LOVE IT! LOOKS WARM AND RICH!!
Originally purchased Olympic Semi-transparent Golden Oak, well.................. it was more of a School Bus Yellow, after getting a refund for it, the best fix was a solid stain. We went with Behr after reading all the reviews and couldn't be happier. Goes on evenly, covered in one coat, and looks so inviting; for a deck that is over 20+ years old. Kinda glad this cluster lead us to the Behr solid stain, we LOVE how it looks!!!

The color chip online and what came in the can were 2 differnet colors. I am going to take the can to HD and ask the paint tech if he can make it match or get close to the color chip.

    Hi bg,

Thank you for reviewing Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Wood Stain & Sealer. I'm sorry to hear about the color issue experienced, as that's definitely not what we want our customers to go through. As it turns out, screen settings can have a big effect on color appearance and the actual stain color may not look exactly the same in person. Because this is a semi-transparent wood stain, the color of the wood also affects the finished look.

Customer satisfaction is very important to us and I encourage you to contact Behr directly for further assistance. We'd love to learn more about your project and find the best way to help.

    Kindest regards,

    Doris Behr

I've used Behr sealant for decades and chose to stick with it for my fence, terrace and pergola "facelift" project, even though the great guy I hired recommended another product from the main competitor. I loved it when he started using Behr ST, was so impressed he said he could see why I wanted to stay with it and that he would start recommending Behr over what he had been recommending! It really transformed my very old, dried and discolored wood to looking almost new!

Hi Chris, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the color did not turn out as expected. The Russet color should not appear red, however, the color of the wood underneath will influence the way the color will turn out. You have the option of applying a solid color stain in a new color to cover it. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our customer care team is happy to help you! -Giovanna Behr
First stain! Will update on 2nd coat
Was worried when I opened the can and it seemed orange. Gave it a stir and the red pops nice! And the solid first coat still leaves a little bit of grain. Will have to do the second coat in semi- transparent!

          Repeat customer again
I've used many stains and they've all let me down. The sun beats down on our back yard so wood doesn't last long. This is the first one that I know won't fade away by next summer.

            Hi Stephen,

Thank you for reviewing Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish. I'm very sorry to hear about the disappointment experienced. As it turns out, the consistency of the paint is meant to be thin and water. For best results, we recommend applying the stain in thin coats. Customer satisfaction is very important to us, and I encourage you to contact Behr directly for further assistance. We'd love to learn more about your experience and find the best way to help.

              So disappointed
Last spring I decided to paint my deck. I used this product and was so proud of the results. However, a few days later, I saw areas that were peeling. I repainted over those areas. Still, as time went on, it was getting worse. I cleaned the deck before painting, took my time, and even painted a second coat to make sure I didn’t miss any spots. This is how my deck looks over all one year later. Can someone tell me what I should do. I’m going to start with pressure washing to get all peeling areas. What can I use to paint over this disasterA?

Hello LindaLL, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry our stain is peeling on your deck like this. I recommend removing any loose coating by sanding or using a pressure washer on a very low setting, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, letting the surface dry, then touching up and recoating across the surface for uniformity. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly for further assistance. One bad Behr product to another….
I bought a house that had a deck, the deck was painted with Behr’s deckover. This product was peeling and flaking off. Not being happy with how the deckover held up. I purchased Behr Premium 5 gallons of Padre Brown (Solid) to redo the deck. I stripped the deck using 3 gallons of Behr’s wood stain and finish stripper following up with the All-In-One wood and deck cleaner. It was a long process to remove the deckover that did stick to the deck. Once the deck was bare wood again I let the deck dry. (2 weeks). I painted the deck in three thin coats waiting the recommend time between coats. The deck had no traffic for the next three days or any rain during those days. The deck looked great but… despite all the prep and following the products directions to the letter… less than 6 months it has started to peel. I can’t even wash the deck with the garden hose without causing more to peel up… definitely a “Premium” product… I wasn’t expecting it to last the noted 5 years…… but 6 months???

Hi Sharris - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the peeling on your deck, especially so soon! To fix the finish, I recommend sanding off the loose stain, spot cleaning the bare areas, then touching up with more stain. If the peeling is happening to most of the surface, the best solution would be to remove the stain, clean the surface, then apply 2 coats at the recommended spread rate to ensure a long-lasting finish. Please feel free to reach out to us directly for further assistance with your project. We'd be happy to help! - Sara Behr
                  It's RED
it's a bit thick, but otherwise fine stain and seal but it's RED. The can itself shows a lightly warm chocolate color, but it's so much more red, it's just awful. We bought this to very specifically to match our existing backyard furniture, having brought in a piece of it and everything, and now our new table is absolutely ruined with an awful ugly cheap red auburn color that matches nothing. I've never had an issue this severe with a color so drastically different from ANY stain or paint before. We've bought Behr for many years but this will be the last. I will be pursuing a refund, but I will never get my time back, and probably the hundreds spent on the table either.

                    Mud staining
I bought this house 2 years ago and have replaced two decks and two docks and used about 7 gallons so far, but I have issues. First of all, mud foot prints from dogs or people do NOT come off easily. I have tried the hose, a broom, a power washer and nothing removes the left over stain from the mud. I have had to resort to multiple passes with a mop and pressure. In addition, it does not seem to be beading up the water as I would expect. Only in very few places does the water bead up, in the majority of the places it just lays there and will later show a water mark. I have followed the directions and can't seem to find a solution. Please Help!!!!! This is making me NUTS!

BEHR Premium SC-142 Cappuccino Solid Color Waterproofing Exterior Wood Stain & Sealer
Color: SC-142 Cappuccino. Just completed a 2 story cabin with basement in the North GA Mountains. Cabin is now 15 years old. Replaced the equivalent of 20 - 16 ft pieces of bad log siding. Caulked everything with DynaFlex Ultra Window, Door, Siding & Trim caulk in Cedar Tan. Used 12 gallons on 3 sides (front, left and right) of this cabin and front deck. Two light coats. Added an 8 ounce container of Bug Juice to each 5 gallon bucket keep bugs and bees away. I did the back wall and deck area in Sikkons ButterNut Semi Transparent because it's been protected from the sun and looked brand new. I like the color and the combination of the ButterNut brown on the basement concrete. That was BEHR Concrete Stain. All said and done I'm very happy with the color. I would not use the color sample from the Internet. Go to the store and look at the colors in the brochure. The Internet is 10 shades different than the actual color. I wanted to avoid a too orange look like the cedar colors offer. I'll report back on how this stain holds up over years. My neighbor just spent $20K on a similar sized cabin with a new ceramic coating. This BEHR Premium Solid Stain says it will last 25 yrs on siding 10 years on Decks. So I have a side by side comparison going between BEHR and the new ceramic coating for longevity.

Looks great! Chatham fog applied a little more on the gray scale
Prepped with the behr cleaning product and did a 100 grit sanding all over afterwards on a 3 year old deck. Looks great after two coats. It applied nicely in 60F weather. The Chatham Fog was slightly grayer than the stock pictures looked but still looks great. One gallon was enough to cover the deck and railings with two coats

                          Extremely frustrated
We spent over $500 on this stain and sealer in one and used it on 2 decks. It looked great for a few weeks. Then Texas got a big snow that covered the decks. However they had been stained well in advance and based off of what we researched from this particular stain should have been fine! They look horrible. I’m so upset and not sure how to remedy this. These decks are a focal point on our property and we spent an entire weekend staining them. The money and time are not something I want to do again.

                          Hi Mereliv76,

Thank you for reviewing Behr Premium Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain. I'm very sorry to hear about the peeling issue experienced after snowfall, as it isn't typical or what we want our customers to go through.

The loose stain can be removed by power washing, sanding, or with a wood stain stripper. After stain removal, the deck can be cleaned with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner. The deck should dry for at least 24 hours before recoating within the recommended temperature (2-32C) and humidity (below 50%) range.

Customer satisfaction is very important to us, and I encourage you to contact Behr directly for further assistance. We'd love to learn more about your project and find the best way to help.

It applied easily, dried relatively quickly and the second coat went on fast. We had approximately 9600 square feet of 6 x 4 boards and used about 8 gallons. The finish was better than we anticipated and our neighbors actually commented on how great the finish looked and said we "must have used a very expensive paint".

Covered our red dock like new!
We purchased our home with a red dock and wanted to cover it to be more neutral. We bought the solid color waterproofing exterior wood stain and sealer in drift gray and love the results. We did two coats to get thin spots using a sprayer. The only prep we did was powerwashing, allowing a day to dry, then spraying the next day.

                              Extremely frustrated
Purchased two 5 gallon buckets to paint 310’ of backyard 6 foot privacy fence. Fence is 5 years old, in good condition with a previous coat of paint. New paint was applied with a Graco sprayer also rented from Home Depot. Knew something wasn’t right when the first 5 gallons only covered about a quarter of the outside only portion of the fence. This stain/seal is thinner than others and though a solid, when dry allows for bleed through of previous paint (even with multiple applications). In the end, after two more trips back to local Home Depot, I had to purchase 25 total gallons of the product to complete the fence project (fence was roughly 4,500 sq feet and can indicates 5 gal will cover 2,000 sq feet—not even close). Worse, upon product completely drying I now have significant bleed through of the old paint color. Meaning I will have to rent the Graco again and re-accomplish the job. (A job that has already cost me $875 in paint and $110 in sprayer rental—plus 10 hours of work) I’d seek out a thicker product that will ensure coverage before purchasing this Behr product.

                                Like the color, but disappointed
We recently had our deck stained by a professional crew and while we like the color, it turned out more like a paint than a semi-transparent. We had just installed a new deck and fence at the beginning of the calendar year and were looking so forward to having it stained and ready to go. The one thing we told the contractor was that we wanted to be able to see grain through the stain, so he suggested the semi-transparent to still help give a little more protection from the full-day sun rather than a fully transparent stain. After he came to check the work of the crew, even he was shocked at how solid the semi-transparent stain looked. He said the crew followed the instructions on the label, but it looks like paint, not a stain. You can see the physical texture of the wood, but not the grain. We're just so disappointed given it's a brand-new deck and it's not at all what we wanted. We had even purchased several stain samples to try out before picking a color, so we felt pretty confident in our choice, only to be disappointed with the final product. Also, the deck is still very tacky, but we're only about 48 hours in and some of the review below say to give it 72 hours, so we'll see.

Hi ENJ926 - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the finish looks more opaque than expected, and the surface feels tacky after 48 hours. Our semi-transparent stain will provide more color to the wood than a transparent finish; however, you should be able to see the wood grain a little after applying 2 thin coats. This product should also feel dry to the touch after 1-2 hours and fully cure after 72 hours. If your deck still feels sticky after 72 hours, we recommend cleaning the surface with soap and water (you can try this in a small test area first). This should reduce or remove the tackiness. If you need further assistance with your project, please don't hesitate to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help! - Sara Behr

To get your project back on track, we'd recommend removing all the peeled and loose stain, cleaning your surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, allowing it to dry for at least 24 hours, and touching up the affected areas. Like another reviewer mentioned, when applied it is more of a cedar red than chocolate even after two coats, but I'm still very happy with it. It's odd that the color turns out that way because the dried stain on the bucket is definitely chocolate. Even so, I'd buy this again, really pleased

In the "One Gallon" Size, You Do Not Get a Gallon
The photo of the "gallon" there is no volume shown on the bottom of the can. When you buy the product your informational sticker states it is a gallon but the can is only 116 fl.oz. which is only 90% of a gallon (128 fl.oz.). Therefore this is !0% more expensive than their advertised price and is pretty shady if you were to ask me. I call the company and was told the issue was getting passed to "higher-ups" and they will call me. I expect a call as much as I expect this stain to last 10yrs on a deck and 25yrs on a fence. Class action suit?

Hi James - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the amount of stain in our one gallon can wasn't as expected. It sounds like you may have purchased a one gallon can of our Deep base which which has 116 oz. of stain in it in order to leave room in the container for colorants. Our Deep base solid stains should not be used without being tinted to a color beforehand, and will hold up to 14 oz. of colorant. Alternatively, our White base cans will typically have 128 oz. of product in the can to allow for up to 2 oz. of colorant to be added. For further assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help. - Sara Behr

put a deck on, let it sit a year, waited for a breezy, sunny summer day to put stain on. Did 2 coats. One year later, peeling, wearing, need to do it again.

Hi Dbmllr - Thank you for reviewing our wood stain. I'm sorry to hear that the finish is peeling and looks worn after a year. To fix, we recommend removing the existing stain, preparing the surface with our wood cleaner, then applying 2 new thin coats for a long-lasting finish. For further assistance with your deck, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We hope to hear from you! - Sara Behr
