Could not be happier with the results.
This was your average builders grade medium oak cabinet. Terribly ugly and dated in a basement half bath. First time using this product and couldn't be happier with the outcome. I used the Gray Harbor color with the brown glaze. The results were nothing short of amazing for the price. I did a coat a day which took a little more than a week. I will be using the rest of the kit to do the ugly oak kitchenette area for a matching look. It takes time but the results are worth it.

    so easy and beautiful!!!
Weve ised these kits twice now and they are just beautiful! We did harbor gray which has green hues and totally adore it. We did it all ourselves and it only took a few days to do a whole kitchen following all the steps. What a huge and beautiful transformation. Absolutely love it.

      Love my new kitchen
This kit is awesome! If you follow the process and take your time your cabinets will turn out amazing. Took me about two weeks (with a busy schedule) to get my kitchen finished and I absolutely love it!

Was happy until 6 months later
I am not new to diy so I was ready for this project. I researched and read many reviews and decided on Rust-oleum. I put this on oak kitchen cabinets. I cleaned, deglazed and primed as suggested by many. It still took 3 coats of the base. I have a lot of cabinets so this was very time consuming. This took over a month working on weekends only. Once completed and doors put back it looked wonderful. 6 months later the top coat is turning yellowish brown on cabinets that are exposed to sun light and steam from cooking. I am very disappointed that this did not last more than 6 months. Within the next year I will have to redo the cabinets. I will be using a different manufacturer. My happiness did not last long.

Thank you for sharing your experience! If the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Kit was used on bare oak, you are most likely seeing tannin bleed from the wood on the surface. We recommend priming bare wood with an oil-based primer before using our White or Light Kits, as this will prevent bleed through. The surface can be primed as is with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer before it is topcoated with a water-based paint. Make sure the surface is clean and dry prior to priming.

So simple a caveman could do it!
This stuff is amazing! I have a dresser and night stand that I purchased in 1987. It was a bit dated, but otherwise in good shape. I painted the two pieces and put on new hardware. I couldn’t be happier with the result. I completed the whole project in a weekend. I am so happy with my “new” dresser!

This should be called Cabinet transformations for dummies!
This was so easy but I read a lot of reviews and did a lot of scrubbing. I also did need 3 Coats of color on most of the surfaces. And I would definitely recommend 2 Coats of the top Coats.

Product was easy to use but the customer service is what gives them a 5 star review. One of the kits was missing a can of the bond coat so with no hesitation they just sent me an extra full kit!

              Doesn’t last long
I painted my cabinets pure white using 2 of these kits. After using primer, 4 bond coats, and the top coat, we loved the results. However, after about 2 months, the paint started chipping away. Now, 5 months later, they already need to be repainted. I will fix them using my leftover paint I still have so that it matches the rest of the cabinets, but if i had to do this again, I wouldn’t choose this kit. Disappointed!!

We appreciate your reaching out regarding your experience with the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Kit, Sara. If the product is chipping off after 5 months, that would be indicative of a contamination on the surface it's peeling off of. If the deglosser was used, there may have been some left on the surface in these areas that's causing issues. If desired, you can degloss the cabinet door (the entire side), and then clean with a degreaser such as dish soap and water. We'd suggest paying particular attention to the areas that have peeled to ensure best results. If you need additional assistance, you can give us a call, and we'll be happy to help. We can be reached at (800) 901-0411. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1 Rustoleum

The whole process took several days to finish my kitchen cabinets, but it wasn't difficult and turned out well. I opted to go with the Dark Gray. When I applied the base color, it was more of a bluish gray. I was going for a warmer gray, though, so I added the decorative glaze and it came out just how I wanted.

                loved the results,but
It is a very time consuming process. However I loved the end result! Im very handy and used to doing home projects The problem came when two months later I had to use blue painters tape on it, the tape pulled off some of my finish so now I have to redo the entire process on some sections. Considering it was supposed to be cured by then and I know I did the process perfectly I’m disappointed at how easily it got damaged. I’m worried about the longevity of the product

Hi Jenn, we appreciate you sharing your experience and providing this feedback on our Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations. It is odd to hear that painter's tape would damage the finish, and we need to know more to get to the bottom of this. Amazing product!
My bathroom needed updated as well as my kitchen. I wanted to do a trial run in my bathroom first to make sure it would turn out. I was so impressed with how easy this kit was to use. We are ready to move into the kitchen. One side note. When you apply the top coat, make sure not to let it pool in the corners. It will turn white. I watched plenty u tube videos and they all said the same thing.

A lot of work, but worth it.
I hate my kitchen, with its 1980-style laminate cabinets. But a new kitchen isn't in the budget. Both upstairs bathrooms have the same cabinets, so I thought I'd try the master bath with this product and see how hard it was. Truthfully, it's not that difficult to use. What's hard is removing all the cabinet fronts, and then trying to find a place to put everything so you can paint it. I ended up covering the floor in the shower, and balancing the cabinet doors on overturned saucers. The decorative glaze took forever to dry. Everything else went as expected. Keeping the door closed and room clean is essential, as every piece of dust flying through the air will land on the wet surface. Now that everything is put back together, I can see where I messed up (mostly on the edges). Nothing awful, but something to keep in mind if I try the kitchen. I'd have to board the dog for a week if/when the kitchen becomes a reality. There's no way to keep the hair out of the air. I recommend this is as good do-it-yourself project. I'm almost 65 and this was not a strain for me.

                      Turned out great
This is a great kit. It worked wonderful. I took my time and I am very happy with the results. i washed down my whole kitchen with 409 first making sure there are no greasy corners. the I used the cleaner in the kit. I'm not sure if I over-did it but I wanted to make sure the paint stays on. I even sanded a few spots mostly on the corners of drawers and doors that get touched a lot with possible greasy fingers, close to the oven & trash can doors underneath the sink. My kitchen is 25 years old and now it feels brand new to me. I will get my counter top re -done by professionals in February, I don't feel I'm up for that. Overall I highly recommend this kit and personally wished I'd done it sooner. In the images honey-oak is before.

This kit was well made! It worked very well for my kitchen. I ended up needing 2 kits to fully cover the whole thing. I went from brown to white, and it lit up my whole kitchen. LOVE IT!

Did the small cabinet in Espresso in our guest bathroom. I watched the video and used the kit exactly as directed. Cabinet and doors came out beautifully! Installed new chrome handles. I am thrilled with the results! I have enough product left to transform the master bath cabinets. Excited to get that completed. This product is easy to use, inexpensive and well worth the effort to do it yourself.

Don’t recommend using the protective coat if you want a true white color.
Great & easy! All was well until I used to protective top coat and went to bed. Woke up the next morning to check on the cabinets & they had a yellowish hue to them. If you want true/pure white... don’t bother with the clear coat.

Let's talk about this! If using the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Kit over bare wood, we recommend priming with an oil-based primer. We recommend Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer since this will help prevent tannin bleed on the surface and prevent the yellowing from the wood. To ensure full durability, the clear coating in the kit must be used. The surface can be primed and then recoated to prevent further yellowing on the surface.

Worth the work (1 year later)
Be prepared for a lot of work! I re-finished two bathroom vanity cabinets, two medicine cabinets, and my entire kitchen. It took me a month, working on it every day. That being said, it was worth the work. I am extremely happy with the results. I took my time, followed the directions as indicated in the kit, and gave each coat plenty of time to dry. (I did purchase and apply the optional recommended primer, since I was painting over oak.) I did find that the gray included as one of the possible colors was too dark for what I wanted. Since I purchased the kit in store, they did have to tint the paint coat. I was able to work with the paint department to turn down the percentage of color in the gray, and ended up with a much softer gray than is on the box. I'm very happy with the color! I used this system to re-finish almost a year and a half ago. I am still very happy with it! My cabinets and drawers are showing no scratches or damage over a year later. Don't rush the process, follow the directions, and work with your paint department.

The best brand for painting cabinets
I love the new colors of my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I did it by myself with this great product, thanks God I didn’t have to pay somebody else to do it because it’s too expensive. I bought one kit “35 sq. ft.” to paint two bathrooms and one kit “100 sq. ft.” to paint the kitchen, but of the two I had paint left.

                                Only ok for small projets
I have very mixed feelings about this kit. I am really glad that I didn't start off by using this on my kitchen cabinets and instead I tested this out on an already old bathroom vanity. This may be great for beginners but it's not going to give you the best results. Pros: - easy to use - this kit technically contains everything you should need, except for gloves, brushes, and paint. Cons: - this kit skips important steps - includes items you won't use - top coat is awful I used this on an old vanity and it was very very easy to just follow the steps. I had no issues with the deglosser and bond coat (except for having to use 3 coats, but I was covering up a very dark vanity). Then I used the top coat and this almost ruined my project. I am really glad I only used the top coat on the backs of the doors and not yet on the frame of the vanity. I painted the top coat on in the evening, and in the morning it was a really scary sight. It made my previously painted bond coat come out yellow and i had bubbles everywhere. Thankfully I was able to consult a friend who's painted a whole kitchen and he recommended using the Behr Cabinet paint. I used that to finish up my vanity and it came out looking great. I don't know if the top coat in my kit was defective but I have read other people also mention how it makes their cabinets yellow and is not that great. My bathroom vanity looks fine now since I saved it with the Behr cabinet paint and this was a good experience for me as I learned that this is not the right thing for my kitchen cabinets. Having now properly painted my kitchen cabinets (not using this product), I know that it's important not to skip many steps that this kit would skip, like proper sanding and priming. For my kitchen cabinets, I ended up doing the following steps: deglossing with DSP, sanding with 240 grit sandpaper, priming 2x with Kilz and painting 2x with Behr cabinet paint. Do not use this product, it will not be good enough for kitchen cabinets.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Kit. The Protective Topcoat is an essential step to protect the bond coat, and is a satin water-based polyurethane. Yellowing may occur if the polyurethane is applied too heavily, and bubbles may form if the top coat is shaken prior to applying, or overworked with the brush when it is applied. For the best results, we recommend applying a thin, even coat, laying the polyurethane down carefully in the direction of the grain, and avoiding overworking the finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Used on white laminate vanity (espresso kit)
Truly the best money we've spent. We used the espresso kit on an old white laminate bathroom vanity (the vanity is almost 25 years old). Turned out beautifully. My husband and I are novices, and the picture is the final result. (I apologize for not having a "before" pic of the white vanity). We chose NOT to use the decorative glaze. After trying it out on one of the doors, we felt the glaze was better suited for bringing out the richness of real wood, not laminate. Otherwise, we deglossed, used 2-3 coats of the bond coat, and finished with the protective top coat. As some have noted, the first coat of bond coat tends to appear light/uneven. Don't let that worry you. It covers very well with a second coat. As an aside, we just trimmed the stock mirror rather than replacing it, and then we installed square vinyl tiles on the floor and grouted them. Yes, that's vinyl - not even our appraiser could tell! Everyone we know is amazed with what we did to our master bath. You can truly do some incredible things on a budget these days.

This product helped me transform my whole kitchen. I had the base tinted Sand Grey. I love the final result. Tip; make sure you don’t have runs or drips because they will dry that way. And don’t put tooo much protective coat or it will dry a little yellow. One door I ended up doing a 3rd coat. One kit was enough for my whole kitchen and 2 bathroom cabinets. Highly recommend!

Looking for a solid WEEKEND remodeling project for your kitchen? Well this ain't it buddy. Don't get me wrong. The finished product CAN be amazing. They try and sell you on the fact that you don't need to sand your cabinets. However, the "deglossing" is just as time consuming and just as labor intensive. But if you take your time and follow the directions your cabinets will turn out GORGEOUS. You cannot be in a hurry though. I can't emphasize that point enough. Just be careful of the color you choose. I chose the cocoa. Turned out gorgeous, but it really darkened by kitchen. If you already have a hand sander, it may be cheaper to just sand and buy cabinet paint. I chose not to deglaze. I also used a water based semi-gloss polyurethane/acrylic combo. Step 4 did not offer enough shine for my taste. Overall, the cabinets turned out beautiful. This project took about a week. I worked about 6 hours on each of the first 2 days. Then for the next 5 days I worked a couple of hours each day.

I bought this to refinish my bathroom cabinets. While the finished product came out beautiful, the reason I only gave 4 stars is because I did not use the glaze or the top coat. After reading many reviews on the top coat, I decided not to even bother attempting it and used Minwax polycryllic satin finish instead. I did not want to use the glaze since I wanted the light gray color. Had I been using one of the darker colors, I might have tried the glaze. Since I didn't use 2 out of the 4 steps included with the kit, I probably would have been better off buying all the supplies individually. If you're interested in using the glaze, then I'd say buy the kit. Take your time and follow the instructions and you'll be pleased with the results.
