You could leave enough space between two bricks at the base for the propane feed tube and then fill the interior with lava rock and have the propane burner buried under the rock. You'd just need to find the proper burner and go on the net and hunt around to see how it can be done. Likely someone else has done it. The only issue I could foresee is if the burner wasn't positioned properly and heated up the lava rock to the point where it melted the propane hose. That could be a problem.

A:  I paid $179 and change for the kit at my local HD. I considered just buying the material. It's a simple build, but I couldn't find the steel ring sold separately. I paid about $50 more for the kit as opposed to just buying the material. That seems about right with the steel ring adding $50 to the price of the kit. You can find one piece, metal, insert rings on ebay. I just didn't feel like waiting for one to be delivered and finding out it didn't fit correctly.
