A:  IMO, I would say condensation on the inside of grill due to temperature variances. Another guess would be perhaps the bottom vents were open or even slightly open. These grates always rust if the unit is left outdoors. The cooking grate is stainless steel, yet the charcoal grate is just "plated" steel. The plating cooks off and the exposed steel is exposed to the elements. They are cheap to replace.

A:  That's nature. Although metals break down at different rates, they rust. I suggest storing your cleaned grate in your garage. It works for mine. Hope that helps.

A:  How long did it take to rust and how bad? Humidity can do it but the fats from meat can also be very corrosive if left on the grate.

A:  Probably because the top and bottom vents were left open allowing moisture to seep in.

A:  You can but it won’t fit on the top of the grill. It is made for the bottom grate. But if you have a smaller grill, I don’t see why not.

A:  Not in this grill. This sits low in the grill. It is a CHARCOAL grate.. The coals sit on it. The food, or cooking grate sits higher (larger diameter). Home Depot does not always advertise this correctly.

A:  This is 13 1/2" dia. If your original 15 1/4" dia is still intact, it will lay over top. Lay bars at 90 degree and this will prevent small pieces of coals from falling through. Wire to together, and also to the ring. Attatch ubolts, and pull all out as one unit. Visit weber virtual bullet for more info on this mod. Hope this helps.
