I checked the feeder today and was shocked. The lever on the feeder was clamped down on one of my sparrow song birds. It was killed by this feeder. It’s neck was broken. I’m taking the feeder to Home Depot today.

Dangerous
This bird got his head stuck in the feeder and sadly it died. There was no way to free it.

NOT squirrel proof.
I bought this as a more reasonably priced squirrel proof feeder, however the squirrels just grip the tube and put their heads below the baffle.

Hello Bill, Thank you for your review on Squirrel-X Squirrel MX5 Oil Rubbed Bronze Squirrel Resistant Feeder, 3.4 lbs. Feed Capacity. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. If you have any other questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Consumer Service Team at 1-800-352-9164 or consumerservices@classicbrands.net. Squirrels broke this in a week.
It’s easy to fill. It’s cute. But for the price it should’ve lasted more than a week.

Hello suselish, Thank you for your review on Squirrel-X Squirrel MX5 Oil Rubbed Bronze Squirrel Resistant Feeder. There are 3 things that go into making a bird feeder squirrel-proof: Design, Materials Used and Proper Placement. We suggest to place a bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success. We hope this information helps! If you have any other questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Consumer Service Team at 1-800-352-9164 or consumerservices@classicbrands.net. Not a bad feeder, but it needs initial setup.
As shipped (see the picture in the ad), the perches are too close to the main body and most birds can not get to the seed. The perches can be pulled out to create a reasonable sized perch, but the problem is that beyond the first couple of notches, there is nothing securing the perch. It's unstable and can fall out easily
The solution is adding a cable tie to each of the plastic 'arms' in the base, then extending the perches out as far as you like.
Now, this feeder is used as much as our other one, but keeps the squirrels out.

Don’t like at all! The rim around close to the bottom is too low. The bird can’t land and duck their heads down low enough to eat. The perches are too short and if try to extend them, they don’t hold and fall out. Our birds have given up trying.

Good looking feeder. May not be good for larger birds. Rather pricey, unsure if worth the money.

We're sorry to hear about that! Birds are creatures of habit and can take some time to adjust to a new feeder. You may want to try relocating the feeder to another area in your yard or temporarily removing any established feeders until the new one is being utilized.

I bought this mainly to counter the many pigeons which had recently discovered my backyard feeder, there is a neighborhood flock of about 30 or so. I don’t have a squirrel problem per se. So far the pigeons have not been able to solve it. They try to land on the baffle and peck seed through the cylinder but haven’t accessed ports yet. They end up on ground scavenging instead. The perch has been redesigned and is not movable. We are pleased with this product.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. We're sorry to hear that this happened to your feeder. When hanging a feeder, we recommend that it is placed 10-20 feet from launching points (fences, railings, roofs, branches) and at least 5 feet from the ground as squirrels are excellent jumpers. The feeder has a 30 day return period. We recommend reaching out to your local retailer for assistance if you are not satisfied.

I like it and the concept is good. The spring has a bit too much tension to trigger closing with smaller squirrels.

This is a very popular feeder for our local finches! It is also so fun to watch the squirrels try (and fail) to get into the feeder!
