I used this shovel for moving sand while constructing a paving block patio. It's been very helpful for moving piles of sand and also levelling areas preliminary to screeding the surface and laying pavers. The newly purchased is a replacement for one with a broken handle - to get 5 stars it would need a fiberglass handle that wouldn't deteriorate with age and weather.

Solid shovel

Not much to say about a shovel. Pretty good price and did what I needed it to do. Had a real messy clean up after the last rain. Nothing works better than a square shovel for that job. Made in USA is a plus.

Well made. I used it to move two tons of crushed stone. Still like new.

does the job but too heavy for female. I am 5'2" and in good shape, strong.

Price was good for the quality of item you get. Just remember if you want it sharp you have to sharpen it yourself.

Comparing Ames to HDX. Ames is made in USA, HDX is Chinese, I want to buy USA whenever possible. Every Ames shovel (USA) I picked off the rack was loosely mounted on the handle and is likely to be a problem down the road. The HDX (China) was solidly mounted to the handle. Ames has a bigger footrest and a 15 year warranty and cost about $5. more. The HDX has a smaller footrest and only a 5 year warranty. I would normally rate the Ames a better buy if it wasn't for the loose shovel mounting but I can't. Might be just a bad lot of Ames shovels, their quality control should wake up. I would say the HDX is probably the better choice this time.

Really pleased with this square point shovel. It is nicely constructed of substantial materials - a nice weighty (but not too heavy) shovel. It has a solid wood handle - I tend to prefer the solid wood handles over the fiberglass or other alternatives. Great for heavier-duty shoveling, I like to use the square point shovel for any time I'm having to shovel / scoop out an area with corners. Great in the garden.

this is a good heavy duty shovel. The metal piece is stiff and handles tough dirt and rocks. The foot piece is wider than most shovels which keeps it from being so rough on the bottom of your foot. The covered handle makes for a good grip even when i have sweat or water all over it. It is slightly heavier as far as weight goes. The shovel is well made though and i plan to use for a long time.

Finally got tire of my spoon shaped long handled shovel, Wanted a square one when doing sand and sandy dirt. This shovel fit the bill perfectly, I also like the fact that at the end of the job I can take a small broom and use it as a dustpan if needed. the handle is very strong, love the rubber end. I would highly recommend this shovel for the homeowner or worker on a job.

Well made, high quality Transfer shovel. Square point is sharp and enables the shovel to cut into the hardest soil. The shovels handle is thicker then most competitors and is topped with a comfortable grip that enables a firm consistent hold on the shovel. The top of the shovel head has extra long tabs that aid in applying foot pressure. A large cross rivet secures the shovel head to the handle making it one of the finest shovels that I've owned.

Very Well Made Shovel That Has A Very Nice Rubber Grip At the End Of The Wooden Handle. The Place Where You Put Your Foot To Dig With This Shovel Is Quite Large And Beneficial To Your Foot. The Shovel Is Great For Digging In Your Yard Or Garden Or For Scooping Up Animal Waste Products.The Wooden Handle Is Very Sturdy, However Leaving It Out In The Harsh Weather Will Cause It To Rot And Separate From The Metal Part Of The Shovel.

This is a good quality shovel. The hanlde has a cushion grip on the top which helps keep your hands from getting blisters working all day. The edge of the shovel has a foot step which greatly aids in control so your foot doesn't slid off when pushing it into the ground. The blade is a durable tempered steel so it should hold up for years to come. Not a flimsy metal that would bend easily.

Received this shovel yesterday, opened the box and immediately put it to work filling up my cart with mulch and spreading it. Loved the size and thickness of the wooden handle that looks good and strong. The shovel part at the end has flat areas that let you have a good place to put your foot and put all the pressure you need. The shovel comes with a lifetime replacement also. I really like the feel and look of this shovel.

As I placed the order I was wondering if the handle was 48" or if the overall length was 48". Thankfully, this shovel is full length and the handle is a very beefy 48". A square point (isn't that an oxymoron?) shovel is great for landscape work. With the slightly turned up edges this is the right tool for tossing mulch or topsoil, digging wet snow out of the gutter, moving sand or gravel, and a thousand other simple jobs where something needs to be moved from here to there. I am a little worried about the quality of the metal used at the business end since it seems quite light (compared with the one my grandfather had), but it has not dinged or bent at all in its first month of use, so it is probably adequate for ten or more years of service.

I am a square foot gardener and this spring, because the rabbits were taking too much of my crops, I decided to change from raised beds to elevated raised bed gardening. In doing so, I had to move a lot of my existing raised bed soil/compost from my old raised beds to my new elevated beds. I started this process with a standard shovel and found that I was not picking up as much as I could. It was so much work, I considered starting with new garden compost but I hated the idea of losing all of the great nutrients and such that I had added into my soil over the last few years. Instead, I switched to the Ames wood handle square point shovel and found that I could move much more compost with each shovelful. It was still a lot of work but it went much quickly and I was able to get the compost in the beds and my seedlings planted. I've been really pleased with the results and will certainly use this shovel as I switch more of my beds to elevated beds in the future. In addition, I'm find that its a good all-around shovel and a high product. I own two other Ames products (a hoe and a rake) that I have used for at least four years and they are still in great shape and work well for my needs.

REAL NICE. THIS 48 INCH. SQUARE HEAD SHOVEL IS MADE IN AMERICA. YES, AMERICA!!! THIS COMPANY "AMES" HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 1774, SO YOU KNOW THAT THEY HAVE MADE QUALITY TOOLS FOR ALONG TIME. IF THEY DIDN'T THEY BE OUT OF BUSSINESS. THE REASON I GOT THIS SHOVEL IS TO REPLACE A SQUARE POINT SHOVEL THAT THE HAND BROKE, IT WAS MADE IN ( YOU GUESS IT ) CHINA.
