Good instructions about extreme stiring needed and cleanup. Works very well! Thick paint and should be applied on a very smooth surface or thinned to ensure final smooth coat.

Let's talk about this! Each can of Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer is intended to coat up to 16 square feet with the recommended 3 coats. However, more coats can be applied if desired. Larger surfaces will require additional cans to ensure the full effect. We also recommend only topcoating this product with a latex paint and no more than two coats of that should be applied.

Does not work
I followed the instructions completely, put on 3 coats, and there wasn't even a hint that a magnet would stick to it. I might as well have tried to stick a magnet to a piece of wood. Complete waste of time and money.

Something is amiss here! Our Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer contains Magnetite, which is an iron ore mineral that attracts magnets. The thickness of the Magnetic Primer is key to a successful application, and one quart is enough primer to apply three coats at the required thickness to a 4x4' surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum
    Don’t use roller
The directions recommend using a paint roller—don’t. The metallic/magnetic element soaks into to roller-sponge and as you dip more attracts into the roller. Soon the magnetic strength in the roller becomes so strong that it pulls the primer up off the surface—making it bumpy not smooth. Now i have to choose between having a bumpy chalk-board, or starting all over with new materials.

That's odd! To ensure the best results, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer with a foam roller designed to give a smooth finish. We also recommend waiting at least 30 minutes between coats.

Make sure to mix very well before opening it. Once opened, make sure to constantly mix it while its being used. The minerals will settle to the bottom if you leave it. Its magnetic as well so mixing will be harder than other paints. I highly recommend using the paint shaker they offer at the stores. Use a dense FOAM roller to apply. Use disposable gloves. Use splash proof goggles. Use a respirator mask. Protect nearby areas with disposable covers (newspapers, tape etc). Apply in well ventilated area. If you want to clean, it recommends a xylene paint cleaner (I do not recommend using xylene) If you really want to clean using xylene, please make sure to research it before buying. Instead of trying to clean with xylene, I recommend using every last drop of the primer. Then letting the primer completely dry out wherever it is (roller/ can/ tray/ newspapers), and throw it away. If you have a lot of primer left in the can, take it to your local recycling center.

        Bad Product
Coverage is really bad on a foam roller. Project took a long time and it dried into a chalky consistency that was a mess to paint over. The cherry on top is that it’s too weak to hold up a small magnet. Don’t waste your time.

Let's see what we can figure out Brian! Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnet Primer is a base coat that allows you to create a surface that attracts magnets almost anywhere. Apply at least 3 coats of primer and no more than 2 coats of top coat for maximum attraction. Rare earth magnets adhere best to treated surface.

Let's see what we can figure out! Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer is a base coat that allows you to create a surface that attracts magnets almost anywhere. For best results, shake can in an electric shaker in the paint department or stir paint thoroughly for at least 10 minutes, scraping the bottom of the can. Stir to a smooth, lump free consistency and stir regularly during application. Apply at least 3 coats of primer and no more than 2 coats of top coat for maximum attraction. Rare earth magnets adhere best to treated surface.

This thing is thick, the instructions says mix well and we did but didn’t say keep mixing while you applied it. It ended up being a rough surface instead of a nice one. Anyway the magnetic property works fine.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Melissa! To ensure a smooth finish with Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer, a good quality synthetic brush, 1/4”-3/8” nap roller or a foam roller designed to give a smooth finish needs to be used.

          Fun Crafting With My Daughter
Made some great craft projects with my daughter. We bought frames with large boarders, painted the Rust-Oleum Specialty 30 oz. Dark Gray Magnetic Primer on. Using a roller we rolled out 3 thick coats, letting it dry real well in between each coat. It was stirred real well before each coat, it does take time to stir it, scrapping the insides of the can getting it mixed real well. At first it seemed gritty, but it dries pretty smooth. We did paint a color over the magnetic primer also. We made some cute magnets and they did stick pretty well. And it held a piece of paper onto it.

We appreciate your feedback, Lou! For the best results, it is essential that at least 3 coats of Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer is applied. A smoother surface will also provide for a better finish and surface for the magnets to stick to.

Let's see what we can figure out! Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer is a dark gray base coat designed to transform a simple surface to one that attracts magnets. Be sure to mix thoroughly to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed, also stir thoroughly regularly during application. Use a foam roller designed to give a smooth finish. Apply the primer with an up and down motion and
work the area to give the smoothest finish. Three coats are recommended, waiting 30 minutes between coats. A smooth uniform surface will provide for stronger magnetic attraction.

            It's not your old refrigerator
If you're expecting magnets to stick to it like a piece of metal then you'll be disappointed. That being said, things like kids alphabet magnets will hold to it with no problem. As some have stated in their reviews, you might get a can that has separated and has thick "chunks". Getting those chunks to dissolve back into solution is the key and it takes lots of stirring...like maybe 10-15 minutes. I used a regular paint stick stirrer but a screw driver followed by the paint stick might work best. Roll it on with a foam roller. Take your time, this stuff isn't as easy to work with as paint or regular primer. FWIW I applied 4 coats and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome, especially since I read the reviews ahead of time and still decided to try it.

              not quite
I bought to use in my classroom. It was so thick it was hard to stir and make smooth. Once that was done I followed the directions completely, 4 coats. It dried well, was somewhat magnetic, but once the chalkboard paint was applied it lost all magnetic qualities.

                Don’t Waste Your Money
I did everything the instructions said. I had to dump the paint out in a large bucket and mix it with a drill mixer because the metal was so stuck that after 20 mins trying to mix the paint in the paint can I gave up and switched to the bucket. Still, after painting a few feet I noticed that all the metal shavings were sticking to my foam roller rather than the wall. I switched to a regular roller and after a few swipes the same thing happened. After letting it dry I tried a few different magnets and only the strongest stuck...and that one failed once I tried to put 1 piece of paper under it. Don’t waste your money.

We are just as surprised to hear this happened, and is unique behavior of the Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer. We do recommend mixing it well in order to disperse the magnetic properties that are in the product. It sounds as though the product may have settled possibly, but we would like to investigate this further. It is the thickness of tar and creates a super rough texture on doors. I was actually trying to create a magnetic chalkboard surface on my children's bedroom doors. For all of the hassle and tediousnes in the process, I would have been better off buying pre-made magnetic chalkboards and mounting them to the doors. The surface is magnetic and attracting magnets, though.
