I've used both the water based and the oil based Varathane Interior spray, and I found the oil based far superior. It sprays much more evenly, and coats more smoothly. The only issue is the lingering odor, so good ventilation and a mask are a must.

Lays out nice, very slow to tack off. Even after 12-18 hours light sanding for recoat produces pilling.

Let's see what we can figure out. Varathane Oil Based Polyurethane Spray can only be applied over stained wood after the stain has thoroughly dried, if the stain has not dried, the polyurethane will not dry. All excess stain must be wiped from the surface, it cannot be allowed to dry on top of the wood. Oh no, that's not something we like to hear. After vigorously shaking Varathane Oil Based Polyurethane Spray prior to use, then fully depressing the spray nozzle, the spray is typically excellent. Goes on nice and even. Especially great for carved details...
Goes on nice and even. Especially great for carved details as it easily gets in all the tight little spaces. Overall happy with the final results.

Not worth the effort to use again. Product spits and leaves bubbles.
Prefer to have used the older Mini wax urithane.

Yikes, Walter! Please keep in mind that it'll be important to continuously shake the Rust-Oleum Varathane Polyurethane Spray to ensure the pigments are broken up while spraying. This will help make sure the product doesn't get stuck in the stem or nozzle, during use. Try shaking just a little more, and you should be all set. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Did not spray consistently. Not a solid pattern. Kinda spit...
Did not spray consistently. Not a solid pattern. Kinda spit and sputtered. A slight angle from the can being used vertical made it worse. Haven't encountered to many applications where vertical surface is coated. Made it difficult to spray consistently onto a flat surface.

So-so
This product requires an outrageous amount of shaking for it to work as claimed. Sometimes it can't be shaken enough. At times it comes out too thin, like it's just the propellant, and at times it comes out too thick and it runs with even the slightest spraying. I'd say it works as claimed about 66% of the time. I'm giving it three stars because when it works, it works well. Give it a try, but don't be afraid to shop around.
