Q:This sunflower packaging is the worst ever devised. The plastic zipper breaks off about four times in five. Ridiculous! I am about to return two more boxes that I cannot be bothered to hack open once again. Fed up with it.

Q:Roughly how long do the birds take to germinate and grow? The other brand I bought only grew plants and no birds. I?ve already bought their cage and water cups. Just really disappointed about the lack of birds in the last batch. Any growing tips?

A:  Birds don't germinate and grow from bird seed. Sunflowers are the best you can hope to have germinate and grow from sunflower seeds.

Q:I've read that this type of seed is not liked by sparrows. Is that true?

            Answer This Question

A:  They seem to enjoy the sunflower seeds just fine. They do seem to reject the very hard ones but the squirrels and other birds eat those.

A:  Sparrows come to our feeder filled with black oil sunflower seed, along with chickadees, tufted titmice, downey woodpeckers, mourning doves, purple finches and others.

              by|Feb 5, 2022

A:  Mostly finches at our feeder, but there are a few sparrows. It may be that the sparrows here have more feeding options. My neighbor puts out a mixed seed blend.

A:  Sparrows are greedy little dinosaur descendents and do not discriminate against sunflower seeds. I buy the seeds for Cardinals, but all birds share. The sparrows also don't pick out sunflower seeds from the seed mixes.

A:  Hello, sparrows are known to eat many varieties of seed including Sunflower Seed. Thank you.

A:  Mine is full of wood chips too. It?s disappointing that there is so much filler in this. It may be from sunflower stems and such but there is an awful lot of it.

A:  If the bag is wood chips, it could be something like cedar mulch. Look at the bag closely. It should be full of seeds plus some small processing stem parts.. If you want cleaner, washed seeds, you need to pay more.

A:  These are stems and flower head material as they harvest. Yes it seems more is showing up lately.

A:  Mine are not full of wood chips. There are some small pieces of stems and brush but many of the birds need some fluff in their diet anyway. For the price, I do not find the extra matter too copious.
