Flaked off after 1 yr. on all horizontal surfaces!
The employee recommended this product 100%. It was very hard to apply since it is the consistency of pudding. It can't be applied on wet surfaces obviously, but it also dried way too quickly in any temperature over 80 degrees. After 1 year, IT IS PEALING OFF EVERY "WALKED ON SURFACE"! It cost me over $250, only to have to start over this next year. Will not recommended. (We live in slc Utah)

Hi there, thank you for your review. Sorry to hear that our Advanced DeckOver is peeling off after 1 year. I can understand your disappointment. To fix the issue, I'd recommend removing the coating by scraping, sanding, or power washing at a low level. Clean the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner. And they reapplying either the Advanced DeckOver, or another suggestion is our Premium Solid-Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our customer care team is happy to help you! -Ronald Behr

    Clumpy and off colored
This is supposed to go on smooth but it’s gritty and clumpy. Skins over in absolutely no time. The color is a blueish grey rather than the true grey in the paint sample I chose. Would like a refund

Hi Brannon, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the color did not turn out as expected, and that the coating was clumpy. The Textured Advanced DeckOver is supposed to have a textured when applied, and should not have a smooth finish. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. I purchased Behr Deck Over stain to try and refurbish an older patio that was not well maintained. The Deck Over stain was thicker than I expected and exactly what I needed to fill a lot of the cracks and small gaps in the wood. I used 3 cans of stain for the entire project. The third can was used to put a second coat on any wood that is directly exposed to the sun (not covered by a patio) or where water tends to settle. I feel confident Behr Deck Over has added 5+ years to the life of the deck. I recommended this product to my daughter and we used it on her patio as well. Great Job Behr (and Home Depot paint dept).

      Honest Review - Works great!
Unsolicited review. Works great! Applied July ’21, after lots of rain/snowstorms, still looks good. NO PEELING! Ready to light wash; hardly any dirt, no mildew. Texture stops slipping in wet or snow. Thick material to use but not impossible. Blended all the paint for consistent color. Plan lots of rollers. Prep deep cracks with thick coat, let dry. Order 25% over expected, nearly ran out applying thick, had to thin at end. 1 complaint, it’s hot on the feet during the summer & can’t walk barefoot

        Does not Last! Peels off
I used this product to stain my deck in June of 2021. I prepped my deck by power washing it, sanding it and allowing it adequate time to dry. Spent countless hours applying it to my 20x24 deck, and not even a year later this product is peeling up and looks terrible. Very disappointing!!!! It initially looks really nice, but only lasts a few months. DO NOT Recommend!!!

Hi there, thank you for the review. Sorry to hear that the Advanced Deckover is peeling off your deck in less than a year. I can understand your disappointment. To fix the issue, I'd recommend removing the coating by sanding or scraping and then cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Cleaner then apply two coats of the Advanced Deckover. Saved 21 Yr Old Dock. No Peeling 2 Yrs Later
Saved 21 yr old dock. I was VERY skeptical of Behr Deckover after reading the nightmarish reviews, but I'm glad I didn't listen. I applied the Deckover in 06/2020, and it's still going strong. No peeling whatsoever. I used the Behr prep product & lightly pressure washed / brushed the surface. Waited days til the dock was BONE DRY, and applied the Deckover with a brush to get into all the cracks and then used a roller for broad application then repeated. Buy more product than the calculator says!

            Bullet proof
I'm really surprised at some of these reviews. I just bought a house with the deck covered in this stuff and I've seen ice and snow so far like the previous owners and this stuff is legit. it's almost hard to tell it's wood decking it has great traction and cleans up well and easy. Preparation and application are key, do it right and you'll be satisfied.

                Great for concrete patios!
Patio had terrible cracks & patches. We only did 1 coat in Nov 2020; just did a 2nd coat Nov 2021. I found using a brush to cover an area & then the rec roller to smooth this out works best. If you try to retouch area that is still drying, it does leave streaks. We have 2 dogs & a small yard; the paint has not chipped or flaked.

                  This stuff is crap
If I could give a -0, I would. It is a waste of time and money to use. I applied as instructed and even talked with Behr rep at HD before purchasing. Our 16x30 deck is basically ruined now. It is rotting beneath this coating. As others have stated no need to rent equipment to remove. My grandson thinks it's a game to peal it off. He tries to see how large a sheet can be removed. When I first put it on I thought it was great, it covered cracks and the deck was cool to walk on bare footed. Beware of Behr Deck Over. Wish I had read the reviews.

Much better than replacing your deck!
We have a deck that was weathered and in poor shape. Main deck, 2 landings and 15 stairs, came to about 300 ft². We wanted texture, so we used the Behr extra textured DeckOver roller cover. All told, it took us a 5 gallon bucket and 4 individual gallons.

Coverage of this product is not even close to what they claim
The coverage claim on this product is totally out of wack. I have used almost a full 5 gallon bucket on my 336 square foot deck with only 1 coat. The product label says that the 5 gallon bucket will cover up to 375 square feet with 2 coats. That is not even close to what it will cover. Buyers beware in order to complete your project you will have to buy 3 to 4 times the amount that you may need.

Excellent Product - Provided Results Beyond my Expectations
Our home is nearing the 20-year mark and the our deck is close to that age. The decking had became very weathered and in need of some attention. Given the recent shortages on lumber and skyrocketed high prices, I did a lot of research on restoration type coatings. I have been using Behr paint for my interior painting needs for many years and swear by them. So, I chose the Behr Advanced DeckOver product. My wife and I have 3 active kids and two large retriever dogs, so I wanted something that would hold up well. I selected the textured finish and used the special extra texture Behr rollers for a more aggressive finish. After being on all summer, I can say that I'm blown away by this product. It has taken all the abuse my kids and dogs can dish out and has held up perfectly. This product does take a little more effort in prep than a traditional deck stain product; I suspect most people that have given this product an unfavorable review didn't follow the prep requirements as they should have. I used a recommended deck cleaner and pressure washed my deck twice. I sanded a few areas and was certain to fill all screw holes/cracks before rollering out the first coat. I also followed all timelines as stated in the directions and made certain the temperature and humidity were inline with the requirements also. The only thing I'd recommend is wearing old shoes/clothes if you go with the extra texture roller as there is definitely some "overspray". My boots now have a really interesting red splash pattern to them :-) Beyond being very durable, I love the look/finish of this product. The screw holes are nearly invisible, which gives your deck a similar appearance of a composite surface, at the fraction of the cost. Plus, this doesn't hold the heat like some of those products do. I would highly recommend this product to anyone with a traditional wood deck. Great product Home Depot!!

Started peeling in spots. I tried to take the rest up with a scrapper and power washer. Deck was damaged and rotten. I had a perfectly good deck a year ago now I will have to replace the whole thing with new boards

                          Deck is Rotting
Applied the paint in April and its flaking and peeling by July. This wouldn't be so bad but the parts that aren't flaking are rotting from the inside out due to water retention. I peeled some paint off days after it has rained and the wood is still wet. It is likely more affordable for me to replace my deck than to try and remove this product and salvage anything. Absolutely do not use this product.

                            WARNING
I used DeckOver on my 1800 sq ft deck last year after it was recommended by a Home Depot employee. The paint FAILED all over on flat long boards, spindles, bracing etc. Now I am forced to strip every square in physically. Three different deck refinishing companies have tried various chemical products to remove the DeckOver. One gentleman called the stripper product Help Desks only to be told their products and every other one on the market, except caustic substances, would not do much at all. We tried leaving the chemicals a lot longer than prescribed and using a power washer for a couple hours the product stood firm. Now I am stuck stripping every square inch I can with an angle grinder, various detail sanders and of course scraping loose product with a putty knife.

Hello Dynwrld, thank you for your review. I’m so sorry our DeckOver is failing across your deck and has been difficult to remove. This isn’t the experience we want for our customers. To remove the DeckOver, I recommend sanding with 40-60 grit sandpaper. Or, if you’re going to apply a new solid color coating, any remaining DeckOver that’s adhering well can be topcoated and doesn’t need to be removed. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly for further assistance. This paint product is hands down the very best quality outdoor paint I've ever used. I first tried it over 5 years ago on my large boathouse decking, it saved me hundreds of dollars due to the fact I didn't have to replace a lot of the old wood that had been on there 15 + years. About 2 months ago I started using it for that same deck plus 1200 sq feet of porches, including all the railings, all my sidewalks, all the house & garage trim, some fencing, and my floating dock, ect.

                              Much Better Than Expected
June 2017, first photo. My pressure treated wood pool deck was 15 years old. Power washed all surfaces and lightly sanded any rough, splintered, or fuzzy surfaces. Painted (brush) all railing surfaces (vertical & some horizontal) with a single coat. Top rails and step rails two coats. But NOT the floor and stairs. Got lazy after brushing on the first coat and should have rolled out the second but alas, I didn't. Floor and steps lasted about two seasons and then started to peel. So, this year instead of repainting floor (and rails) I replaced them with composite decking material. (Remember this is a pool deck) Second photo (July 2021) shows the new composite floor and rail BUT I want you to focus on the existing vertical deck surfaces which were painted four years ago. They look like they were painted yesterday. People ask if I recently repainted the deck. Deck Over has held up incredibly well on those surfaces, and I can only wonder if I had rolled on that second coat to the floor and steps if they, in fact, may have lasted longer before peeling. I'm currently using Deck Over again to repeat the process on my homes side deck.

                                  Premature Wood Rot
We have two decks that were built the same time 4 years ago. One one we put Thompson Water Seal and the other (our larger deck) we added the Deckover product. The larger deck is now rotten where the other deck is still in great shape. As you can see in the photo, all moisture is trapped in the wood. And before you ask, I’m a builder and yes, I let my dry out plenty before adding this Product.

                                    Don't, don't, don't buy this!!!
Bought this product and had high hopes for it. Followed all the instructions. As others have said it, it is very, very thick and the coverage does not go as far as they say it does. It took me over 3 days to do my deck. It looked awesome when I was finished! Within a few months, it started to peel as others said. OK, no big deal, I did touch-ups and it was all good. Then it started peeling more and I noticed how wet the deck was underneath it (see pictures). As others have said, it traps the moisture in and has been slowly rotting my deck. This expensive project has turned into a huge mess that is going to cost a lot of money to now fix. If I could give it 0 stars I would.

After sanding, using deck cleaning wash prep and waiting the appropriate 2 days for deck to dry, I proceeded to paint. It is tough to rolls it thick but gave great coverage. I was thrilled, until spring. The paint peeled off in strips, blistered and is worse looking than when I started. Horrible to sand off so I can start over.. DO NOT use this product. It even comes off the railing onto bare skin. Never actually adhered to the wood, just sat on top waiting to blister

Crunchy peanutbutter would have been better choice
Don't be me. Don't read all the bad reviews and think you can make it work. This is seriously the worst product I have ever had the misfortune to use. It isn't oatmeal. It's thick, crunchy peanutbutter that goes on just the same. I have a very large deck and I bought all the recommended rollers and did everything according to directions. I started on the rails and knew I was in trouble, but I didn't stop. I was certain I could make it work. It looks like crap. I used every painting tool on the market to try and make this a smooth finish like it states it is. I did have some luck using a little edging tool and painstakingly smoothing a very thin layer over the wood. But I had to get a new pad every fifteen minutes or so because this garbage paint gets hard, thick and chunky within minutes of it being exposed to the air. Then you get those awesome super chunks that do not smooth out. You can't sand them away. You can't peel them away without tearing up the wood. I hate this stuff. I've finally called mercy. The front portion of my deck is trashed with this paint. I'm going to do something I hate and buy another paint to finish the other two sides, because this is just a horrible disaster. And just for those who actually want a gray shade, this isn't it. It's white. I'm not a novice painter. I know what I'm doing. This is truly just a horrible product. Family happened to come over and noticed the small section I started and laughed. They just replaced their deck this year because the person that owned the house before them put this on their deck. It is THAT bad. Once it's on, it's forever. I used a nonshedding, 3/8 nap roller to try and get a smooth finish. It didn't work. It's just so bad. Heed the warnings and find something else.

Hello JCAJ, thank you for your review. I’m so sorry the paint was so thick and wouldn't go on smooth and that the color wasn't right. Our Smooth DeckOver will be thicker than a typical paint consistency, but shouldn't be so thick and chunky that it can't be applied with the recommended application tools like a roller. I recommend sanding smooth any chunks left on the surface with 180-240 grit sandpaper, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, letting the surface dry, then touching up and recoating with a new container of DeckOver. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly for further assistance with this. It took me weeks to prepare my deck. Replaced cedar boards that were bad, sanded the entire deck, sunk any screw heads that were too high, filled every crack and screw location with Bondo for wood, washed and cleaned the deck twice before applying DeckOver. Waited longer than recommended after washing or rain before applying DeckOver. Looked great for 8 days, and then it started bubbling/blistering. I am extremely disappointed !

                                              Hi bubba,

Thank you for reviewing Behr DeckOver. I'm very sorry to hear about the bubbling issue experienced so soon after application, as that's not typical or what we want our customers to go through. The loose DeckOver can be removed with a floor sander/grinder. Home Depot usually has great options available. After removing the loose areas and cleaning with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner, the surface should dry for at least 24 hours in dry weather before recoating. Customer satisfaction is very important to us and I encourage you to contact Behr directly for further assistance. We'd love to learn more about your project and find the best way to help.

                                              Kindest regards,

                                              Awful!
Wasted money!! Super thick, won’t pick up on recommended roller nor spread evenly. Tried two different rollers with no success. The area that I painted looks awful! The stuff was drying in the pan before I could even get it on the patio. Can’t believe I wasted an entire Saturday trying to get this to spread.

                                              Hi 595,

Thank you for reviewing Behr DeckOver Textured. I'm very sorry to hear that the consistency was very thick and drying. The normal consistency should feel like spreadable peanut butter. Customer satisfaction is very important to us and I encourage you to contact Behr directly for further assistance. We'd love to learn more about your project and find the best way to help.
