Works nice but a couple cautions
I bought this for installation as part of an ongoing bath remodel in an older home The unit is quieter than the other, older Nutone we have in another bath, but not by a real lot. That may have some to do with the fact that I had to engineer my own mounting system instead of using Nutone's. I do like the directed heat feature; very helpful in getting more heat to the floor rather than just near the ceiling as the older or cheaper units do. As with all Nutone units, the light bulb is in a recessed housing, so if, like me, you are replacing a fixture that allowed the light to hang down farther for 360-degree light, you will not get as much room lighting as you had before. I was aware of this when I bought. A couple notes for installers: 1.) I was surprised to find out Nutone does NOT include switches with its fans anymore. For nearly $200, I assumed I would get a switch like I did when I bought an $80 Nutone a few years back. Nope. I live in the country. This made necessary a 50-mile round trip to buy an $18 Broan Nutone P66W switch. Get yours while at the store. They are located next to the fans. Even though the Home Depot rep told me they had none when I called ahead, I found them quickly once in the store. 2.) This unit is not well engineered for new old work. In other words, if you are putting the unit in an older home's existing bath that did not have a light-heat-fan unit before, you may wind up figuring out your own mounting system rather than using the mounting arms included. Rather than use the mounting arms, I wound up mounting it with drywall screws through the housing to two boards that span the gap between ceiling joists in my old house. The mounting rails that are included attach to the sides and allow just 1/2" for drywall. They are designed for new work, and the instructions are all about new work. My ceiling was thicker than 1/2 inch. For old work, a unit suspended by the top or with mounting rails that are higher up on the sides may be desirable. (It would be very easy for Nutone to attach another pair of mounting slides near the top of the enclosure, above the existing ones to make the unit far more adaptable.) 3.) In old work, be aware that the unit requires a dedicated 20 amp circuit so be prepared to run one or have one installed. Make sure you have room to add a circuit breaker or have a spare fuse socket in your main box. Might as well plan it out and get your wire and materials while you are at the store if you plan to DIY it. 4.) It may be useful to run a good quality caulk around any gaps between the housing and the drywall after installation, especially if you have blown-in attic insulation (see photo). It helps with energy efficiency and keeps the insulation from migrating down into your cover.

One improvement please consider allowing the vent to be on either side. We had to go into considerable expense to rework to fit.

UNSAFE!
This is an absolute terribly unsafe piece of garbage. Very disappointing for a Broan product. First off, nowhere in any of the literature including the instructions does it specify this is for New Construction only. There is no junction box inside leaving all of the wires loose inside the box to be dangling around the sharp sheet metal. I guess Broan forgot that fans vibrate. Now I'm swapping for a Panasonic and will lose money off this job. Thanks Broan

Used this to replace a NuTone unit that was 25 years old. Nearly exact fit with no ceiling modifications. The fan is much quieter. Solid product.

THEY Claimed I was the replacement unit of an older unit in my home with wood ceilings. IT WAS NOT! It was much bigger and extremely difficult to install. I took it back and got a different brand and same size unit. This was a major pain in the behind to say the least.

    Loud
The product works but as others have said there are definitely issues. 1- difficult to install, large cutout needed, wires too short 3- ugly - you can see all the mechanisms looking up at it 2- the most disappointing is it is LOUD. 2 sones is NOT correct. It averages about 57 decibels which is about an 8. We would return if it wasn't such a nightmare to get installed.

We also would like to provide some information on our sone ratings:
A sone is a measurement of sound in terms of comfortable hearing level for an average listener. The lower the sone value, the more comfortable the listening environment. Sones are not decibels or volume, but rather how sound is "sensed".
    • 1 Sone is the sound of an average refrigerator.
    • 2 Sones is a sound of a quiet office.
    • 3 Sones is a sound TV makes when set at a comfortable volume.
    • 4 Sones is how loud normal talking is.
    • 5 Sones is basically a louder conversation.
    • 6 Sones is equivalent to a sound in a quiet restaurant.
    • 7 Sones is a sound we hear on a quiet traffic street.
    • 8 Sones is a sound we hear on an average loud traffic street.
    • 9-10 Sones is the loudness of a busy traffic street.
Note: Sones are a better measure than decibels because sones are linear (2 sones is twice as loud as 1 sone as opposed to decibels which are logarithmic - 66 decibels is twice as loud as 60 decibels). Broan

Thank you for your feedback on the 765H110L. We are sorry to hear you are having an issue with the heater. In most cases where the heater is no longer working, it is a result of overheating. Our HFL’s have thermal protection or thermal cut-off’s. In most models this thermal protection is an integrated part of the Heater Element. When the heater overheats for any reason, this thermal protection will shut the heater down. We advise consumers to make sure the Heater is not left on too long, it will eventually get too hot and overheat. These Heaters are not rated for continuous use and if possible, controlling it by a wall timer is always the best practice. For long term care, you willa also want to make sure to clean out the Heater often. We recommend the customer remove the Grille Assembly and vacuum out the inside of the housing with a soft attachment or wipe it out with a dry cloth. This will help prevent getting too much dust to accumulate on the Heater causing overheating issues.

As this is a new unit, we do suggest calling our Product Support Team directly at 800-637-1453 so that you can have a discussion regarding this unit and we can enter a replacement parts order to repair the heat feature. Broan
