A: Thank you for reaching out, Bob. Rust-Oleum Professional Galvanizing Compound Spray is intended to be used as a touch-up for damaged or weathered galvanized surfaces. This product is not intended to be used as a full surface galvanizing alternative. If the surface is not galvanized, we recommend Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Clear Enamel Spray if just looking for some added rust protection and corrosion resistance. Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of any oils prior to application. We also recommend lightly sanding smooth, hard, or glossy surfaces to promote full adhesion.

Q:I’m trying to make a fireman pole in the backyard using conduit. Would this prevent/deter rusting outside? Is the coating slick? Should I put another layer of a different rust oleum product on top for additional protection and to create a smooth finish?

A: Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Galvanizing Compound Spray is intended to be used as a touch-up paint for previously galvanized surfaces. We do not recommend using this product as a general purpose coating. Instead, Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Enamel Spray Paint may be a better option for your project. These sprays have gloss options and would offer a smoother finish than our Galvanizing Compound Sprays. The Professional Enamels will also offer rust protection on the surface!

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out. For the best results we would recommend first applying our Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Rust Reformer and then applying our Rust-Oleum Professional Galvanizing Compound Spray. This will provide a rust preventative base coat from the rust reformer and then a galvanized finish from the cold galvanizing compound.
