Q:Could I topcoat this with minwax polycrylic or a similar clear coat instead of using latex paint?

Answer This Question

A:  yes

A:  Please keep in mind that Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer is recommended to be top coated with a latex paint. If wanting to use a polycrylic finish, we recommend applying in a test area first to ensure the desired results and to apply a thin coat.

A:  iron dust... safety: wet and on the surface good... if and when sanding off, protect lungs and eyes... like you would with any paint.

A:  Great question! Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer, like all Rust-Oleum products, is unleaded and safe for use on toys and furniture. The cautions on the cans refer to the liquid form of the paint and are driven by the solvents in the paint. Once the paint is fully cured, the solvents have evaporated and are no longer in the coating; the remaining coating is a combination of solids made of pigments and additives bound by the resin and can be considered non-hazardous. This primer uses magnetite and is safe to use near electronics!

Q:One of the highlights pointed out about this paint is that it works with whiteboard paint. But then other questions/comments I've read say that it doesn't work. This is confusing and misleading to the customer. Can someone clarify if it works with a specific type of whiteboard paint or if the description is incorrect?

          Answer This Question

A:  No, we do not recommend usingRustoleum Specialty Magnetic Primer under Rust-Oleum Dry Erase Kit. Magnetic Primer can only be top coated with a latex paint. The Dry Erase Kit is a 2 part epoxy. Since epoxies are thicker than regular paint, the Magnetic Primer is not strong enough to work through the Dry Erase Kit. For a multipurpose surface, instead, use Rust-Oleum Magnetic Primer with Rust-Oleum Clear Chalkboard Paint.

A:  The magnetic paint is a primer, and is designed to be painted over by another paint. I don't see why it wouldn't work with the whiteboard paint. The one possible issue I can see is that the magnetic strength is very weak, and the whiteboard paint is quite thick. That might affect the ability to use magnets to hold things to the wall. The magnetic paint works best with very strong rare earth magnets. (If we use regular magnets, they do not have the power to hold paper to the wall.) From what I can tell, many of the people complaining the magnetic paint doesn't work applied the paint themselves. We hired a professional painter. It is "finicky" paint, and must be applied properly per the instructions. The whiteboard paint is also finicky. If you are not experienced as a painter, it's possible that the combination of the two could be less than effective.

A:  No Sonia, Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer is not designed to withstand the flexibility of the fabric. The dried paint will crack when applied to a flexible surface.

Q:I want to make a great White Board in my room to draw my ideas, but at first I only was looking for the White Gloss Dry Erase Kit, then I found out this product to make magnetic walls and I thought if it was possible to use them together applying first the magnetic coat and after dried apply the white gloss dry erase coat. It would be great to have a Magnetic White board, but I don't know if the thickness of the White board coat would affect the magnetic efect. Does someone has an answer to this? Q:Will painting on the back of an existing mirror make the mirror magnetic?

                        Answer This Question

A:  The paint has a very weak magnetic attraction. Even for a piece of paper, it takes a pretty strong magnet to hold up the paper. If you want to paint on the back of a mirror, so you can stick a magnet on the front, I doubt very much it would work, because of the thickness of the glass, even with the strongest rare earth magnet. If you wanted to make the mirror magnetic so it could attach to something, then the answer is definitely no! Sorry.

A:  No, Rust-Oleum Magnetic Primer is not strong enough to create a magnetic effect through a mirror. This product is recommended for use under no more than 2 coats of paint.

A:  I am 99% sure the thickness of the glass will an issue, but keep in mind, the paint isn't magnetic it attracts a good magnet, rare-earth preferably.

A:  Happy to help. There are several things to keep in mind when using the magnetic primer. The first thing is that the iron-containing pigment in the paint can easily settle to the bottom of the can. So stirring to get all of the pigment re-incorporated into the paint is essential. Also, it's important to use the right amount of paint for the area you're painting. Ideally, one quart of the primer is needed for about a 16 square foot area. If the product is not applied heavily enough, you won't get the full magnetic effect. If it takes more than 3 coats to get the proper amount on the surface, that's ok; simply keep applying until you have the correct amount on the surface for the area that you are covering. The smoother you get the primer on, the better it works, since the magnet will have more contact points to hang on with, so a foam roller is recommended for application. Larger, flexible magnets are usually the best to use since they're stronger and have more surface area. As a primer, this product can be painted over with just about any kind of wall paint without affecting the magnetism.

I applied 10 coats of this paint to a piece of plywood and it would not hold a memp clip with a p;iece of 8" X 10" paper...it kept sliding down to the bottom of the board.

A:  I had it stirred in the paint department so that it really mixed it up. I then used it that same day the paint department mixed it so that may help get it more evenly stirred as the paint is thick and tarry. I did noticed small magnetic pieces, but it wasn't as noticeable when I painted the wall. Nothing chunky stayed on the wall. After I painted I got magnets to stick, however heavier ones simply slid down the wall. But majority of mine did stick.

A:  Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer Kit is designed to cover an area of approximately 16 square feet per quart. The magnetism will indeed be stronger with more product on the surface, but only up to a certain point. You will need to calculate how much is needed based on the size of the area that you are covering, and apply the product to meet that in order to get the best performance from the primer.

I stood the board up vertical, and tried to use a magnet to mount an 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper...it slid to the bottom of the board. Save your money, this paint is just about useless...
