A: They should be food grade HDPE (high density polyethylene), the same plastic used in milk jugs. I have not bought the ones from Home Depot but every other source of these barrels are of that material.

Q:I assume this can be used for collecting water to drink?
by|Apr 28, 2021

Answer This Question
A: You would want to treat the water before drinking it. The rain barrel itself isn't the issue, but the roof and gutter that feed into the barrel may pick up trash, bird poop, etc.

A: Possibly.

A: Yes, that is what I use mine for. I have two hoses attached ? one for the bottom valve and one for the overflow connector. The hoses redirect the water to another part of the property. I plan to swap the hoses to a 1-inch underground PVC for aesthetics.

A: Yes but it depends on how much water it coming into the barrel. I would recommend piping an overfill pipe with some larger than a hose. That way you have a full barrel of water and route excess water away. Look up Uniseals, simple to use for this type of application.

Q:Is the top solid when it arrives? I want to use this to lay on its side to put three end to end filled with water with outlet and inlet on underside to create a caterpillar that kids can climb on. Would want to gorilla glue the lid on. ( is there a better way to seal the top???) Thanks

Answer This Question
A: The lid comes with a 4" hole that acts as the water inlet. If laying these horizontally for an interactive sculpture I would recommend purchasing whole barrels with no spigot attachments. Please email us at info@mirainbarrel.com for more information
