As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Do not apply if rain or freezing temperatures are forecasted before full cure can occur. Cold weather and high humidity will slow down cure time." Additionally, DAP Alex Plus is designed, tested, and recommended for general purpose sealing applications, such as trim and molding. The application as described will likely present moisture challenges that would require the use of a more specialized product, such as DAP Premium Polyurethane Construction Adhesive Sealant. As is the case with all acrylic-latex (water-based) formulas, they dry solely by the evaporation of water. Accordingly, environmental conditions and application amounts will dictate dry times. Thick (deep) applications, applications subject to lower temperatures/higher humidity, damp/wet application surfaces and/or application areas with poor air circulation will dry at significantly slower rates. Thin applications, applications subject to higher temperatures/lower humidity, dry/absorbent application surfaces and/or application areas with high air circulation will dry at significantly faster rates. When more challenging applications are present or faster through cure times are required, DAP would recommend that you consider our line of fast cure sealants, such as DAP AMP Window, Door, Trim & Siding High Performance Sealant. DAP AMP Window, Door, Trim & Siding High Performance Sealant will be surface dry and ready for paint in approximately 30 minutes and through cured in 24 hours, even in cooler and/or more humid application conditions. Of note, DAP AMP Window, Door, Trim & Siding High Performance Sealant and similar fast cure sealants require solvent (mineral spirits/paint thinner) for clean-up. DAP Alex Plus is a water based (acrylic latex) formula, the sole drying mechanism is the evaporation of water. Dry time can be significantly impacted by cool or humid application conditions, application to damp surfaces, applications where air contact is limited or by thick (deep) applications of the sealant. Please note that full clarity is only achieved once all of the water contained within the product has evaporated. Of note, DAP For roofing applications, DAP offers a line of specialty use sealants. Based on your commentary, it would appear that the applications that you are using the DAP ALEX PLUS sealant on may require higher performance products such as DAP DYNAFLEX 230, which is an elastomeric joint sealant with 3 times the amount of flexibility offered by DAP ALEX PLUS. It is not designed, tested, labeled, marketed, or recommended for use as a kitchen and bath sealant. For kitchen and bath applications, we would recommend the use of more specialized kitchen and bath products, such as: KWIK SEAL ULTRA, AMP Advanced Modified Polymer Waterproof Kitchen, Bath and Plumbing Sealant or DAP Silicone Max 100% Premium Kitchen and Bath Silicone Sealant. Given the use/application as described, we would recommend removal and replacement with a kitchen and bath rated sealant. Based on your commentary, it would appear that the application that you are using the DAP ALEX PLUS sealant on may require a higher performance product with greater elasticity. Additionally, the Alex Plus is not recommended for sealing kitchen or bathroom applications. A better alternative would be our AMP Kitchen Bath and Plumbing Sealant. Because you did not provide any details regarding your experience, it is difficult to provide you with a proper reply or any product usage guidance. As is the case with all acrylic-latex (water based) sealants, volume loss will occur as the product dries, this is a normal characteristic for this type of formula. Only non-water/solvent-based sealants are capable of "low/no volume loss" performance; however, these types of sealants will require the use of solvent (mineral spirits/paint thinner) for clean-up, likewise, some of these sealants are not paintable. Joints/materials that are prone to experience significant expansion/contraction forces may require higher performance products, such as DAP DYNAFLEX 230 or DAP EXTREME STRETCH. These types of more specialized elastomeric joint sealants offer several times the amount of flexibility offered by DAP ALEX PLUS. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Not for continuous underwater use, filling butt joints, surface defects, tuck-pointing or expansion joints." Product applied in these types of conditions/joint assemblies, will not perform as designed. For joints where more flexibility is required (such as butt joints), more specialized elastomeric sealants such as DAP DYNAFLEX 230 or DAP EXTREME STRETCH would be recommended. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Not for continuous underwater use, filling butt joints, surface defects, tuck-pointing or expansion joints." For this type of application ("butt joints"), we would recommend the use of a more flexible (elastomeric) product, such as DAP DYNAFLEX 230 or DAP DYNAFLEX ULTRA.
