The current economy may account for some of the cost, but more significant is the manufacturing cost difference between high-volume and low-volume production, i.e., the more you make of something, the lower the manufacturing cost. Replacement "parts" for any appliance always seem expensive relative to the cost of the appliance itself. Think how much a car would cost if all the pieces were purchased separately!
