbicide. I live in Kansas which is hard to get decent grass to grow, as we get too cold in the winter for the warm-region grasses, and our summers get too hot for the cool-region grasses. The Scotts turf builder looks to be a good combination of seed, fertilizer, and soil enhancer. I spread it over the lawn with a spreader. We have had good consistent light rains since then, and a week and a half later I have seen some sprouts coming up already. I expect it to speed up as the temperature warms up within the next few weeks.

This excellent grass seed, soil improvement mixture was perfect for filling in the thin areas in my yard. It comes in a thick resealable ziplock bag. Good detailed instructions including spreader settings are printed on the back of the bag. The seed mixture was loose and dry with no clumps (see photo). It covered 4,000 sq feet with the dial on my basic Scott broadcast spreader set to 9. We had a heavily shaded back yard and just had seven trees removed for more sun. This product was the perfect choice to thicken the thin grass this spring going into he summer. It also worked well to fill in some bare areas in the front lawn.

I often find myself having to purchase a big bag of grass seed and separate bags of fertilizer and some sort of mulch/compost just to fill in bare spots in the lawn. Then I have extra left over sitting around in the garage. This 12 lb Lawn Thickener Sun and Shade is perfect for taking care of those thin or bare spots in the lawn. Preparation is key. Rake to loosen the soil beforehand and don't forget to turn on the sprinkler to moisten everything afterwards (for about a week).

Spring is right around the corner and this is perfect for any yard. I laid this down right before rain to make sure it soaked in. Within a few days I noticed my grass becoming greener and this February in Kentucky! Can't speak to any added thickness in the grass. I have a normal sized front yard and the 12 pound bag was just right for the size. Will update review if anything changes.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Thick' R Lawn Sun & Shade and appreciate your feedback.

This grass seed will germinate best when temperatures are consistently in the 65-80°F range. Cool nighttime temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination.
