Does what it says on the can, not what it shows
As soon as I opened the can, I knew the color on it wasn't going to be accurate. "Weathered oak" read pure gray, with not a hint of the reds or browns, and that's what ended up on the wood when I tested it on a piece of oak (after lightly sanding with 120 and 220 grit). Looks the same way on my stir stick. It actually does look "weathered", in the sense that my oak board now looks moldy, but that's not what I'm going for.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Varathane Classic Wood Stain, Mike. Keep in mind that there are several factors that can impact the color of wood stain, such as the species of wood, and how long the stain is allowed to penetrate the wood prior to wiping the excess stain. The longer the stain is allowed to remain on the wood prior to wiping, the darker the color will become. We recommend testing the stain on a scrap piece of wood, or a test spot prior to applying to ensure the desired color is achieved.

Not even close to the finish they advertise
As others have stated the finish on sanded pine is not even close to the color they claim on the can, web and in-store display. Attached is the sanded scrap pine I tested this junk out on and as you can see both the Weathered Oak and Hazelwood stains come out grey, not brown. If they were true to color then it would have matched our flooring (also shown)... and per-conditioning only helps with eliminating blotching on soft woods, not bad color.

We need to gather more details to get to the bottom of this, Dave! Please give us a call at 800-901-0411 to talk with us further. When calling, please have your can of Rust-Oleum Classic Wood Stain nearby, so we can collect the batch information from it. Please keep in mind, the wood type and its condition will affect the final color of the stain. This is why we recommend applying in a test area first or on a scrap piece from the project

      Highly recommend!!
Excellent product! Easy to use. We stained 1600 sq ft of white pine boards with a little over 1 gallon of stain. I read online I would need 7 gallons so I bought 8. Ended up returning 6 because I didn’t need them.

      Good quality and even coverage
Consistent color and coverage. Ive been skeptical about moving away from Minwax products, but this seemed to work fine. I used it on a pine door i.built.

      Weathered Oak is definitely gray
Weathered oak looks nothing like what’s on the can. We stirred and applied evenly and it’s gray and streaky.

We appreciate you reaching out and sharing your experience! Since the wood species used for the application will affect the final color, it is essential that Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain is applied in a test area first. The wood also needs to be sanded to open up the pores, and all excess stain needs to be wiped away. Please keep in mind, if staining a softer wood, a wood conditioner may be needed for the best finish.

"Classic Gray" is truly gray. Picture on can is not gray.
The product is good, and dries pretty fast. Classic Gray is truly a gray stain. The reason for only 4 stars is the picture on the can is not even close to the gray of the finished product on pine.

        Perfect!
Bought this stain in Early American to stain tongue & groove ceiling. Wanted a color that was lighter than our floors but would still match. Love how they are turning out! Online I read that I would need 7 gallons to do 1600 sq ft, I have stained about 900 sq ft so far & haven’t even used a whole gallon yet!

I have wooden doors that were sanded down and used this product on. Golden Oak??? It is more like dark brown. I am so disappointed. Thought it might dry lighter....nope. Now if I want doors lighter, I will have to sand down (or hire someone again) and do again. So much work & such expense.

So easy an old man and granddaughter can do it. LOL!
I found this product so easy to use on my laundry room cabinet that I got my thirteen year old granddaughter to help me and it can out great.

          Perfect clear colorless stain
Excellent coverage and true clear colorless tones. I used as a pre stain before applying dark walnut on pine slabs to help lighten contrasts across softwood grain. It wipes or brushes on and has a barely wet sheen. Have to pay attention to avoid missing spots. Dries quickly and ready for overstaining in 2 hours.

          Great product!
If you're looking for a sleek look, this is the color for you. It only takes 1 coat & you only need to shake or stir before using.

          Don’t buy hazelwood,
Looks nothing like the photo on the can. I’ve used other shades that applied perfectly, but this applied so poorly. I sanded my wood piece extremely well beforehand, but it looks as if I didn’t at all. The color like murky light gray water. I also stirred my can in a circular motion as directed for a very long time; so it’s not like directions weren’t followed. This ruined my piece of plywood, and wasted my time and money too.

Something is amiss here, Natalie. Keep in mind that the final finish of the Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain can differ depending on the wood species. For that reason, we always recommend applying the stain to a small test area first to ensure it's the color you're looking for. We need to know more about your experience to get to the bottom of this. Please call us at 800-901-0411 to discuss further. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

This stain is great - loved the color! Trick is to wipe off before it dries - I left it on only 3 minutes and the color was awesome. Showed so Much wood grain detail - if you leave on too long it gets to dark and just looks solid.

            Weathered oak = gray
Wish I would’ve read the reviews before I used the weathered oak on my brand new unfinished desk. The first coat looks really nice; second coat, the stain turned the wood almost completely gray. Not at all what I was expecting based on the photo on the can and the images associated with this color. I tried oil based polyurethane to hopefully brown up the color a bit, but no dice. Smaller piece in photo is one coat plus poly; larger piece is two coats plus poly. Super disappointed.

Nice stain in a small can.
Good size can for a small job. Went on well with good coverage over a difficult surface. Only problem was it drying time. Remained sticky overnight. Color on can was more of a tan than grey but inside can color was nice.

              Wrong color & awful
We bought the weathered oak hoping for a nice natural wood color & instead it’s dark gray. We applied it to a bed frame hoping it would lighten, we followed the directions, & it only got darker. We can’t sand it off either. It’s ugly, it’s the wrong color, I hate it, my husband hates it. I don’t know if it was a bad batch of stain but our bed is now ruined & we hate it. Definitely don’t recommend.

This is a really nice color, a mix of light brown and red. I make cornhole sets and this has been my favorite stain so far, I just switched to it.
