    Frequently Asked Questions

    Heating & Cooling 101
    Why do system breakdowns occur?
The most common cause of system breakdowns for HVAC units is improper maintenance of the air filters. Ensure you change them regularly to avoid inefficient operation.
What is the average life expectancy of an air conditioning system?
Most systems have a lifetime of 10 to 20 years. As your equipment gets older, its efficiency can decrease dramatically. You may notice that it gets noisier and needs repairs more often. When a unit begins to show its age, you have two choices: overhaul the system or replace it. Because heating and air conditioning technology improves over time, a unit designed with newer, more energy-efficient equipment makes sense, especially if your system is 10 or more years old. Our authorized air conditioning and heating professionals can provide an in-home estimate on the cost of a new system as well as a payback schedule that will show you how much money your newer, more efficient system will save you in utility bills.
Do I need to have my ductwork replaced?
Industry experts estimate that as many as 70% of all homes with central air have poorly installed ductwork. Ducts that are not properly sealed or insulated fail to get the hot or cool air where you want it efficiently, therefore costing you money. Before you invest in a new system, make sure a heating and air conditioning professional checks your ducts and includes specific recommendations in their proposal to you. This can normally be done as part of your in-home estimate. Don't spend the money on a new, super-efficient system unless you are sure those efficiency gains won't be lost by poor ductwork.
What components improve indoor air quality?
There are 4 main components to improve air quality:

    1. Germicidal UV Light uses UV technology to continuously sterilize and purify the indoor air you breathe and significantly reduce environmental stresses to your immune system.
    2. A Central Humidifier maintains the proper level of moisture in your home, which reduces static electricity and helps you feel warmer in winter and more comfortable year-round.
    3. Energy Recover Ventilators bring fresh outside air into your home while expelling stale air.
    4. An Electronic Air Cleaner is an additional filtration intended to reduce airborne allergens.
Will a bigger heating or air conditioning unit perform better?
No, you don't want your heating or cooling system to be too large. Air conditioners control the comfort level in your home by cooling the air and by removing humidity. An oversized air conditioner can cool your home faster, but it will use more energy and will not remove humidity adequately. In addition, your existing ductwork may not be able to support the airflow of a larger system.

A unit that is too big for your home will have short-run cycles. It can take only a short time to cool the air, but the unit shuts off before enough air blows across the indoor coil where moisture condenses into water and drains from your system. Too much moisture left in the air can lead to mold and mildew problems.

These short-run cycles also mean your system starts and stops more often, which uses more energy and causes a lot of wear and tear. An air conditioner operates more efficiently during long-run cycles. The same holds true with heating systems. An oversized furnace can warm the house quicker, but it uses more fuel and causes greater temperature swings in the home.
What size HVAC system do I need for my home?
To get understand what what size heating or AC unit you need, your best option is to determine your home's Manual J calculation. The Manual J calculation takes into consideration your home's square footage, your ductwork, the climate, and a number of other factors when deciding how many BTUs are necessary to properly heat or cool your home. The easiest way to get a Manual J calculation is to ask your local utility company for an energy audit, or by contacting our local HVAC experts.

Alternatively, you could get a broad idea of what you need by measuring your home's square footage. For instance, a home of around 2,000 sq. feet may require around 60,000 BTUs. However, square footage isn't the whole story. To ensure you get the right size equipment, it's best to consult with local HVAC experts.
    Our Installation Service
    What's included?
We'll pair you with a fully vetted local, authorized service provider, who will come out to your home and assess your needs. They'll help you choose the best heating and cooling solution for your home and budget, then order the products for you and set up an installation date. During the install appointment, our local service provider will dispose of the old unit free of charge. If you're not sure how to choose an HVAC service provider, read our guide.
Can you give me an estimate on a new system without an in-home consultation?
No, we cannot provide a quote over the phone, as pricing varies based on your needs and the unique conditions in your home. In order to size your system properly, a detailed load calculation must be performed by a qualified service provider. Installing an oversized or undersized unit may result in higher utility bills and an inefficient heating or cooling system.
Will the work be completed to code with any required permits?
Yes, our service providers will install to local code and follow required permitting procedures. Permit requirements vary by location, and some municipalities do require a permit. Your Home Depot authorized service provider will obtain a permit if it’s required.
Does The Home Depot offer financing options?
Yes, The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card provides special financing on purchases $299 or more every day. You can view and pay your account online and enjoy easy returns year-round.
    Saving Money
How can I lower my utility bills?
High efficiency ratings can add up to lower utility bills. Air conditioner efficiency is measured in SEERs. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit, and the greater the utility-cost savings you can potentially pocket.
How can I find out if I am spending too much on heating and air conditioning for my home?
Start with your utility company; they can help a great deal. Comparing previous bills isn't always a good measure, as the weather is never exactly the same month to month. Instead, if you take your energy bill and divide it by the square footage of livable space in your home, don't count areas like unfinished garages or basements — you can calculate how much you are spending to heat or cool each square foot of your home. Your energy provider can tell you what the average cost per square foot is in your region for that same period of time so you can compare apples to apples.
Can I just replace the outdoor unit on an older air conditioning system to save money?
Yes, you can replace just the outdoor unit to save money, provided it is properly matched with your existing indoor equipment to ensure system compatibility. Because indoor HVAC components typically have a longer lifespan than outdoor units, a partial replacement may be a viable option. To guarantee peak performance and full warranty coverage, we recommend having a Home Depot certified technician verify that the new outdoor unit is a certified match for your current indoor system.
Are there any tax credits on heating and air conditioning?
If you purchase certain energy-efficient products or a renewable energy heating and cooling system for your home, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit. ENERGY STAR distinguishes energy-efficient products.
What is your price match policy?

Count on getting competitive HVAC pricing, every time. When serving customers, our Authorized Service Providers are committed to offering a competitive price for “like for like” product and installation.

    How It Works:

If you receive a written quote on “like for like” HVAC system installation from a licensed and insured HVAC contractor that is a lower price than your written quote from The Home Depot, we’ll match that price.

To Qualify for a Price Match:

Present the written or email quote from a licensed and insured HVAC contractor to the authorized Home Depot Service Provider, dated within 30 days of the original Home Depot Quote and prior to system installation. The quote must meet the “like for like” criteria. The Provider has the final authority to determine if the quote qualifies for the price match based on the "like for like" criteria below. Price-matching is applicable only to quotes specifically for the same customer, address, and application quoted by The Home Depot and cannot be combined with other discounts or special offers. Price-matching is limited to one adjustment per customer order. Additional Restrictions may apply and vary by market. Policy may be adjusted to comply with local or state regulations.

    "Like for Like” Requirements:

For the price match to apply, the competitor’s products and services must be of equal quality and specifications to our own. This includes:

    • Competitive quote must include permit (where required), and all required code updates
    • Same/like equipment size/capacity, efficiency, product tier
    • Same/like accessories such as thermostat and IAQ products
    • Same/like installation components (electrical, pad, refrigerant line, duct work, returns, safety features, etc.)
    • Same/like product and labor warranty & guarantees and terms of service (Warranties, if self-insured must meet local, state and federal requirements).

      Price Match Excludes:

    • Written quotes not within 30 days of the original Home Depot Quote
    • Quotes received verbally
    • Quotes from unlicensed contractors
    • Prices obtained strictly from an advertisement
    • Price match requests received after installation
    • Matching of financing offers or credit terms not available through The Home Depot
    • Product that is not of a comparable quality, type or specifications

The tech was amazing but the company is awful. They quoted $2600 for the job. I called a smaller local hvac company who did the job for $789. I cant believe home depot would work with a company who would screw over customers with abhorrent and ridiculous prices. I will never use home depot again because we thought the diagnosis fee would be rolled into the j9b but when the quote is over 300% of what the job should be then we feel taken advantage of for a quick diagnosis fee when other companies would have done it cheaper. I really feel slighted by the ARS company and home depot

Poor communication from payment to install. Had great difficulty with getting contract copy, and financing link. Tried calling customer service for over an hour and no one had answers. When follow up call came in, customer service was rude claiming it wasn?t a problem on their end.

    Air Purification

    Air Purification

Environmental factors from outside—and even inside—your home can cause a buildup of air pollutants like moisture, odors, pollen, smoke, mold, fine particles from floors and furniture, pet dander, germs, bacteria and viruses. Our local background-checked and insured service providers are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to provide an air quality evaluation that helps to identify your specific air quality issues and recommend an indoor air quality solution to help clear the air in your home of impurities.

We offer a variety of products like air purifiers, air cleaners, ventilators, humidifiers, dehumidifiers and UV lights to help reduce airborne particles and organisms, optimize humidity levels, provide whole-home ventilation and more.

Our whole-home air purification system is installed in the ductwork of the existing air conditioning/heating system and penetrates and kills microbials not only in the air, but also on surfaces. The indoor air quality system also uses ionization, causing particles to coagulate—or stick together—making them bigger and easier for your filter to catch, and thus removing more airborne particulates and allergens.

    Boilers

    Boiler Installation

Many older homes — especially those in the northeast — are equipped with steam boilers to provide heat when it’s cold outside.

Also called a gas boiler or heat exchanger, this device uses natural gas or propane for power and acts as a water heater. As hot water is produced, steam is released into pipes throughout the home, providing radiant heat. The heat from the steam is typically dispersed through a radiator, under-floor heating, or baseboard heating.

There are many different types of boilers. Stainless steel and cast iron water boilers are among the most common. Today's modern boilers operate with high efficiency, often as high as 98.5%, meaning there’s minimal wasted energy. It’s important to note, however, that this type of heating is not as fast as forced air heating. It takes time for the water to boil before the resulting steam can deliver warmth throughout your home.

    Central A/C

    Central Air Conditioning Installation

Modern central air conditioners are designed to maximize seasonal energy efficiency, saving you money on energy costs while still providing the cool air you need on hot days. Depending on the size of your home, you may have a single AC installation, or you may have a split system with multiple units, each cooling different parts of your home.

A central air conditioning system works by bringing in outside air to be cooled. An air handler then regulates the dispersal of cool air to the vents throughout your home.

Depending on your particular air conditioning system, it may also function as a heat pump, reversing the process in the winter to deliver heat when you need it. This lets you make the most of a single system to handle all your heating and cooling needs.

    Mini Splits

    Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner

A mini split air conditioner is an alternative to a traditional central air system. If your home is not already equipped with air conditioning ducts, installing them can be expensive. Mini-split systems are a budget-friendly option that cost less to operate, saving you even more money.

A ductless mini split system has one primary indoor unit that controls all of the output points. Depending on the scale of your mini split, it can likely provide cooling for up to four areas of your home. The more rooms you need cooled, the more expensive the system will be.

Some split systems have a heat pump that enables them to become an all-in-one heating and cooling system. This way they offer cooling in the hot summer months and heat when temperatures drop during the winter.

    Evaporative Coolers

    Evaporative Cooler Installation

Evaporative cooling is a unique alternative to traditional central air conditioning systems. Also called swamp coolers or wet air coolers, evaporative coolers reduce air temperature through the evaporation of water.

This simple process provides efficient cooling: an evaporative cooler uses up to 75% less power than traditional air conditioners. The cooling power of an evaporative cooler is measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm), with higher numbers representing greater cooling capabilities.

The size of your home helps determine if evaporative cooling is right for you. If your home is several thousand square feet, you may need multiple units to cool every room, particularly if you live in an especially hot area. If you live in an apartment or condo, a portable evaporative cooler will likely meet your needs.

    Fan Coil

    Fan Coil Unit Installation

A fan coil unit is an essential component of your heating and air conditioning system. It consists of a fan and a heating and cooling exchanger coil. As the coil heats or cools air within the system, the fan pushes air through the system and into your home.

It’s essential to periodically replace the fan coil to keep your air conditioning and heating working properly. Depending on the brand and style of your existing system, there are a variety of fan coil styles and configurations to choose from.

It also helps to clean the fan housing occasionally to prevent dust and other debris from building up on the fan blades, which can decrease the efficiency of your system and increase your energy costs.

    Furnace

    Furnace Replacement

Furnaces provide heat during the winter months, and most commonly come in gas or electric models. Electric furnaces generate heat internally, while gas furnaces burn natural gas to create heat. Although less common, some oil furnaces are still in use. You may also have a heat exchanger, heat pump, or other variation.

Today's furnaces offer more energy efficiency than their predecessors. High-efficiency models, as determined by their Energy Star ratings, can help you save money on energy costs. Many furnaces available today offer variable-speed settings, letting you customize your heating even further.

    Schedule an Appointment

    7 / 12
    Heat Pump

    Heat Pump Installation

Heat pumps are unique compared to other air conditioners. Instead of creating cool air to blow into your home, a heat pump removes heat from the air inside and transfers it outside. During the winter, you can switch the direction of the heat pump to bring in warmth.

This type of heating and cooling system uses electricity to operate and is typically more energy efficient than other types. To determine the energy efficiency of a particular heat pump, look for the Energy Star rating. Energy efficiency is measured in HSPF, which compares the amount of heat produced to the energy used to create it. Look for an HSPF of 8 or higher if energy efficiency is your main concern.

While heat pumps save you money on energy over time, they can be more costly to install.

    Package Units

    Package Unit Replacement

Package units combine air conditioning and heating into a single appliance so you won’t need both an air conditioning unit and separate furnace. This is perfect for small homes or homes without an attic to house a full-sized furnace.

Package units give you multiple options. In addition to the air conditioner, you can choose a heat pump, gas furnace or electric heating, depending on your needs and preferences. Heat pumps tend to be more efficient, but also more costly up front. Gas heating can save you money, but strains natural resources compared to electric heat.

    Thermostats

    Thermostat Installation

A thermostat measures the temperature inside your home and triggers your air conditioner or heater to turn on and adjust the air to a set, desired temperature.

Basic thermostats allow you to set a single temperature, but you can also choose an advanced thermostat with more features:

    • Digital thermostats offer exact precision for your chosen temperature.
    • Programmable thermostats, like some options from Honeywell, allow you to configure multiple temperatures throughout the day.
    • Smart thermostats, like the Nest, complement a smart home and learn your preferences over time to manage temperature settings for you. The Nest even accommodates changing weather conditions.
    • Wi-Fi thermostats let you control your temperature settings from a convenient mobile app.

    Ventilation

    Ventilation System Installation

Ventilation is a vital component of any air conditioning system. Ventilation prevents refrigerant chemicals or motor exhaust from diminishing your indoor air quality. With proper ventilation, these harmful fumes filter outside and don’t impact the air you breathe inside your home.

Ventilation systems are already in most homes, and especially those with air conditioners. But if your home wasn't built with one, ventilation systems can be added. Ventilation systems also need repairs from time to time, so it helps to understand the various options available to you.

We want to help you have fresh air throughout your home all year long. We'll be happy to help you identify what your ventilation system requires or what you'll need to have a new system installed.

    Wall Heaters

    Wall Heater Replacement

Though many homes today are built with ducted systems, older homes were often built without them. Because central air ducts can be costly to install, many people turn to wall heaters, wall air conditioners, or window air conditioners for their HVAC needs instead.

These types of heating and air conditioning units are much more affordable to install than central HVAC systems and don't require major renovations. Space heaters and electric wall heaters can provide added warmth as needed. When it's hot outside, a portable air conditioner can help keep you cool in any room of your home. To help you save money on energy costs, choose an energy-efficient machine based on the Energy Star rating.
